‘I swam towards it': Friend's emotional search for missing influencer

MUAR - A desperate friend swam through murky waters to inspect a sunken car, only to confirm it belonged to missing influencer Ija Nizaruddin, intensifying efforts to locate him in Sungai Tui, Muar.
Muhammad Syahmi Mansur, 30, who has been close to Ija for years, recounted the moment he and several friends sprang into action after learning about Ija's disappearance on Monday night.
"We were told his car had gone missing, so that same night, nine friends and I searched for Ija based on the last known GPS location provided by his wife," he said.
Their night-long search stretched as far as Muar, but to no avail. It was not until the next day that a clue emerged.
'Coincidentally, a Rela officer told us they spotted a car in the river. When I took a closer look, I swam straight towards it.
'I saw the car accessory shop sticker belonging to Ija on the rear window and I was certain it was his car,' Syahmi said.
He added that the car windows were open and the doors unlocked, but murky water made it difficult to tell if Ija was inside.
'I tried diving and felt like there was something when I extended my foot, but I was not sure. I immediately informed the police and the fire department came to inspect,' he shared. Search and rescue operations at Sungai Tui involve both police and fire department personnel.
According to Syahmi, Ija had planned to drop off his car at a friend's workshop in Muar before visiting his younger brother, Tengku Abdul Aziz, in Bukit Kepong.
Syahmi also mentioned that Ija never had enemies.
'We have known each other for a long time, through thick and thin. Ija was always a very positive person.
'The last time I saw Ija was the previous Sunday and that night we managed to talk about shirts over the phone,' he said.
Syahmi hopes for Ija's safe discovery and prays the authorities find new leads.
Pagoh Fire and Rescue Station Operation Commander, Nor Alfatah Omar, confirmed his team responded to a call on Tuesday and found a Perodua Axia submerged in roughly two metres of river water.
Meanwhile, Muar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz, confirmed that a full search and rescue (SAR) operation is underway.
'Police urge members of the public with any information related to the incident to come forward or contact the Muar District Police Headquarters (IPD) to assist in the investigation,' he said.

Disabled baker loses RM500k in fake TikTok job scam in Penang
GEORGE TOWN: A disabled baker in Penang has lost more than RM500,000 after falling for a bogus job offer advertised on TikTok, according to acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. He said the incident began in early December last year when the 45-year-old man was first contacted via WhatsApp in early December last year by a woman who claimed to offer a lucrative job selling children's toys through the platform. 'He was promised profits of 10 to 15 per cent and was asked to make payments to cover the cost of goods allegedly ordered by customers,' he said in a statement tonight. The victim proceeded to make 41 cash deposit transactions amounting to RM523,350 into five different bank accounts between Dec 18, 2024, and July 14, 2025. Despite repeated payments, the promised returns never materialised, and the suspect continued requesting additional funds under the guise of job-related expenses. The victim lodged a report yesterday at the Timur Laut district police headquarters (IPD) upon realising he had been scammed, with the case being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama

Motoring influencer fakes disappearance, flees abroad
MUAR: Motoring influencer Tengku Nizaruddin Tengku Zainudin, 38, who was reported missing after his car allegedly plunged into Sungai Tui, Jalan Bukit Kepong here last Monday, is believed to have staged his own disappearance and fled to a neighbouring country. Muar police chief ACP Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said investigations showed that the suspect's younger brother was also involved by providing false information for personal reasons. He said Tengku Abd Aziz, 30, lodged a report at the Lenga Police Station claiming that his brother, also known as Ija, went missing while heading to Muar to repair his car. 'A search and rescue operation was launched after the case was classified as a missing person. However, further investigation raised doubts about the report, and police believe the disappearance was fabricated. 'Investigations also revealed that the suspect had submerged his wife's Perodua Axia in the river before fleeing to a neighbouring country. His brother later admitted to being complicit and pretending to help with the search,' he said in a statement today. Raiz Mukhliz said statements from both individuals have been recorded and further investigation will proceed once police obtain an order to investigate (OTI) from the deputy public prosecutor. The case is being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code for providing false information and Section 109 for abetting a criminal offence. Earlier, media reported that the man, a businessman and vehicle accessories shop owner, had gone missing after the Perodua Axia he was driving was believed to have plunged into the river. - Bernama
