Matt Savoie poised to take big step with Edmonton Oilers next season, says GM Stan Bowman
Photo credit: Steven Ellis/Daily Faceoff Matt Savoie may be on the verge of a breakout season. Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman recently expressed confidence in the 21-year-old forward, suggesting that Savoie could take a major step forward in the 2025–26 campaign. With veteran departures creating lineup openings, and a need for penalty-killing depth, the spotlight is now firmly on the young forward to prove himself in training camp. Edmonton Oilers GM backs Matt Savoie for expanded role next season Stan Bowman didn't hold back when talking about Matt Savoie's future in Edmonton. 'There is some growth from within. I think Matt Savoie is probably poised to take a big step next year,' the Oilers GM said during a recent interview. With the exits of Connor Brown and Corey Perry in free agency, the Oilers have key roster spots to fill, particularly on the penalty kill. Savoie, acquired last summer in a trade that sent Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio to the Buffalo Sabres, impressed last season in the AHL with 54 points in 66 games for Bakersfield. But more importantly, his defensive responsibility and special teams play caught the attention of the Oilers' staff. Penalty kill and even strength performance key to NHL shot While Savoie played only four games with the Oilers last season, head coach Kris Knoblauch noted his reliability at even strength and his promise on the penalty kill. 'He didn't have any penalty-kill time when he was with us, but certainly, we saw him being a reliable two-way player at 5-on-5,' Knoblauch said. The Oilers believe Savoie's opportunity will lie primarily in shorthanded situations. 'The opportunity for Savoie is on the penalty kill, not that he can't be on the power play, but I definitely see him being a big part of our penalty kill,' Bowman emphasized. Youth movement could define Oilers' 2025–26 season With a veteran core still intact but the team falling just short of a Stanley Cup in back-to-back seasons, Edmonton appears ready to inject youth into its lineup. Savoie stands out as one of the top candidates to step up and make an impact. Training camp will be his proving ground, and all signs point to a real chance at a full-time NHL role. If he delivers, Savoie could be one of the surprise contributors in a pivotal Oilers season. Conor Timmins reunites with Maple Leafs' Bobby McMann and Joseph Woll at Coldplay concert in Toronto
Photo Via Conor Timmins' Instagram Toronto's music scene was alive with excitement as Coldplay played four sold-out shows at the newly opened Rogers Stadium. But for Maple Leafs fans, a different kind of buzz surrounded the event when former Toronto defenseman Conor Timmins posted photos on Instagram with Bobby McMann and Joseph Woll, his former teammates. Now with the Buffalo Sabres, Timmins' post sparked reactions from Leafs Nation as the trio enjoyed the concert and reunited off the ice. Conor Timmins shares Coldplay concert moment with Bobby McMann and Joseph Woll Earlier this week, Conor Timmins took to Instagram to share pictures from one of Coldplay's Toronto performances, where he was joined by Bobby McMann and Joseph Woll. Although no longer a Maple Leaf, Timmins showed he's still closely connected with his former teammates. The post was a reminder of the bonds formed in the NHL that often outlast roster moves and trades. Timmins playfully referred to the new Rogers Stadium as the "Middle of Nowhere," joking about the venue's remote location. The image quickly circulated among fans online, with many appreciating the glimpse into the players' off-ice friendships. It also highlighted how players stay connected even when wearing different jerseys. Their appearance together at a high-profile concert offered fans a light-hearted moment amid the off-season and a look at the off-ice chemistry that often translates into strong locker-room culture. Though there was no formal team event or public media appearance tied to the outing, the reunion gave fans a welcome distraction from the long offseason and showed the human side of pro athletes. It was a night of music, laughs, and friendship, one that connected both hockey and pop culture fans alike. What began as a Coldplay concert turned into a feel-good Leafs moment thanks to Conor Timmins' Instagram post. While he may suit up for Buffalo now, his link to Toronto remains strong, and that small reunion reminded fans just how tight NHL bonds can be. ENG-W vs IND-W: Jones, Ecclestone help England draw level series in rain-affected game
Amy Jones and Sophie Ecclestone were the stars of the show as England defeated India by x wickets to level the series 1-1. Ecclestone picked up three wickets for 27 in her six-over spell to restrict India to 143/8 in 29 overs as the match was affected by rain at the very beginning. Needing 144 runs to win, Jones and Tammy Beaumont set up the chase with their first wicket stand before rain came to play spoilsport once again. advertisementIn the end, the target was revised to 115 from 24 overs, and Sophia Dunkley and Jones ensured that the win was sealed with the former hitting a boundary. India had come into the contest on the back of a sensational win over the hosts in the first ODI where Deepti Sharma starred for them. But both teams were forced to wait indoors as there was heavy rain around the stadium and the covers were firmly on. The fans turned up in good numbers, but everyone had to wait for four hours before the game got underway. ENG-W VS IND-W 2ND ODI HIGHLIGHTS England won the toss and put India into bat and the decision proved to be a masterstroke. Pratika Rawal, who did face some disciplinary action after her run-ins with English players in the first match, didn't stay for too long and was cleaned up by Em Arlott. Smriti Mandhana, who was India's best batter on the day, looked solid during her knock of 42 off 51 balls but failed to get support from the other end. India batters looked to be in a hurryOnce Harleen Deol came on, she and Mandhana slowly steadied things with a 40-run stand before Ecclestone came to the fore. The left-arm spinner dismissed Harleen and that sort of opened the floodgates for England. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (7), Jemimah Rodrigues (3) and Richa Ghosh (2), all looked to be in a hurry to up the ante and failed miserably as India got reduced to 72 for five. Mandhana looked to be waging a lone battle and finally got some assistance from Deepti, and the duo added 26 runs. But the wicket of Mandhana pegged back India once again as the onus was on Deepti to perform a rescue act. She got support from Arundhati Reddy and the duo ensured India was setup for a good finish in the end. Deepti's cameo of 30 ensured they got to 143 runs in 29 overs. India's bowling lacks biteThe Indian bowlers and fielding seemed to be lacking some bite on Saturday as they failed to stop the run flow. While the pitch was offering some grip and turn, the Indian spinners were unable to have the same effect as their English counterparts. advertisementThis allowed Beaumont and Jones to get off to a flier in chasing the target down. Beaumont, especially, looked to be in fine touch as she played her shots to counter the Indian attack. The duo added 54 in 62 balls before Sneh Rana brought India back into the contest. However, this momentum was quickly ended by Jones, who scored 46 off 57 balls and got a couple of boundaries in before rain came to have England sweating with 18.2 overs bowled. Time was not the friend of the hosts as rain came pelting down and eight balls needed to be delivered before the game could be considered as complete. Thankfully, for England, the rain relented and they were able to get the job done despite losing captain Nat Sciver-Brunt right after the game restarted. The decided will now be played on Tuesday, July 22 in Durham. - EndsTune InMust Watch
