KUWAIT CITY, July 31: The Meteorological Department has forecast a sweltering weekend ahead for Kuwait, with daytime temperatures expected to reach up to 50 degrees Celsius and warm to hot conditions persisting at night.
According to Dharar Al-Ali, Director of the Meteorology Department, the country is currently under the influence of an extension of the Indian monsoon depression. This system is accompanied by a very hot air mass and northwesterly to variable winds that are expected to be light to moderate in strength but may become active at times, particularly in open areas, stirring up dust and leading to the appearance of scattered clouds.
On Thursday, the weather is forecast to be very hot with northwesterly winds ranging between 15 and 45 kilometers per hour, occasionally causing dust storms in exposed areas. Daytime temperatures are expected to peak between 48°C and 50°C. Sea conditions will be light to moderate, with wave heights reaching between 2 and 6 feet.
During the night, the weather will remain hot to warm with light to moderate northwesterly winds blowing at speeds of 12 to 35 km/h. The temperature is expected to dip only slightly, with lows between 33°C and 35°C. The sea will remain light to moderate with waves between 2 and 4 feet.
Friday's forecast predicts another very hot day, with northwesterly winds ranging from 12 to 38 km/h. Maximum temperatures will hover between 47°C and 49°C. Sea conditions will remain light to moderate with waves between 1 and 4 feet.
The night will see continued hot to warm weather, with some scattered clouds expected. Winds will be northwesterly, light to moderate, ranging from 12 to 32 km/h, while minimum temperatures will range between 32°C and 34°C. The sea will again be light to moderate, with waves between 2 and 4 feet.
On Saturday, very hot weather will persist, with northwesterly to variable winds between 10 and 38 km/h. Scattered clouds may appear throughout the day, and high temperatures will again range from 48°C to 50°C. The sea will be light to moderate, with wave heights from 2 to 4 feet.
Saturday night will bring hot to warm conditions and relatively high humidity in coastal areas. Winds will be variable to northwesterly, light to moderate, at speeds of 12 to 32 km/h. The night's minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 33°C and 35°C. Sea conditions will continue to be light to moderate, with waves between 1 and 4 feet.
Residents are advised to take precautions against the extreme heat, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, and stay hydrated throughout the weekend.

Spain and Portugal battle wave of wildfires

MADRID, July 31, (AP): Thousands of firefighters in Spain and Portugal on Thursday battled an ongoing wave of wildfires, some of which have been burning for days as temperatures are expected to rise in the Iberian Peninsula. In central Spain, firefighters and a special military unit worked overnight to control blazes in the province of Avila, focusing on confining a fire burning near the village of El Arenal, about 100 km (62 miles) west of Madrid, emergency services said. In the western province of Caceres, local authorities said firefighters had largely stabilized a fire that affected some 2,500 hectares (roughly 6,178 acres.) Most evacuation orders had been lifted, authorities said. In Portugal, more than 2,000 firefighters were battling blazes across the country, particularly in the north. Much of Spain and Portugal is under a high risk of wildfires and temperatures are expected to rise over the weekend. Spain's meteorology service AEMET predicted that temperatures in central and southern Spain could exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) by Sunday. In Portugal, temperatures are expected to rise Saturday into the upper 30s Celsius across most of the country. Despite record-high temperatures in June that topped 40 degrees Celsius on several days, wildfires in Spain this year have so far burned less surface area than in recent years. Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing at twice the speed as the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service. Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, especially in southeastern Europe, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires. The burning of fuels like gasoline, oil and coal, plus deforestation, wildfires and many kinds of factories release heat-trapping gasses that cause climate change.
