Applications for TVET programmes surge to 229,000, says Zahid
He said the sharp rise reflected growing awareness among parents, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers, and those unable to pursue higher education about the advantages of TVET, particularly its potential for high-paying careers.
"They found that TVET graduates can earn premium salaries, which are not bound by the government's minimum wage of RM1,700. Instead, earnings are based on the skills acquired. In fact, some courses, such as welding, offer a starting salary of RM7,500," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Kangar Umno Division Delegates Meeting here on Saturday (July 26), which was also attended by Perlis Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Rozabil Abd Rahman.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also National TVET Council chairman, said there are currently 1,398 TVET institutions nationwide, with strong demand for skilled labour, particularly from foreign direct investment companies operating in Malaysia.
"We will continue to expand the number of places and courses offered to match the country's workforce needs. For example, many private TVET institutions already offer programmes in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and robotics.
"We are confident the involvement of TVET students in these emerging fields is in line with the demand for skilled workers from international companies," he said. – Bernama

Collaborative PBK-LKW approach vital for rural development
KUALA LUMPUR: A unified strategy between corridor authorities (PBK) and regional development agencies (LKW) is crucial for advancing rural development, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. As Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), Ahmad Zahid emphasised that structured planning aligned with local needs will drive sustainable progress. 'The synergy between PBK as strategic planners and LKW as implementers can foster high-impact partnerships,' he stated on his official Facebook page. Under the KKDW Strategic Plan 2026-2030, the government prioritises transforming rural economies via inclusive Rural Investment Hubs. These hubs aim to modernise rural identities by linking local potential with global markets. Key collaborations include Kedah's Integrated Economic and Community Centre (iCON) by KEDA, NCIA-PERDA's income initiative (IPR INTAN), and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) along the East Coast supported by ECRL. Johor's KEJORA also backs the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Ahmad Zahid affirmed that today's PBK-LKW meeting underscores Malaysia's commitment to coordinated rural growth. 'Insya-Allah, this synergy will shape a resilient future for rural communities,' he added. - Bernama

Petronas empowers Sabah's top students with scholarships
Chelinda KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): Time management is the most crucial element for outstanding student Chelinda Majon from Sekolah Menengah Sains Sabah. The 18-year-old said a positive environment and good manners also contributed to her results of 8A+ and 1A in last year's SPM (Malaysian Certificate of Education), enabling her to secure an education scholarship from national petroleum company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas). 'My first tip is to manage time well; second, surround yourself with positive people — friends who can motivate you to study; and lastly, maintain good manners and attitude towards parents, teachers and religion. I feel proud to have this opportunity,' she expressed gratefully. Chelinda, originally from Kiulu, is the daughter of a primary school teacher and the eldest of three siblings. She has been offered a Preparatory Course at INTEC Education College in Shah Alam before furthering her studies at a selected university in South Korea. Wan Khaira Chelinda's schoolmate, Wan Khaira Wardiya Wan Ardey, 18, from Kampung Kuala Abai, Kota Belud, secured a Petronas education scholarship for a Petroleum Engineering course in Australia. 'I was offered a scholarship for Petroleum Engineering — one year in Malaysia followed by four years in Australia. My advice to less fortunate friends is: study diligently, and God willing, doors will open. High determination will surely yield results,' she said confidently. In contrast, Kudat native Edmond Linggahan Formon, 17, took the pressure of being the eldest child — often seen as an inspiration and benchmark by his three younger siblings — as a positive challenge. He, who dreamt of studying abroad, never imagined it would come true upon receiving a Petronas scholarship for a Chemical Engineering course in Australia. 'We knew about scholarships in secondary school, so I wanted a prestigious one like Petronas — it's like a dream come true. Thank you, Petronas, for making my dream a reality and giving me global exposure,' explained Edmond from SM Sains Tuaran who achieved 6A+ 3A in Pure Science. Edmond For disabled father Azali Mahmud, 54, from Ranau, tears of gratitude flowed as he watched his youngest daughter, Auni Athirah Azali, 18, stand on stage as Petronas scholarship recipient. His disability, confining him to a wheelchair for the past five years, has not stopped him from fulfilling his duty to educate his four children. He is Auni's motivator, encouraging her to pursue academic excellence as she begins an Economics course at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). 'Auni is my second child sponsored by Petronas; her elder brother is now an engineer at Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). My condition inspires them. Even in hardship, if we have true spirit and strong dreams to advance ourselves, we can overcome anything. Nothing is impossible in achieving success,' he advised, embodying the Malay proverb: 'where there's a will, there's a way'.
