Earthquake of 7.4 magnitude strikes off Russia's Kamchatka region

Tsunami alert after powerful quakes strike off coast of Russia. Photo: Supplied / USGS A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near the coast of the Kamchatka region in the far east of Russia, earthquake monitoring agencies said, with Russian emergency services watching for possible tsunami waves in the region. The earthquake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka at a depth of 10km on Sunday (local time), shortly after a previous quake, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) data. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) showed the earthquake to be of 7.4 magnitude. GFZ also updated the quake to a 7.4 magnitude after first reporting it at 6.7 magnitude. Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported on Sunday, citing local emergency services, that waves of up to 60cm could reach the sparsely populated Aleutsky District on the Commander Islands. Waves of up to 40cm may affect the Ust-Kamchatsky region in eastern Kamchatka, while the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky urban district - the most densely populated area in the south-eastern part of the peninsula and home to the regional capital - might see waves of up to 15cm. The US National Tsunami Warning Center cancelled a tsunami watch for the state of Hawaii. - Reuters

A tsunami alert has been issued after multiple earthquakes struck off the coast of Russia. Photo / US Geological Survey A series of powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Russia's far east on Sunday, triggering a tsunami alert, the US Geological Survey said. Earlier 5.0-magnitude and 6.7-magnitude earthquakes did not initially trigger a tsunami alert, but were followed by a 7.4-magnitude quake at 8.49pm GMT, prompting the USGS to warn that 'hazardous tsunami waves are possible'. It said the tsunami alert zone applied for coastal areas within a radius of 300km of the epicentre in the Pacific Ocean, off the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The state of Alaska sits across the Bering Sea from the city, but no US territory appeared to be in the alert zone. The initial earthquakes were followed by several aftershocks, including another 6.7-magnitude quake, said USGS.

South Korea rain official death toll rises to 14

Photo: YONHAP / AFP At least two people were killed during heavy downpours in South Korea, the interior ministry said, bringing the death toll to 14 from torrential rains this week. The toll could rise, with 12 people still unaccounted for after five days of heavy rain. Close to 170mm of rain hit Gapyeong county in Gyeonggi province - 70km east of Seoul - early Sunday (local time), leaving at least two dead and four missing. A woman in her 70s was killed when her house collapsed in a landslide, while the body of a man in his 40s was found near a bridge after he drowned, Yonhap news agency reported. The total number of deaths from the five-day deluge now stands at at least 14, according to official data. Most of the deaths occurred in the southern county of Sancheong, which has seen nearly 800mm of rain since Wednesday. Two bodies were found there early Sunday during search and rescue operations, raising the number of deaths in the rural county of 33,000 to eight, with six still missing. South Korea typically experiences monsoon rains in July and is usually well-prepared. But this week, the country's southern regions were hit by especially intense downpours, with some of the heaviest hourly rainfall on record, official weather data showed. Scientists say climate change has made extreme weather events more frequent and intense around the world. In 2022, South Korea endured record-breaking rains and flooding, which killed at least 11 people. - AFP
