Mumbai: Jane Street has complied with an interim regulatory order and deposited ₹4,844 crore in an escrow account , after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) probe into the New York trading firm revealed alleged instances of manipulation in the local derivatives market The decision came as a surprise to market participants, as it is rare for firms accused of violations to deposit such a large sum to comply with an ex-parte, interim order. "Jane Street's action in depositing this amount could be with the intention to establish its bona fides," said a senior Supreme Court lawyer, who declined to be named.Sebi is examining the firm's request to lift the trading ban on it. The regulator will issue directions to intermediaries, including stock exchanges and depositories, to lift restrictions of the interim order, said people aware of developments, adding that Jane Street deposited the money on Friday. This was verified by the regulator on Monday.Three days after the curbs were imposed, Jane Street had told its staff that Sebi's order reflects a "misunderstanding of standard hedging practices and the interrelationships between derivative and underlying markets."It had then said Sebi's claim that the firm's activity is "prima facie manipulative" disregarded the role of liquidity providers and arbitrageurs in markets.Sebi had barred Jane Street from trading in Indian markets after its order alleged index manipulation, involving bank shares and Bank Nifty index futures and options. The high-frequency trader was told it would be allowed to restart trading if it deposited Rs 4,844 crore, which the regulator had estimated to be "unlawful gains" from the allegedly manipulated trades.Lawyers said that even though Jane Street complied with Sebi's interim order, the firm would still provide a formal reply to the regulator, rebutting the allegations. Jane Street also has the option to challenge Sebi's findings at the Securities and Appellate Tribunal (SAT).Sebi confirmed that despite Jane Street's action, the firm reserves its legal and equitable rights and remedies."Based on a reading of the Sebi order, the trading ban would be lifted on the deposit of the amount mentioned. However, trades would be subjected to accentuated scrutiny by the exchanges and also subject to the no-fraud rule," said Sandeep Parekh, managing partner at law firm Finsec Law Advisors. "On an operational basis, Sebi may have to instruct the exchanges and depositories to lift the previous ban, but that would simply be the plumbing of the order."The derivatives market has been impacted by Jane Street's absence. After the July 3 Sebi order, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) saw a significant drop in daily average turnover for index options trading, of about 17%, in the previous week.Sebi's investigation showed that the trading firm was engaged in manipulative trades on the expiry days of Bank Nifty derivatives that pushed the outcome in their favour.According to the probe, the manipulation by Jane Street occurred on expiry days of index options. Sebi has accused Jane Street of manipulating shares and futures prices to make outsized profits through options on these days.Sebi invoked the prohibition of unfair trade practices regulation for market manipulation, which covers any act or practice. It focused on Jane Street's trading data of about 20 days showing highest profits. Some legal experts said Sebi didn't analyse Jane Street's full data, involving millions of trades. "It picked the winning days out of many days of winning and losing trades," said a lawyer. The regulator will issue a final order after concluding its investigation and hearing Jane Street. The company has made over Rs 43,289 crore profit in index options and Rs 7,687 crore in losses across stock futures, index futures and cash markets on the NSE between January 2023 and March 2025, according to Sebi.

Indian exporters optimistic as Bangladesh plans to import 9 lakh tonne rice

Indian rice millers and exporters are upbeat about Bangladesh's "plan to import 9 lakh tonnes of rice", anticipating a boost in demand and better prices for the cereal, stakeholders said on Sunday. With India accounting for 46 per cent of global rice exports, the country is expected to "emerge as the primary beneficiary of the move for its proximity, availability, and competitive pricing", they said. "Of the total import plan, 4 lakh tonnes will be procured directly by the Bangladesh government through international tenders, while another 5 lakh tonnes will be imported by private traders of the neighbouring country. The decision comes earlier than usual, amid fear of crop loss due to heavy rain that could impact Bangladesh's Amon paddy currently being sown," Ricevilla Foods CEO Suraj Agarwal told PTI. Jai Baba Bakreswar Rice Mill Director Rahul Agarwal said the rice industry in the country, especially in Bengal, is well-positioned to benefit from the proposed plan by the Bangladesh authorities, and he did not foresee any diplomatic hurdle amid India's curbs on the import of garments and jute through the Petrapole border. "At least 30-40 per cent of the private imports will likely be sourced from Bengal mills and traders. Bengal mills will also participate in the government tenders for 4 lakh tonnes. States like Bengal, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Bihar will benefit the most," he said. Popular Indian rice varieties such as 'Swarna', 'Ratna', 'Miniket', and 'Sona Masoori' are expected to see price gains in both West Bengal and southern India amid the anticipated demand surge, he said. Prices of 'Swarna Mansoori' parboiled rice, now at Rs 29 per kg (ex-mill), may rise to Rs 31-32, while 'Miniket' variety currently being sold at Rs 41-42, could touch Rs 45 per kg in the coming weeks, Suraj Agarwal said. Bangladesh's early import plan reflects "precautionary steps ahead of possible floods during the Amon season", the stakeholders said. The Bangladesh government has already procured 3.76 lakh tonnes of Boro paddy and 9.50 lakh tonnes of rice against a target of 14 lakh tonnes, with procurement set to conclude by mid-August, according to reports. From August, Bangladesh proposed to expand its food-friendly programme to 55 lakh families, providing 30 kg of rice per month at Tk 15 per kg during August, September, October, November, February, and March, the reports suggested. Exporters believe the development will further strengthen "India's position as Bangladesh's key rice supplier while firming up prices for low-to-medium rice varieties in the domestic market". Visakhapatnam and Paradip ports are major ones for rice exports. Sonal Comstar to form JV with Jinnaite Machinery to enter China EV market

Gurugram-based Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd. (Sona Comstar) has formed an electric vehicle (EV) market-focused joint venture (JV) with China's foundry operator Jinnaite Machinery (JNT). In the initial phase, Sona Comstar will invest $12 million, while JNT will provide $8 million worth of assets and business to the JV, the Indian company announced in an exchange filing. With this JV, Sona Comstar aims to expand its presence in Asia. "The driveline manufacturing operations in China align with the company's strategy to expand its presence in Asian markets, particularly in India, China, Japan, and South Korea," the company said. The JV is expected to begin operations in the second half of the current financial year. The JV will produce and supply driveline systems and components to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in China and globally. Vivek Vikram Singh, MD and Group CEO, Sona Comstar, said, 'As the largest electric vehicle market in the world and a leader in EV technologies, China offers tremendous opportunities for innovation and growth. By leveraging the strengths of both partners, this venture is well-positioned for strong growth. With a robust order book already in place, we expect operations to commence later this year.' "The expansion of charging networks and investments in green energy are making EVs more accessible, which aids in reducing carbon emissions and transforming urban mobility," the company stated. Gucheng County Economic Development Zone-based JNT operates a large-scale foundry to produce castings and mouldings. The company holds 63 patents and 36 proprietary technologies and serves as a major supplier to automotive, off-highway, and railway OEMs in China, as well as in North America, Europe, and Japan. In 2024, annual EV sales in China reached 11 million, accounting for two-thirds of global EV sales, according to the IEA Global EV Outlook 2025 report. Chinese OEMs accounted for 76 per cent of global EV sales in 2024, according to a report by RHO Motion. Earlier this month, Uno Minda Limited and Suzhou Inovance Automotive formed a joint venture in India, with Uno Minda holding a 70 per cent stake and Suzhou 30 per cent. The JV will locally manufacture high-voltage EV components such as CCUs, E-axles, inverters, and motors for passenger and commercial vehicles, reducing import dependence. Operationally, Uno Minda will contribute its distribution network, while Suzhou will contribute its powertrain expertise.
