Davide Ancelotti faces Rangers next manager mad dash as Brazil masterplan sparks hectic summer schedule

Daily Record19-05-2025

Rangers next manager candidate Davide Ancelotti IS expected to link up with dad Carlo at Brazil amid conflicting reports over his future.
However, the Real Madrid coach is expected to confirm a quick-fire exit from the international set-up after just two games.
Ancelotti Jr has long admired by the 49ers Enterprises and incoming Ibrox sporting director Kevin Thelwell as the search for Philippe Clement's permanent successor ramps up - and is understood to be on the shortlist of candidates.
But the Scottish Premiership giants face a whirlwind summer if they opt to go with Ancelotti.
The Athletic have revealed that Ancelotti Sr and Jr will stick together with Le Selecao - but only for two pre-agreed games against Paraguay and Ecuador.
Reports last week had suggested that the trusted lieutenant would stick with his dad as a key member of the backroom team on the road to their place in USA, Canada and Mexico.
Davide is now "expected to leave after the two World Cup qualifiers" - with the second clash against Paraguay taking place in the of morning on June 11 at 1.45am UK time.
Francesco Mauri - currently technical assistant with the La Liga heavyweights - is also expected to follow Ancelotti Jr to his next club despite previous suggestions he would remain within the Brazil set-up.
If he gets the nod, it would leave Ancelotti with just 11 days to become accustomed to the Ibrox environment - should he land in Glasgow 12 hours after the full-time whistle against Paraguay.
Nicolas Raskin revealed the Ibrox men are due to report back on June 23 for pre-season.
Rangers will enter the Champions League at the second round stage just a month later - with the first leg scheduled for July 22/23.
Clubs who reach the elite competition are handed £15.7million just for competing the league phase by UEFA - but the prize pot is expected to surge to at least £40million per club.
With a host of incoming and outgoing players expected when the US consortium take control at Ibrox a hasty turnaround could be on the cards following the end of the Premiership campaign last Saturday.

Mac Allister tells Liverpool to sign Tottenham star he rates above Van Dijk

Liverpool are embarking on what is shaping up to be a busy summer transfer window and star midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has now sent a transfer wish to Reds manager Arne Slot Alexis Mac Allister has urged Liverpool to sign Tottenham's Cristian Romero. Mac Allister is currently away on international duty with Argentina, with Romero one of his team-mates with La Albiceleste. Together, the duo have helped their country win two successive Copa Americas and the 2022 World Cup. Mac Allister has also starred in Liverpool's Premier League title win, while Romero helped Tottenham to lift the Europa League. ‌ That ended a 17-year trophy drought for Spurs, who are set to undergo major changes this summer. The man who led them to winning the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou, has been sacked. ‌ Brentford boss Thomas Frank is expected to replace the Australian. Meanwhile, Liverpool are also embarking on a busy summer window, with Arne Slot keen to ensure his side retain their place at the top of English football. They have already been active in the transfer market, with Jeremie Frimpong having arrived while Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez are expected to join him. And Mac Allister has now urged a fourth move, singling out Romero. In an eyebrow-raising endorsement, Mac Allister also revealed that he rates the 27-year-old as being the best defender in the world. Such a rating would place him higher than Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. Mac Allister said after Argentina's draw with Colombia on Tuesday night: 'Oh, Cuti [Romero]. He's a player I love. The way he speaks and plays. "Sometimes you feel like he's too much because he makes everything so easy. He gives me confidence. For me, he's been the best centre-back in the world for several years.' ‌ Aside from winning the Europa League, it was a miserable season for Spurs, who finished 17th in the Premier League table. That led to suggestions that Romero could move on in the summer window. But after lifting the Europa League trophy, booking their place in next season's Champions League, Romero appeared to hint that he is happy with life in the capital city. In a post on social media, he wrote: 'We achieved what we wanted this season as a group, and that's what matters. And….My name is part of the history of this beautiful club. ‌ 'I want to thank you all for the love and support every day despite everything, but I have no doubt that staying together led us to success. We must continue, this is the path. "We are the champions of Europe. As a family from start to finish, we deserved this title. No one trusted us and here we are, closing a great season. Thank you all for the love."

Steven Naismith opens heart on controversial Rangers exit and ‘shady' situation of being told ‘sign this and move on'

STEVEN NAISMITH has opened his heart on his controversial exit from Rangers back in 2012 - claiming that things went on that just "weren't right". Naismith was one of a number of high profile Ibrox stars who exercised their right to leave the club as a free agent amid the club's financial meltdown. 4 Rangers' Steven Naismith gestures to Celtic fans as he celebrates Credit: Reuters 4 Naismith with Steven Whittaker as they refused to tupe their contracts over Credit: Keith Campbell - The Sun Glasgow Top earners such as Naismith, Steven Davis, Allan McGregor, Lee McCulloch and Steven Whittaker all agreed to take swingeing 75% pay cuts to help others keep their jobs. While McCulloch stayed at the club through the journey, the likes of Davis and McGregor have all since returned and helped clinch a top division title at Ibrox. But a number of Gers fans have never forgiven Naismith, who sat alongside Steven Whittaker as he referred to newco Rangers as "Sevco" at a press conference and said the club wasn't the same one he had supported since childhood. In an in-depth interview for the 4 Lads Had a Dream Podcast, Naismith admitted with hindsight that the press conference hr gave was "wrong" - but explained why he didn't feel he could trust those above him at the club. The former Scotland star and Hearts boss has been linked with a return to the club under new head coach Russell Martin, who he played alongside for both club and country. He said: "So many things went on that were, with the little you know about business, NOT really businesslike. "In a room, 'just sign this and move on'. That kind of shady kind of way. "Which I must say that the senior players started to question. "Whether it was Jig, Greegsy, myself, Davo, Whitts, we started to ask a few more questions. "How can this be part of the plan? 'Just quickly do it now and don't let anyone see it', that kind of stuff, which was all very uncomfortable. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers "From the administration point on, how it was dealt with, wasn't normal, wasn't right, didn't feel right. "Loads of pressure was put on players from administrators, the board, people above. This isn't normal. We are just footballers here. "This was the hardest thing I've ever done in football because life was great for me, six months earlier. "You are in the prime of your career to then go to the point that you are in the bottom division and you are going to lose the prime years of your career. "When the people came into the club it was 'we need you to sign this'. 'Trust us we are going to do this and this'. "But it got to the point where so many things had happened I really CAN'T trust these people. "In hindsight every one of those people who went into that club thought 'this is a great chance to make a fortune'. "And ultimately they probably did." 4 Naismith went on to excel at Everton Credit: Getty Images - Getty Asked specifically if he regretted the press conference, Naismith said: "Looking back on it, 100%. It was wrong. What leads you to do it is the six months before. The amount of times I looked at a paper and I was the problem. "It was constantly pressuring us to suit their narrative and suit their needs, it was relentless. "Saying, see if you don't sign, we are going to tell everybody they are done and only keep Greegsy, myself, Whitty, Davo, that was the four assets at the club. "They were saying we are going to keep you and bin everybody. Everybody is going to get released. "Staff are going to get made redundant and lose their jobs. 4 "You feel as if 'I am being made out to be the bad guy all the time'. At that point you feel you need to speak up here and say 'this isn't us'. "We've taken a pay cut, we've managed to secure nobody losing their jobs. "We want the best for the club and that is what leads you to get to this point. "But in hindsight it [the press conference] was the wrong thing to do. "It is sad that you have so many good memories, some of the best memories of your career, and the success with winning trophies and it's tainted by the way it ended." Emi Martinez's wife issues update on Villa star amid Man Utd transfer links

Emi Martinez appeared to be saying goodbye to Aston Villa fans at the end of their last match of the season amid summer transfer links, but his wife has a different version of the story Emi Martinez's wife has denied that her husband has said farewell to Aston Villa. A visibly emotional Martinez was seen waving to supporters following Villa's final home game of the 2024/25 campaign against Tottenham on May 16, prompting speculation he could leave this summer. The Argentina international has a contract at Villa until 2029, but their failure to qualify for the Champions League could prompt him to go elsewhere. There have been reports about Villa's concerns with complying with the Premier League 's profit and sustainability rules, suggesting the club might need to cash in on their top players. ‌ Martinez has been linked with a move to Manchester United, who first made contact in January amid worries over Andre Onana. Villa were then said to be keeping an eye on Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia as a potential replacement for Martinez. ‌ But his wife Mandinha has dismissed the speculation, telling BBC WM: "He wasn't in tears. No. Anybody who knows Emi knows he is an emotional character and that's who he is. It just shows you how much he loves the Villa fans. I love the Villa fans. We love Villa." Her words may reassure Villa supporters somewhat, but Martinez himself has been a lot less committed in public. SSpeaking to reporters after reporting for international duty recently, he said: "My future? I don't know, I come here to play for the national team, and that's the only thing that matters to me right now. "Do I want to move to a new club? The transfer window just opened, so there's still a long way to go." Meanwhile, Villa boss Unai Emery has also hinted that Martinez will be on his way this summer. Speaking before the final game of the season against United on May 25 – in which Martinez was sent off – he said: "We will see. Of course, it is the last match here [this season], and I don't know. 'We will see about the team, the players, but of course, they are responding on the field. Of course, then we will see about everything, how we are going to try to get better for the next season." ‌ HAVE YOUR SAY! Would you like to see Emi Martinez at your club this summer? Comment below. Martinez also has strong links with Arsenal, having spent much of his career on the books in north London. He has previously suggested he still loves Arsenal and praised Mikel Arteta. "I think it was 10-11 years I was here," Martinez told Sky Sports. ‌ "I've still got friends here. I came here as a lad and left a man. I'll always love this club. "They are still second, they've come far and have one of the best managers in the world. I've worked with Mikel [Arteta]. I know how good he is."
