Bay County TDC invests in SS United States artificial reef project

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Scuba diving has always been big business for the dive centers here in Bay County. But some are worried are that having the world's largest artificial reef a few counties away could make their businesses much smaller.
'If they don't put it in that corner that we're asking for, then it won't be reachable from Panama City. So it'll be reachable by Destin only,' Panama City Dive Center owner Patrick Green said.

The SS United States arrived from Philadelphia last week. Okaloosa County commissioners are gambling the last of the great ocean liners will be a major tourist attraction, once it's sunk off their coastline next year.
They're considering 3 proposed sites as the ship's final resting place. The furthest site is 55 nautical miles away from Panama City, which is too far for dive boat operators to reach efficiently.
The closest is about 35 nautical miles from the St. Andrews Pass. That's the one the local diver operators are supporting. They say that location would benefit everyone.
'If we look at the economic impacts of similar type ships that have been deployed before, it's something between doubling the existing business or roughly doing like another 7000 passengers a year, which is huge. It's a big deal for us,' Green said.
Local tourism officials also recognize the significance of the project.
'It's going to sit in 180 feet of water. But the superstructure and the decks itself are going to be accessible just to, you know, folks who can dive 60, 70 feet of water. So, I mean, it really is going to be a great dive for all sorts of different divers,' Bay County Tourist Development Council Executive Director Dan Rowe said.

In fact, some TDC members believe the SS United States will be enough of a game changer, that they want to invest in the project, to help get that closer location. The Bay County TDC approved a request to expend up to $3 million over two fiscal years for the promotion and marketing of the SS United States.
$2 million will go towards the ship's deployment and $1 million will be spent in promotion. Okaloosa County commissioners will make the final decision on the artificial reef's location.
'They've told me that this is a decision that they will make sooner than later,' Rowe said.
$1 million dollars of the county's investment will build a land-based museum to display the ship's artifacts. Okaloosa county officials believe the SS United States will even draw tourists that don't dive.

Gulf Coast State College introduces new hospitality scholarships

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – Gulf Coast State College (GCSC) launches two new scholarships through its Hilton Hospitality Management and Tourism Program. GCSC officials said the college plans to use these scholarships to ease students' journeys into one of the most people-centered industries: hospitality. 'Hospitality is a huge industry with local and global potential. We want to help more students see it as a real career option, and give them the support to get started,' Katherine Griffin Boatwright Endowed Chair for Hospitality Management & Tourism at GCSC, Paul Bonnette, said. Students can qualify in two ways. The Hospitality Rockstars Scholarship is for high school graduates pursuing a degree in hospitality, and the Hospitality Heroes Scholarship is for current hospitality workers or GCSC students building on their experience. Each scholarship offers $500 per semester, gifted from Ms. Julie Hilton and the Hilton family, to help with tuition costs. They require six credit hours a semester for eligibility. These awards can be used alongside other financial aid, such as the Gulf Coast Guarantee and other scholarships. Click here to learn more. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. REAL ID enforcement begins, travelers without are still allowed to fly

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The REAL ID enforcement deadline is officially here. Beginning Wednesday, TSA is looking for the star at the top of the driver's licenses of domestic flight passengers. The initiative has been in the works for about two decades. It serves as a higher standard of identification for security reasons. 'That was a result of what was identified during 911, that there were some ways to validate identities. So what they've done is delayed this project for several years, probably six or seven times,' ECP Executive Director Parker McClellan said. But even if you're not REAL ID-ready, you'll still be allowed to fly. Other forms of identification are accepted, or passengers may just have an extra step when going through security. 'They have procedures in place to make sure that we still have a smooth operation. But there will be potentially some additional screening if you don't have a REAL ID. Compliant I.D.,' McClellan said. You might already have a REALID without realizing it. Many states have been issuing REAL ID-compliant cards for years. 'More than 81% of the country is compliant, and in Florida, it's 90%. So, it's the visitors that we have concerns about,' McClellan said. However, there were no security delays at Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport on the first day of REAL ID. There were minimal delays at airports nationwide. While Wednesday marked the enforcement deadline, there is still time to get a real ID. Just visit the DMV in person to apply. Here's the full list of other acceptable forms of identification or more information on how to apply for a real ID: U.S. passport or U.S. passport card Cards from Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler programs U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to military dependents Permanent resident card Border crossing card Photo ID issued by a federally recognized tribal nation or Native American tribe Federal employee or contractor ID card Passport issued by a foreign government Canadian provincial driver's license or ID card issued to Indigenous people in Canada Transportation worker identification credential U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services employment authorization card U.S. merchant mariner credential Veteran health identification card Florida REAL ID requirements.
