‘Cashing cheques': Footy boxing ‘sideshow' trashed as Tim Tszyu primed for ‘redemption'
Tim Tszyu (25-2) takes on Sebastian Fundora (22-1) at the MGM Grand for the WBC superwelterweight title on Sunday, more than a year after Fundora handed the Aussie his first ever loss in a Las Vegas nightmare.

A nasty gash from an errant Fundora elbow opened up on Tszyu's forehead and blood poured out of the wound as Tszyu bravely fought on, going the distance.
He lost on the scorecards and his year from hell continued when he got knocked out by Bakhram Murtazaliev last October, appearing spooked by the previous fight.
But Tszyu got back in the winner's circle with a commanding stoppage win over Joey Spencer in April and now he has his sights set on getting revenge on Fundora after the 'Towering Inferno' threatened to derail his career.
On the other side of the world, Paul Gallen and Sonny Bill Williams fight in Sydney on Wednesday night, finally getting in the ring together as the pair of forty-something retired footy players put a decade of bad blood on the line.
AFL great and boxing aficionado Jonathan Brown will be part of Main Event's coverage for Tszyu's fight in Las Vegas, and he told news.com.au that fight is the one worth watching this week.
'Well Tim's fighting for a world title, so he's the best in the world,' Brown said.
'Good on Paul and Sonny for still having a crack and they're in magnificent condition. They had magnificent rugby league careers, and good luck to them.
'But if you're a true fight fan, even if you're not a fight fan, the Tszyu name is legendary in our country and Tim will further that.
'This is the top of the world. The best boxer in the world at this weight division.'
Fox Sports voiceover guru Matt Nable sums up the dynamic about the two fights, which have the same $70 pay-per-view cost, in Main Event's hype package you can watch in the video above.

Gallen has amassed an eye-watering fortune of more than $25 million from his boxing career, earning more from his 18 fights than he did from his NRL career.
Williams and Gallen are set to pocket around $1 million each from this fight.
Tszyu primed for 'redemption'
The stage is set in Vegas this weekend for Tszyu to avenge his loss to Fundora and keep his dream of becoming undisputed boxing world champion alive.
'It's a huge opportunity,' Brown said.
'The journey Tim's been through, he lost those couple of fights — there were a lot of questions about whether he was good enough or able to get back there.
'The story of redemption is something that draws people in and that's why people should watch Tim fight.
'You need that defining moment as an athlete. Tim would have felt like he's been in the depths of hell over an 18-month period.
'He went over to Orlando with high expectations and got cleaned up by Murtazaliev, which would have been shattering. He had to take stock, rebuild himself and he's come out the other side and walked towards the fire.
'It's great the opportunity (of a rematch) has come quicker than expected — to be able to get revenge and get that belt back.
'He was clearly the better fighter early in that fight against Fundora before the cut. Hopefully he can make amends, get that back and show what he's truly made of.
'To do it in Las Vegas is huge. He's got the family legacy. Hopefully he can put the Tszyu name in bright lights in his own right and Kostya's not just at the top, Tim goes to the top as well and mentioned in the same conversation. It's the biggest fight for an Australian in quite a while.'
It's a stacked card — Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is fighting Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title at 46 years of years of age in his first bout since he lost a title fight to Yordenis Ugas in 2021.
'I saw him fight Ben Horn, which was amazing. One of the greatest sporting events I've ever been to at Suncorp Stadium,' Brown said.
'To see him in Las Vegas and be there for Tim is going to be pretty cool.'
Also on the card is Mexican boxing star Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz, who takes on Angel Fierro at super lightweight.
'With Pitbull and Pacquiao fighting, it's a massive card,' Brown said.
Brown was a fierce competitor on the field for the Brisbane Lions but he has no desire to fight, apart from the odd sparring session.
'I've put the shield down, it's been a long time,' Brown said.
'The last time I sparred was against my young fella, he's 12. He put one on me and he was ringing for about two nights. If I can't cover a 12-year-old, it'd be more I'm struggling.
'No plans to jump in the ring, certainly not anymore.'

Trainer Tony Ball was unable to get a winner on the board over the two day Grafton carnival but he's hoping he can do so a few days later. Ball makes the trip north again from Taree to Grafton with three horses in the float, all of which he's got a good deal of confidence about. The most interesting of Ball's brigade comes up in the feature of the day with Xtra Approval getting a good drop in weight for the Maclean Cup (1400m). The six-year-old son of Xtravagant found the 60kg at Hawkesbury last start a touch too tough but drops way down to 55kg with apprentice hoop Shae Wilkes in the saddle. 'It's a nice race for him and he gets about 5kg off some of those horses in the race,' Ball said. 'I thought he ran well at Hawkesbury the other day but just probably didn't appreciate the weight on a heavy track. 'So he now goes down to 55kg with Shae (Wilkes) utilising her claim and I'd expect him to be hard to beat.' Xtra Approval also finds his sweet spot at 1400m after running over the mile last time out. 'Getting back to 1400m probably suits him a bit too,' Ball said. 'He won a Kempsey Cup at the trip late last year and probably just found that mile a touch too far last start.' Earlier in the card will see three-year-old filly Felasuvi have her third run for the stable after starting her career off in Victoria with Leon and Troy Corstens. The daughter of Star Witness was eye catching at Coffs Harbour at her stable debut before finding a Class 1 a touch too tough at this track over the 1006m. She now steps up to 1100m in the second race on the card and goes from a good track but to a rain affected one. 'She gets a senior rider on this week with Siena not there so Matty (McGuren) goes on and that should be good for her,' Ball said. 'With the way the race looks to play out, she'll get the gun run from barrier four and get her chance. 'If she's good enough she'll win but if she's not, we'll just have to go back to the drawing board with her. 'But I'd expect her to go well and she's pulled up a treat from last Sunday so no issues with the seven day back up for her.' Thirty five minutes later will see Ball's bargain buy Where's The Fire look the break through for a win. The five-year-old gelding would be the best bred galloper going around at Grafton being by I Am Invincible and out of a Snitzel mare. 'It's not too often you get an I Am Invincible for $15,000,' Ball said. 'We got him about a year ago and he's been a handy little horse for us. 'I think he won at Grafton before I had him and he's had a few more runs at the track so he knows it well. 'With the drop in grade and Matty going on board, I reckon he'll run a good race. 'He should be nearing his top after two runs now this time in so hopefully he can break through for a win for us.' It's a capacity field for Where's The Fire's race with 16 acceptances including two emergencies for the 1100m contest. Thought FLEE WITH MEE (2) would appreciate the easy contest. She went close a few starts back and the booking of Matt McGuren suits for this race. Awkward barrier but think she's the best horse in the race. IMMORTELLE (6) should get the run of the race and so often in these open affairs, that's the winning factor. STAR OF KONGO (12) is a 21 start maiden but is knocking on the door for that fist win. Honest on pace effort off a six week freshen up last start and should only improve off that. Bet: Flee With Me to win. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 7: Andrew Tom Builder Pty Ltd Mdn Plate 1100m MEGHAN (10) should get the run of the race from barrier four. She gets here in career best form and will appreciate the strong tempo that looks likely here. SHOWMAN (1) just missed last time out at Murwillumbah. Tricky barrier for Shae Wilkes to navigate but he's probably the best horse in this race. SPILLS (2) burnt petrol early last start and it told late. Can take a sit from a wide barrier today and turn in an improved effort. SECRET KEEPER (6) goes in the mix as well. Bet: Meghan each-way.

Hawks veteran Jack Gunston denied ‘best goal of his career'
A set of Port Adelaide finger tips denied Jack Gunston one of the greatest goals of his 276-game career on Saturday afternoon. Trainer Bjorn Baker is considering giving Robusto another Group 1 crack in early spring after his tough galloper came out on top in a dogfight with Accredited at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Robusto and Accredited went nose-and-nose for much of the straight as Baker 's gelding got the nod in a photo finish to the Listed $200,000 Winter Challenge (1500m). Robusto has already been valuable horse since joining Baker's stable after Darby purchased the gelding online for $160,000.
