Kolhapur bus rams into height barrier at Pardi underpass

Nagpur: A private intercity bus with a Kolhapur registration number rammed into the height barrier of a Road Under Bridge (RuB) at Bhandara Road in Pardi on Tuesday, damaging the upper portion of the bus.
The incident, captured by locals in videos and photos, showed the bus attempting to squeeze through the underpass despite clear height restrictions. The metal barrier at the entrance, installed to prevent oversized vehicles from entering the low-clearance stretch, held firm, but the bus's roof was visibly crumpled after the impact.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the barrier itself remained undamaged.
However, the incident once again highlighted the recurring issue of heavy vehicles disregarding signage at low-height underpasses, particularly on routes used by intercity transport operators.
Officials from both Lakadganj and Pardi traffic zones told TOI that no formal report of the incident was filed.
"Neither the control room received any alert, nor did the beat marshals on duty witness anything at the time," said inspector Sunda Deshmukh.

It is suspected that the bus driver fled the scene after the accident, possibly to avoid penalties or vehicle detention.
Local commuters who frequent the stretch recorded the incident, and videos of the bus reversing itself outside the underpass are doing rounds on social media. Despite the lack of an official report, traffic authorities are expected to review CCTV footage from nearby junctions to identify the vehicle and take necessary action.

Woman's murder in Illinois: Judge sets Mexican illegal free; ICE arrests him back
Representative Image (AI-generated) A Mexican national accused of decapitating a missing Illinois woman and hiding her body in a bleach-filled container was re-arrested by US immigration authorities on Saturday (local time) in Chicago, months after he was released from custody despite facing serious charges. Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, a 52-year-old resident of Waukegan, Illinois, was first arrested in April after police discovered the body of 37-year-old Megan Bos in a container in his backyard. He was charged with concealing a corpse, abusing a corpse and obstruction of justice, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). However, shortly after his first court appearance, Lake County Judge Randie Bruno released Mendoza-Gonzalez under the provisions of Illinois' Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act. The decision drew sharp criticism from public officials who questioned the release of someone accused of such a heinous crime. On Saturday, Mendoza-Gonzalez was taken back into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a market in Chicago. He now remains in ICE detention, DHS confirmed. The body of Megan Bos, who had been reported missing on March 9, was found in April. According to her family, she was last seen in February. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? How to get Internet without paying a subscription? Techno Mag Learn More Undo Investigators allege that Mendoza-Gonzalez kept Bos's body in his basement for two days before moving it to the yard, where it remained concealed for nearly two months. DHS officials said that Bos had been decapitated and her remains were found inside a container filled with bleach. "It is absolutely repulsive this monster walked free on Illinois' streets after allegedly committing such a heinous crime," a DHS spokesperson said. "Megan Bos and her family will have justice," as reported by Fox News. After Mendoza-Gonzalez's release in April, Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner criticized the laws that allowed the suspect's release. "I was shocked to find out literally the next day that the person that they had arrested for this had been released from prison under the SAFE-T Act less than, detained less, I think, than 48 hours," Gartner said. Gartner emphasized that there are several other serious factors in this case, including the nature of the crime, how long it was hidden, and the fact that the suspect is not a US citizen and could potentially flee the country. Mendoza-Gonzalez reportedly told authorities that Bos had overdosed at his home. Instead of calling 911, he allegedly broke her phone and kept her body in the basement for two days before moving it outside. Republican State Representative Tom Weber also expressed his concern about Mendoza-Gonzalez's release in April. "Someone that hid their body in a garbage can for 51 days after leaving it in the basement for two days, after not calling 911 [and] breaking a phone. Is this a non-detainable offense?" Weber said. "Should we not find out, wait for a toxicology report, anything?"

Ex-NIA judge moves Delhi High Court seeking arms licence for personal security
New Delhi: A former special judge of National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently approached Delhi High Court seeking directions to central govt and Delhi Police to issue him an arms licence. In his plea, the judge cited personal security concerns. Hearing the plea, Justice Sachin Dutta recorded an assurance by the govt counsel that a decision on the judge's pending application would be taken within four weeks. "The above redresses the immediate grievance of the petitioner. Accordingly, the present petition is disposed of in the above terms. The pending application also stands disposed of," the court stated. Justice Dutta, however, noted that if the petitioner judge was not satisfied with the decision taken by the authorities, he could seek legal remedies. In the petition filed through advocate Sadiya Rohma Khan, the judge submitted that he served as a special NIA judge in Tripura and was currently on deputation in Delhi. According to the petition, the judge was called by the police licensing authorities for a personal assessment last year, and he appeared for the same. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo However, there was no development after the assessment. "It is shocking that the petitioner and his family are living with no security in New Delhi, and this potentialises both direct and indirect threats to their personal safety and security," the plea argued. Since his family is permanently stationed in Delhi, he applied for an arms licence to ensure protection and safety so that he is free from any "external criminal threats and potential risks and non-interference in free movement and is able to defend himself if a threat arises", the counsel submitted. Invoking Article 21 of the Constitution, the petitioner argued that forcing his family to live without any security amounted to a violation of their right to life and personal liberty.
