GMA Kapuso Foundation to build hanging bridge in Rodriguez, Rizal
According to a "24 Oras" report on Wednesday, teachers and students have to cross a raging river in Barangay Puray to get to school even amid inclement weather conditions, and so do members of the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous community who have to carry their root crops while crossing the tributary.
'Pag ito po kasi bahang-baha, 'yung aking mga kamag-anak, namamaybay sila roon, diyan sila dumadaan sa gubat para lang makalusot sila rito sa kabila. Halos wala naman kasing tuloy-tuloy na daan, kumbaga mahigit isang oras din," said resident Rolando Aquino.
GMA Kapuso Foundation will construct the bridge under its Kapuso Tulay Para sa Kaunlaran Project with the help of its sponsors, partners, donors, and volunteers.
Per GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP/COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog, they chose this area in Rodriguez, Rizal because it was heavily hit by typhoons Carina and Enteng last year.
"Hindi sila makatawid, ang taas-taas ng tubig. Sisiguraduhin ho natin na hindi na ho kayo maa-isolate," she said.
Meanwhile, Armed Forces of the Philippines Deputy Chief of Staff for Civil Military Operations, Major General Arvin Lagamon, said that the military's participation in the project will not just involve security but also speeding up the bridge's construction.
"Ang physical na contribution ng LGU ay 'yung mga aggregates and to facilitate 'yung mobility ng lahat ng mga materyales," Rodriguez, Rizal Mayor Ronnie Evangelista also said.
For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. Visit the GMA Kapuso Foundation website for more information.

Heavy rains dampen Cagayan before ‘Crising' makes landfall
'Inaalala namin yung bahay namin,' said Roberto Ancheta, whose personal belongings were already packed. Cagayan experienced heavy downpour on Friday, even before Tropical Storm Crising made landfall in the province. According to James Agustin's report in '24 Oras', the rains caused gutter-high floods in Iguig. Meanwhile, residents near the sea in Barangay Baua in Gonzaga were told to evacuate. 'Inaalala namin yung bahay namin,' said Roberto Ancheta, whose personal belongings were already packed. (We worry about our house.) Roberto's elderly mother, on the other hand, had already evacuated. 'Malakas ang alon sa dagat. Lumalaki na ngayon, kaya pumunta kami dito,' said Charry Ancheta. (The waves in the sea are powerful. They are getting bigger now, that's why we came here.) But other families have yet to evacuate despite the threat of the storm. 'Kapag magiging worse na siguro o kaya makita namin na hindi na maganda yung panahon, that's the time na lilikas na kami,' said Rodante Acosta. (If the situation worsens or if the weather is no longer good, that's the time that we will evacuate.) Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation in the sea near Barangay Baua due to the powerful waves brought by the inclement weather. Hence, fishermen had to temporarily stop their livelihood. 'Mahirap, dito kami nakasalalay sa pagkain namin,' said fisherman Honrado Dela Cruz, who had to stop fishing for two days. (It's hard for us now because it's where we depend on our food.) Further, some roads and bridges in Baggao are currently impassable due to water from the creek and river spilling over. –Vince Angelo Ferreras/NB, GMA Integrated News

Irrigation gate left open blamed for flashfloods in Umingan
Belen Dano is one of the unfortunate residents who were not able to save anything in their house due to the flash flood. Their car and motorcycles submerged into the waters, and their puppies drowned. Authorities in Umingan, Pangasinan, blamed an irrigation gate left open for the flash floods in the town as Tropical Storm Crising brought rains over Luzon. According to the report of GMA Regional TV's Jasmin Gabriel-Galban in '24 Oras' on Friday, motorists had a hard time traversing the roads due to flood waters. For instance, two motorcycle riders tried to cross, but they fell because of the flood. Residents and rescue personnel joined hands to save the two riders using a rope. The flood waters entered houses in the municipality. Nearly 300 houses in five barangays were affected by the flash flood, the report said. Belen Dano is one of the unfortunate residents who were not able to save anything in their house due to the flash flood. Their car and motorcycles submerged into the waters, and their puppies drowned. 'Nandiyan na yung tubig, wala na, wala ka nang magawa kasi nandiyan na,' she said. (The water has already entered, and we cannot do anything about it then.) Aside from the open irrigation gate, the municipal authorities also found that the gate of the river system was not immediately opened. This caused the water that was supposed to flow to the river to go to the irrigation canals. 'Since medyo nagkapondo na po ng tubig doon sa ating river, malakas na po yung buhos nun, and then yung nga po nakasara doon sa main gate natin, so lahat ng flow ng tubig ay going sa Masiil-Siil irrigation canals,' said Kennedy Sonaco, research and planning officer of Umingan MDRRMO. (Since the water in the river was already full and the main gate was closed, all the water went straight to the irrigation canals in Masiil-Siil.) Further investigation showed that the barangay officials of Masiil-Siil are responsible for opening and closing the gates of the irrigation canal. The barangay officials said that they did not anticipate the high volume of rainwater; hence, they were not able to immediately open the main gate, according to the report. Other than the barangays in Umingan, the barangays in the town of Balungao also experienced knee-deep flash floods. –Vince Angelo Ferreras/GMA Integrated News
