Kane, Diaz strike as Bayern beat Stuttgart in German Super Cup
STUTTGART: Harry Kane and Luis Diaz scored as Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 2-1 away on Saturday to lift the German Super Cup for a 10th time. The match, which opens the German season with the league and cup winners facing off, was held for the first time since it was renamed for football legend Franz Beckenbauer, who died in 2024. A year into their attacking partnership, Michael Olise and Kane were again Bayern's most dangerous, combining for the opener with 18 minutes played. Off balance and falling, Kane collected Olise's pass and hit a low shot across the grass and into the bottom corner for his 86th goal in his 97th Bayern appearance. Pushed on by a 60,000-strong home crowd, Stuttgart went looking for an equalizer late in the second half but Bayern broke through on the counter, Diaz heading in from close range with 13 minutes left. Diaz ran to the corner post and sat on the grass, mimicking former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota's video-game celebration. It was the latest tribute for Portugal winger Jota, who died in a car accident in July. Stuttgart pulled a goal back through Jamie Leweling in stoppage time. The win netted Kane a second team trophy of his career after the 32-year-old broke his duck to win the Bundesliga last season. Praising his charges for a 'deserved win', Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich said the victory would set the tone for the season. 'To show we're here' 'We wanted to show everyone that we're here. Wins and titles are not a given—we have to appreciate them,' Kimmich told Germany's Sat 1 network. The lead-up was dominated by transfer speculation around freshly-minted Germany striker Nick Woltemade, with Stuttgart reportedly rebuffing several Bayern offers. While Stuttgart CEO Alexander Wehrle ruled out a possible transfer moments before the match, on the field Bayern stuck to Woltemade, keeping a lid on the home side's most dangerous attacking threat. Olise created the opener, curling a dangerous chip between Stuttgart's two central defenders. Centre-back Luca Jaquez stuck out his leg only to knock the ball into Kane's path and the England captain expertly hammered home. Olise headed over the bar with 38 minutes played and Kane forced a superb save from Fabian Bredlow midway through the second half. Stuttgart sensed an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining and Woltemade went close, but the 1.98-metre tall striker headed over the bar. Moments later Bayern's veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saved spectacularly, getting an outstretched arm to a Lewelling shot which took a wicked late deflection. Bayern put the match to bed in the 77th minute, Diaz leaping to head a Gnabry cross past the helpless Bredlow. Leweling headed in a goal in stoppage time but it was not enough as Bayern lifted the Super Cup for a record 10th time. Bayern open the Bundesliga season on Friday at home against Leipzig while Stuttgart face Union Berlin in the German capital a day later. — AFP

Haaland fires Man City to opening win at Wolves
Trafford makes first senior appearance for club after returning for second spell WOLVERHAMPTON: Manchester City signaled their intent to take back the Premier League title as Erling Haaland struck twice in a 4-0 win at Wolves on Saturday to begin their campaign. After four consecutive titles, City finished a distant third last season as Pep Guardiola's men failed to win any trophy for the first time in eight years. New signings Tijjani Reijnders, who was the star of the show at Molineux, and Rayan Cherki were also on target to give Guardiola hope his side will be back in the title race this season. 'We knew he is a top signing for the coming years for City,' said Guardiola on Reijnders outstanding Premier League debut after a £46.5 million move from AC Milan. 'Of course we have changed after last season with many injuries and problems - fresh energy this season. 'It's quite similar to when I first arrived. We had a lot of players who came when I first were outstanding and now the club has to refresh for the next years and be consistent.' Guardiola made a bold call amid ongoing uncertainty over City's goalkeeping situation. James Trafford made his first senior appearance for the club after returning for a second spell at the Etihad from Burnley. Ederson was not in the travelling squad as he is reportedly close to a move to Galatasaray, which could see City pursue a deal for out-of-favor Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Wolves are among the favorites to be relegated after losing talisman Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. Vitor Pereira's side were ultimately well beaten, but the outcome could have been very different had they made the most of an uncertain City start. 'This league is a very difficult league and we need more solutions,' said Pereira in a plea for more recruits. 'We need help so I hope the club can help us.' City target title Instead, the game swung decisively in City's favor with two goals in three minutes, thanks to Reijnders creativity and goal threat from midfield. The Dutch international jinked through the Wolves midfield before dinking a pass into Rico Lewis, who squared for Haaland to tap in at the back post. Moments later Oscar Bobb released Reijnders to arrow in a precise finish on his left foot. 'Really nice to start with a goal an assist,' said Reijnders. 'It's something you always dream about starting like this. 'Our main goal is to win the Premier League. We all know what we want and we are really sharp to reach that goal.' Trafford did not have many saves to make, but showed his ability with his feet to begin a flowing move for City's third. The England goalkeeper cushioned a long pass into Reijnders, who played a one-two with Bobb, before cutting the ball back for a clinical Haaland finish. Haaland was denied the chance to net a hat-trick as he was replaced by Cherki 17 minutes from time. The French international took just another eight minutes to make his mark by picking out the bottom corner from outside the box. Tougher tests of this new-look City are around the corner with Tottenham, Brighton, Arsenal and Manchester United in their next four league games. But the convincing nature of victory was more like the City of old, which will strike fear into their title rivals. — AFP

Kuwait Club adds American stars Vassell, Moore, and extends Jones' contract
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 17: Kuwait Club has strengthened its first basketball team for the new season by signing American players Keishawn Vassell and Charlie Moore, while renewing the contract of fellow American Jamal Jones for another year. Vassell, a 2.6-meter center with experience in multiple international leagues, is expected to be a major asset as Kuwait Club aims to defend its league and cup titles. Moore, a point guard who previously played for Al-Ahly Tripoli in Libya, brings leadership on the court and strong outside shooting skills. Jamal Jones joined the team late last season and played a key role in securing both the league and cup championships, earning him a contract extension. On the local front, Kuwait released Hussein Al-Khabaz and Abdulrahman Al-Jum'ah after their contracts expired, while signing Mohamed Al-Dakhil from Al-Qadisiya. The team will hold a 10-day overseas training camp in Serbia starting in early September, featuring several friendly matches to prepare for the new season.
