Who is Oscar Ustari? Meet Inter Miami's unsung Argentine hero of the Club World Cup

Time of India15-06-2025
On a night when all eyes were on
Lionel Messi
, it was another Argentine who emerged as the unexpected hero for
Inter Miami
. Veteran goalkeeper
Oscar Ustari
stole the spotlight in the
Club World Cup
opener against Egypt's Al Ahly, delivering a match-winning performance that kept Miami alive in Group A.
The 38-year-old made a staggering eight saves, including a crucial penalty stop and a point-blank header denial, as the game ended 0–0. Ustari's remarkable reflexes, especially against Trezeguet's penalty rebound, ensured Inter Miami walked away with a hard-earned point. 'The team did a great job defensively, and that's what I most care about,' Ustari humbly said post-match.
Ustari's journey back to a world stage is nothing short of cinematic. Once Messi's teammate on Argentina's victorious 2005 U-20 World Cup squad, Ustari's career has taken him across Spain, England, Mexico, and South America. Most recently, he captained Pachuca to a Liga MX title before joining Inter Miami as a free agent in 2024. He has since made over 20 appearances, including in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

His experience and leadership were on full display against Al Ahly. Inter forward Luis Suárez summed it up best: 'We didn't think their keeper would make so many saves. He was the key player.'
Before arriving in Miami, Ustari also played for clubs like Independiente, Getafe, Boca Juniors, and Sunderland. In Mexico, he enjoyed a successful spell with Pachuca, winning the 2022 Apertura and wearing the captain's armband. He briefly joined Chilean side Audax Italiano before making the switch to MLS.
Live Events
Internationally, Ustari was a part of Argentina's 2006 World Cup squad (as an unused player), earned his first senior cap in 2007, and helped win gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His international career was unfortunately disrupted by a foot injury in the Olympic quarterfinals.
Now, nearly two decades since he was heralded as one of Argentina's brightest young keepers, Ustari is writing a new chapter — one where he shines on the global stage once again. And this time, not in Messi's shadow, but right beside him.

Bangladesh, Kazakhstan to be part of Asia Cup in place of Pakistan & Oman

With just 10 days to go for the first match, Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) finally announced the schedule for the men's Asia Cup hockey tournament. Pakistan, however, will not be part of it, having been replaced by Bangladesh in the eight-team tournament that will be held from Aug 29 to Sept 7 at Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar. Oman also pulled out of the tournament at the last moment, with Kazakhstan taking their place. The remaining five teams taking part in the event besides hosts India are Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and South Korea. While India have been clubbed with Japan, China and Kazakhstan in Pool A, Pool B consists of Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh and Chinese Taipei. After the pool stage, where the teams will play each other once, the top two teams from each pool will play in the Super4s. Once again it will be played in a round-robin format with the top two teams making it to the final. The winner will be awarded a spot in the FIH World Cup to be held next year in the Netherlands and Belgium. As far as the fixtures are concerned, Malaysia will play the tournament opener against Bangladesh, while India will hope to make a winning start when they take on China. Being the No. 1 side in Asia, Craig Fulton's men will undoubtedly come into the tournament as strong favourites. But hockey fans will certainly feel the absence of Pakistan. Their participation was always doubtful following the Pahalgam incident. However, the Indian govt had said it would provide visas to the players and even Hockey India was confident of their participation. But Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) refused to travel citing security concerns. AHF president Fumio Ogura, meanwhile, said in a statement, "The Asia Cup will bring together the very best of Asian hockey. With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition, inspire millions of fans, and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Asia." Korea continue to be the most successful side in the tournament, having won the title five times in the past. As for India, they finished third in the last edition in Jakarta but it does seem they will finish on top this time around.
