
Jewellery sector eyes Middle East as US tariff threat grows

In one such initiative, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the apex body of the gem and jewellery trade in India, with the support of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt of India, the Embassy of India in Riyadh, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah, and the Dubai Jewellery Group, successfully launched the Saudi Arabia Jewellery Exposition (SAJEX) through two curtain-raiser events in Jeddah and Riyadh recently.
The twin events witnessed an overwhelming response from over 280 key Saudi stakeholders, including top retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers.
Later this year, a three-day event, SAJEX 2025, will take place from Sept 11 at the iconic Jeddah Superdome.
"As part of its ongoing efforts to diversify export markets and explore untapped opportunities, GJEPC is unlocking the growing potential of Saudi Arabia, the Gulf's largest economy, with a GDP of $1.1 trillion.
With its jewellery market projected to nearly double from $4.56 billion in 2024 to $8.34 billion by 2030," said GJEPC in a statement.
Saudi Arabia is fast emerging as a key destination for contemporary and luxury jewellery. A young, urban population and a dynamic retail environment are driving demand for 18 karat and 21 karat plain gold, diamond-studded jewellery, and premium design-led products. Against this backdrop, SAJEX becomes an important strategic step to strengthen India-Saudi Arabia ties and expand India's jewellery footprint in the Middle East and beyond.

SAJEX, positioned as "The World Gem and Jewellery Fair," marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between India and Saudi Arabia in the jewellery sector. India, as the global hub for jewellery manufacturing, will showcase its exceptional craftsmanship, cutting-edge design, and manufacturing expertise at this platform, which will feature over 200 leading exhibitors across more than 250 booths from India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, Hong Kong, and Lebanon.
The event will witness over 2,000 international buyers, and the product showcase will span diamond and coloured gemstone-studded jewellery, plain gold jewellery, along with cutting-edge jewellery technology.
"What makes SAJEX truly unique is its long-term vision to foster enduring partnerships between international manufacturers and Saudi retailers through a focused B2B platform tailored to the Kingdom's evolving market.
At the heart of this effort is the World Jewellery Investment Forum, co-hosted by GJEPC and the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia," GJEPC said. This high-level forum will bring together govt leaders, global brands, investors, and industry experts to explore strategic opportunities across the jewellery value chain, positioning Saudi Arabia as a future hub for jewellery design, innovation, and investment.

India-EU FTA talks: Why resolving differences in services is a significant step forward
In the 12th round of negotiations that concluded earlier this month, India and the European Union managed to close the digital trade chapter 'in principle' and made substantial progress on the text dealing with 'services and investment', marking a significant step forward in concluding the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that both sides aim to sign by the end of this year. The digital trade chapter of the FTA discussions covers crucial segments such as cross-border data flows, where trade partners decide on commitments to regulate movement of data across borders, which is important for e-commerce and global services. To be sure, the textual positions taken by both sides have not yet been made public. However, bridging the regulatory gap in services between India and the EU would open the door for the Indian services sector to integrate more deeply, scale up, and attract greater investment. This is important since the EU is the largest investor globally, and services represent over 70 per cent of the EU's foreign direct investment (FDI) abroad. According to a 2021 European Parliament report, the EU aimed to remove all 'discriminatory and disproportionate obstacles to establishment in both the services sector, as well as to the supply of cross-border services, in order to ensure a level playing field between EU and Indian service providers'. India has a fast growing IT and financial service sectors that has acted as a cushion for the economy as goods trade remained modest compared to the size of the economy. Regulations on cross-border data flows are among the most contentious topics in trade agreements with the Western countries, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Effective AI systems — seen as the cornerstone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution — require diverse datasets from multiple countries. This has sparked a fierce race for data among Silicon Valley firms. India has traditionally resisted altering its stance on data localisation under any plurilateral agreements at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to preserve policy space. It has also tightened norms, notably in April 2018, when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) made it mandatory for payment system providers such as Mastercard and Visa to store payment data of Indian residents within the country. A 2018 UNCTAD report, Power, Platforms, and the Free Trade Delusion, highlighted the importance of data for innovation. It noted that control over data creates 'market power and barriers to entry for new players'. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) also highlighted the potential benefits of data localisation, including encouragement to foreign investment in domestic digital infrastructure, enabling enforcement of national laws, as well as safeguarding privacy and cyber sovereignty. Countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines have implemented such measures to promote local capabilities and protect infant industries. The EU status report on the trade talks also stated that negotiators made substantial progress on the investment text. The negotiators had made very good progress on rules for state-to-state mediation, it added. Movement on dispute settlement is significant since it suggests a breakthrough on long-standing EU concerns regarding investment protection in India. A European Parliament report had previously expressed regret that 'uncertainties remain for EU investors, notably as a result of India's decision to unilaterally terminate all its bilateral investment treaties (BITs) in 2016'. However, India has since begun to address the issue by negotiating new investment treaties under a revised framework. While India has shown flexibility in its position, favouring resolution of investor-state disputes under domestic laws, the EU has stated that an investment protection agreement could serve as an 'adequate stepping stone for further strengthening bilateral trade relations,' as it encourages negotiators to work towards establishing a multilateral investment court. ‘Commercial flights no longer need to close window shade at defence airports during landing & take off:' DGCA
NEW DELHI: Commercial airlines and charter & private jet operators will no longer need to close window shades during landing and take off at defence airports. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Saturday said on X: 'After receipt of revised instructions, lowering of window shades is no longer required, while the prohibition on aerial/ground photography remains in effect for all operations at Indian Air Force joint use airports (JUAs). ' 'Advisory to air operators on prohibition of aerial/ground photography and lowering of window shades were issued as per instructions from IAF to enhance operational safety at JUAs,' the regulator said Saturday in response to an issue raised about this on X. A round May 20, the DGCA had directed commercial flights to ensure window shades of aircraft — except on emergency exit rows — remain closed during take off and landing at defence airports, 'particularly those near the western Indian border.' The order had been issued for 'strict compliance to enhance operational safety and prevent unintentional sharing of security-related information by general public/crew. ' The order was issued amid the currently paused Operation Sindoor that India launched after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025. Following that, 32 airports in north, central and western India — including many sensitive defence airbases with civil enclaves at places like Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Gwalior and Hindon — were closed for a few days. In normal circumstances, all window shades have to remain open during take off and landing for safety reasons. This allows passengers and crew to quickly assess external conditions, such as fires or debris, and to better see exits in case of an emergency evacuation.
