Former Canada coach Priestman returns to football in NZ after ban

WELLINGTON: Bev Priestman, who was sacked as Canada's women's coach for her part in the use of drones to spy on the opposition at the Paris Olympics, will make her return to the game in New Zealand at Wellington Phoenix.
The 39-year-old Englishwoman, who led Canada to Olympic gold in 2021, has just completed a one-year FIFA ban from football-related activity for her role in flying a drone over a closed New Zealand training session at last year's Summer Games.
Priestman has been handed a two-year deal by Phoenix to coach their women's side, who finished ninth of the 12 teams in the otherwise Australian A-League Women earlier this year.

'We're really pleased to be able to welcome Bev back to football,' Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison said in a club statement.
'We all know she's had a period of time away from the game, but we understand the circumstances and we're really comfortable with this appointment.
'This is a step up in an exciting era for the Phoenix women's team.'
Priestman is no stranger to her new home, having previously served as New Zealand Football's director of football development and married former Football Ferns midfielder and current Phoenix academy director Emma Humphries.
'Huge thanks to (the club) for giving me this chance to come back to the game I love, and hopefully bring some special moments to not only this city, but this country,' said the former assistant coach of England's women's team.
'Coming back to New Zealand and seeing the Phoenix week in week out as the only professional women's team has been amazing. We have a responsibility now to fly the flag for this country and try to do something special.'

FIFA's Infantino offers support to female referee Garcia over death threats

FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed support for referee Katia Itzel Garcia and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) after the official revealed she was subjected to online abuse following a Leagues Cup match. Garcia, who has officiated in other men's competitions including Liga MX, the Gold Cup and the Olympic Games, reported receiving death threats after refereeing the Leagues Cup clash between FC Cincinnati and Monterrey on Thursday. Her decision to award a goal to the MLS side that appeared to be offside fuelled outrage among Monterrey fans after Cincinnati went on to win 3-2. 'I am dismayed and saddened by the threats against referee Katia Itzel following her performance in the Leagues Cup first round matches between Monterrey and Cincinnati,' Infantino wrote on his Instagram account on Monday. 'There is no place in football and society for abuse, discrimination and violence of any kind. Wirtz's creativity can make up for Alexander-Arnold loss, says Liverpool boss Slot 'At FIFA, we stand in solidarity with the FMF and CONCACAF in condemning the actions of those who make these unacceptable threats. We offer our unconditional support in holding those responsible to account.' The FMF said in a statement on Saturday that it 'will advise and accompany Garcia in the complaint process before the corresponding authorities'.

Alexander Zverev fights back to oust defending champion Popyrin from Canadian Open

Alexander Zverev rallied from a set down to beat defending champion Alexei Popyrin 6-7(8) 6-4 6-3 in Toronto and move into the semi-finals of the Canadian Open on Monday. Top seed Zverev was unable to convert two set points in a tight first set, but built up 3-0 leads in both the second and third sets to clinch the win in two hours and 42 minutes. The victory took the German's head-to-head record against Australian Popyrin to 4-0 and sent him to his 75th semi-final on the ATP Tour, joining Novak Djokovic as the only active men's tennis player to have reached the mark. 'I had to tell myself, even though I lost the first set, I thought we were both playing actually quite well,' said Zverev, who won the Canadian Open in 2017. 'I had to find a return position in the beginning because he's a very big server, and when he gets into a rhythm, it's very difficult against him. 'I did that in the second and third set. Honestly, I can't complain about much. I played one loose game on my serve in the second set, but apart from that, it was pretty good.' Zverev next faces Russian Karen Khachanov, who beat Alex Michelsen of the United States 6-4 7-6(3). Mboko's run continues Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko stormed into the semi-finals of the women's tournament in Montreal with a 6-4 6-2 win over Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro to continue her fairytale run. The 18-year-old, ranked 85th in the world, found herself a break down early in the second set, but won six straight games to become the first Canadian to reach the semi-finals of the Canadian Open since 2019. 'I'm so excited to be in the semi-final here. I want to thank everyone for your support once again. It has been unreal,' said Mboko, who beat No. 1 seed Coco Gauff on Saturday and is set to enter the top 50. Mboko next takes on Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, who was leading 6-1 2-1 when her opponent, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, was forced to retire from their quarter-final match due to a wrist injury. Rybakina will meet Mboko for the second time in as many weeks, with the ninth-seeded Kazakh winning 6-3 7-5 when the pair faced off in the Washington Open last month.

Won't alter aggressive batting style: Mitchell Owen

Australia all-rounder Mitchell Owen was in action during the West Indies series. Photo: AFP Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen said he always plays attacking cricket and made it clear that he will never change his aggressive batting approach. Speaking to the media about his style, Owen emphasised that he intends to stick with the mindset that has brought him success. "If I am opening the batting or if I'm batting down the order, not much will change," Owen said. "I just try and hit the ball. If I start thinking about defending, I go into my shell, and that doesn't work for me. So I'll be keeping the same mindset." Owen is likely to feature in the middle order if handed an ODI debut, as Australia looks to fill the finishing role vacated by Maxwell. Reflecting on the hectic period, Owen said the experience has helped him understand how to prepare better. "I've learned to find my own process because you don't get long training blocks. You have to be ready to play every couple of days," Owen said. "Different conditions in Pakistan, India, the U.S., and the West Indies have helped me gain valuable experience." It is pertinent to mention that the 23-year-old, who showcased his big-hitting ability against West Indies with scores of 50, 36, two and 37 at a strike rate of 192.30 batting at number six has been named in Australia's ODI squad for the three-match home series against South Africa. The matches against South Africa will be Australia's first in the format since the retirements of Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell from one-day cricket. The series between Australia and South Africa will begin with the T20Is, with the first two matches scheduled in Darwin on August 10 and 12, followed by the final game in Cairns on August 16. The ODI series will start on August 19, with the opening match in Cairns, before concluding with two games in Mackay on August 22 and 24. Australia T20I squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. Australia ODI squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Lance Morris, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa..
