‘When I arrive in Delhi, I start thinking when I will leave': Pollution levels in Delhi reducing life expectancy of people, says Gadkari

Indian Express08-07-2025
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday that pollution levels in Delhi are reducing the life expectancy of the people of the Capital.
'Main Delhi mein do ya teen din rehta hun… jab aata hun toh sochta hun kab waha se jana hai… Mein pehle ticket jane ka nikalta hun… Aap iss ko gambheerta se lo ki Delhi mein jo pradushan hai uss ke karan aam aadmi ka jeewan kam hota ja raha hai… (I stay in Delhi for two or three days only, and when I arrive, I start thinking about when I will leave. I book my return tickets first. You should take this issue seriously. The pollution in Delhi has led to a decrease in the life expectancy of common people),' he said while taking part in a plantation drive, 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0', at Faridabad-Noida International Airport Road in Gautam Buddha Nagar.
Highlighting the alarming levels of pollution in Delhi, Gadkari said: 'The oxygen level here is very high today, and once the airport (Noida International Airport) is built and more vehicles enter this area, the environment could further deteriorate.'
'Safeguarding (the environment) is our responsibility. We are making aviation fuel and I have taken a vow that when the first flight takes off from here, I will be supplying aviation fuel,' he added.
'When I first became minister, India was ranked 13th or 14th globally in the automobile sector. Today, we have overtaken Japan and hold the third position in the world and the automobile sector contributes Rs 22 lakh crore to the economy,' Gadkari said. He added that while this growth has provided employment to over 4.5 crore youths and generated substantial GST revenue, it also poses a serious environmental challenge.
Acknowledging that at 40 per cent, the transport sector is the largest contributor to pollution in the country, he said: 'We are number one in pollution too. Hence, our department is committed to mitigating it through plantation and transplantation efforts.'
The 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative — a National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) campaign — aims to promote environmental consciousness by encouraging tree plantations in honour of one's mother. 'Just as we respect our mothers, we must show the same reverence to Mother Earth. This programme has both cultural and moral significance,' Gadkari said.
Speaking about NHAI's efforts to expand green cover, he said: 'NHAI has taken several initiatives for green highways. We have also built a 20-km stretch of crash barrier using bamboo. Now, we do not need permission to fell bamboo… and by planting bamboo, NHAI will earn several crores.'
He further said that about 80 lakh tonnes of waste from four Delhi landfills are used for highway construction. 'We have reduced the height of the Ghazipur landfill by 7 m,' he claimed.
Gadkari mentioned how Artificial Intelligence was leveraged for the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. He noted that all plants under the campaign will be e-tagged to ensure the long-term care of the trees. 'This will help us to ensure the proper development of a sapling. The world is changing rapidly. If we do not act now, we risk losing the natural life that exists in places like this (Noida). It is our job to protect it,' he added.

‘Adani group to invest Rs 96,000 crore in airports business over 5 years'

AHMEDABAD: Operating seven airports in India, including Mumbai CSMIA with Navi Mumbai set to join the list this Oct, the Adani group will invest close to Rs 1 lakh crore in its airport business over the next five years. This capex will be spread over both infra and real estate development. The conglomerate's airport head Jeet Adani (27), son of patriarch Gautam Adani , says the potential in India is so immense that it has no immediate plans to expand this vertical of business abroad. Excerpts: What are your investment plans for the sector? We do five-year rolling planning. In the next five years, our total investment planned in the airports ecosystem between infrastructure and real estate is almost Rs 95,000-96,000 crore. The biggest chunk of the capex will be at Navi Mumbai Airport, Mumbai Airport and real estate in these two places. The other big projects are to build new terminals at airports in places like Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram in next four years. The recently-built terminal in Lucknow will be expanded. A new terminal at Guwahati is ready and will be commissioned this Oct-Nov. Do you have any plans to build and operate airports abroad too? Not immediately. We see too much opportunity in India and don't want to distract ourselves by going abroad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo We keep getting feelers from abroad. But at the end of the day, it's about our management bandwidth and where do we want to keep our capital. We believe India will see some serious growth in the next 10-15 years. There's so much growth opportunity here with 26 airports already identified for being developed PPP way. Our focus is on going deeper in India and establishing a broader presence here, rather than going abroad. Jeet Adani What is the investment that the upcoming Navi Mumbai will see? We clubbed phase I and II of that airport and will open with an initial capacity of 2 crore passengers annually (CPA) instead of building 1 CPA at a time. This has been built with a capex of Rs 19,000 crore. We have already started work on T2 for Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) which could either be 3-CPA capacity at Rs 30,000 crore or 5-CPA capacity with a capex of Rs 40-45,000 crore. That decision will be taken shortly and T2 construction work will start in 6-12 months. Our overall capex on NMIA that will take it to the ultimate capacity of 9 CPA will be Rs 1 lakh crore. A completely new T1 at Mumbai CSMIA will be built by 2032 at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore. How do you plan to fund this capex? Equity we will put on our own. We have to refinance NMIA. The same lenders have already expressed willingness to participate in the next round. Our philosophy is to pre-invest in infra because we are willing to take a position on the growth of the aviation sector and growth of the economy of the cities we are in. The sector has some real tailwinds. What makes you so bullish on aviation, given the not so happy relation between airlines and airports here in the past? We are not here just as an airport operator but are here to drive the entire ecosystem forward. It is not a fight between airline and airport operators. Collectively, our aviation ecosystem has to get the traffic currently transiting between India and rest of the world through nearby hubs in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and even Europe (for North America market). Those places have a deep integration between airports and airlines, which as of now is not there in India. Fortunately as a group, we have fantastic relationship with IndiGo and the Tatas. We have spoken to both and have asked them to include us into their planning and be a part of our planning. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Liquor ‘scam': YSRCP MP played key role in policy changes

SIT arrests YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy VIJAYAWADA: YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy, arrested by an Andhra Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the alleged liquor scam case, has been remanded in judicial custody till Aug 1. Following his arrest Saturday night, he was taken for medical exam to Vijayawada Govt Hospital on Sunday and later produced before ACB Special Court. According to the remand report, Midhun Reddy has been named as accused No 4 in the case related to alleged irregularities in the state's liquor policy between 2019 and 2024, resulting in a 'misappropriation' of about Rs 3,500 crore. The report alleges Midhun Reddy played a role in orchestrating policy changes and coordinating with co-accused to secure kickbacks from distilleries and suppliers. The SIT alleged Midhun Reddy influenced Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Ltd officials. According to SIT, kickbacks collected from liquor suppliers were routed through a hierarchical chain. The funds were first collected and handed over allegedly to Kesireddy Rajasekhar Reddy, who then 'transferred' them to ex-MP Vijay Sai Reddy, Midhun Reddy, & businessman Govindappa Balaji. These individuals 'transferred' money allegedly to ex-CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy . To execute scheme, officers 'amenable' to the accused's designs were 'strategically appointed to key positions' within govt.
