The Los Angeles Lakers could soon lock down their new star player, but the contract might not be what most fans expect. With Luka Doncic now eligible for a huge extension, many are watching to see what kind of deal he signs.
Reports suggest the All-Star might have a smarter long-term plan in mind, one that could change how big NBA stars approach their future deals.
Luka Doncic may take shorter deal with Los Angeles Lakers to aim for massive 2028 payday
On July 8, NBA insider John Hollinger from The Athletic reported that Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic may sign a shorter extension instead of a full four-year deal this summer. Doncic, who was traded to the Lakers earlier this year, becomes eligible for a four-year, $223 million extension on August 2, 2025.

However, because he was traded, Luka cannot sign for a full supermax contract yet. Hollinger noted that it is 'vastly more likely' Doncic will sign a three-year, $161 million deal that includes a player option in the final year. This move would position Doncic to hit 10-year veteran status in summer 2028, making him eligible for a projected five-year, $406 million contract under the 35% max rule.
According to Hollinger, 'If he were to void his player option in 2026 and sign a three-year deal with a 2028-29 player option, he could line himself up for the biggest payday of his career.'

Los Angeles Lakers prefer long-term deal but will accept any contract to keep Luka Doncic on the roster
Luka Doncic is only 26 years old and has a $48.9 million player option for the 2026-27 NBA season. That means Doncic could walk away as a free agent in the summer of 2026 if nothing is signed before then. But people around the league think the Lakers won't let that happen. They're expected to make sure he stays with them through at least 2028.
Even if they don't get the full four-year commitment, the Lakers are reportedly happy to keep Doncic from entering free agency next year.
The Lakers know how important it is to keep Luka Doncic feeling good about his future. They also know that being flexible with money now might help later. Even if Luka signs a shorter deal, they believe it's worth it.
He is one of the best players in the league. Having him in Los Angeles on any kind of deal is a big win. People close to the team say they understand Luka's plan. And they're okay with it, as long as he stays in purple and gold.

NBA Trade Rumors: Could Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo Team Up With $215,159,700 Atlanta Hawks to Improve Title Odds?

Giannis Antetokounmpo (Image via USA Today) In a bold trade proposal that has the potential to shake up the NBA landscape, the Atlanta Hawks have been linked to a blockbuster deal that would land them two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks . The trade idea, first floated by Connor Thoms of Bleacher Report, suggests Atlanta could be an unexpected suitor for the Greek Freak, especially in a rapidly changing Eastern Conference. Proposed Trade Breakdown Here's how the trade would look according to Thoms' hypothetical scenario: Atlanta Hawks Receive Milwaukee Bucks Receive Giannis Antetokounmpo Jalen Johnson Zaccharie Risacher Kobe Bufkin Four first-round picks One pick swap This package gives Milwaukee a mix of promising young players and future draft capital, while Atlanta forms a formidable 'Big 3' with Antetokounmpo joining All-Stars Trae Young and Kristaps Porzingis. Eastern Conference Shake-Up Giannis Antetokounmpo (Image via Trevor Ruszkowski, Imagn Images) If executed, this deal would dramatically alter the balance of power in the East. With Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton and Boston's Jayson Tatum both expected to miss the upcoming season due to injuries, the door is open for a new contender to rise. Pairing Giannis with Trae and Porzingis offers Atlanta a lethal combination of speed, size, and shot-making that could push them deep into the playoffs. Antetokounmpo's Uncertain Future According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly 'open-minded' about leaving Milwaukee for the first time in his career. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ready for a Glow-Up? (Book Today) Undo That openness comes after the Bucks' disappointing first-round exit at the hands of the Indiana Pacers, who dispatched them in five games. Ashish Mathur, who reported on the trade idea for NBA Analysis Network, emphasized the weight of such a move: 'It will be intriguing to see if Antetokounmpo stays with Milwaukee or requests a trade.' Giannis has been loyal to Milwaukee since being selected 15th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. Over his 12 seasons with the Bucks, he's helped transform the franchise into a perennial playoff team and led them to an NBA title in 2021. Bucks' Recent Moves Signal Change Since their playoff exit, the Bucks have been active in retooling their roster: - Waived and stretched Damian Lillard - Signed Myles Turner and Gary Harris - Re-signed Bobby Portis, Kevin Porter Jr., Gary Trent Jr., Taurean Prince, and Jericho Sims Despite these moves, Milwaukee doesn't currently look like a true title contender, prompting growing speculation that a Giannis trade may become a reality. Giannis Antetokounmpo by the Numbers The Greek Freak remains one of the league's most dominant forces. Last season, he earned All-NBA First Team honors while posting monster stats: Stat Category 2024-2025 Season Average Points 30.4 Rebounds 11.9 Assists 6.5 Steals 0.9 Blocks 1.2 He's also locked into a lucrative three-year, $175 million extension signed in 2023, with a salary of $54.1 million for the upcoming season. A Hall of Fame Trajectory Already etched in NBA history, Antetokounmpo's resume includes: - 2× MVP - 1× NBA Finals MVP - 1× Defensive Player of the Year - 9× All-Star - 2021 NBA Champion With career averages of 23.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game, Giannis is all but guaranteed to be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. While this trade remains hypothetical, it underlines a major question heading into the 2025-26 season: will Giannis remain loyal to Milwaukee, or is it finally time for a new chapter? Bill Simmons Loses It in 6-Word Reaction as Celtics Icon Marcus Smart Signs Two-Year Deal with the Los Angeles Lakers

Bill Simmons reacts in crisis after Marcus Smart joins Lakers (Image via Getty) Marcus Smart , the former Boston Celtics heart-and-soul defender, is set to join the Los Angeles Lakers after securing a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards. Shams Charania broke the news, reporting that Smart intends to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers once he clears waivers. The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to make roster cuts in order to free up the necessary salary space for Smart's arrival. The 31-year-old guard spent last season split between the Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards, but it's the purple and gold that will now provide the veteran with a fresh start. A Devastating Blow for Celtics Loyalists The announcement sent shockwaves through the NBA community—none more so than within Boston Celtics fandom. Marcus Smart was more than just a player in Boston. Drafted by the Celtics in 2014, he became a tenacious defensive anchor, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors and leading with unmatched grit. His departure in 2023, part of the trade that brought Kristaps Porziņģis to Boston, already stung. Seeing him in a Lakers jersey? That's a whole new level of pain. Bill Simmons, lifelong Celtics fan and prominent NBA commentator, couldn't contain his emotions. Upon seeing Charania's mock-up of Smart in Los Angeles Lakers gear, Bill Simmons took to X in meltdown mode: 'Ahhhhhhh I've gone blind! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!' It was the digital equivalent of a Celtics funeral. Bill Simmons' Worst Fear Comes True Bill Simmons' reaction isn't just about Smart. He had previously voiced concern over the possibility of Al Horford—another Boston veteran—following a similar path to the Los Angeles Lakers . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo While Horford's future remains uncertain, ESPN's Brian Windhorst recently linked the big man to the Golden State Warriors instead. For now, at least, Bill Simmons can breathe a partial sigh of relief—though Marcus Smart's move is already enough to send him into a crisis. Marcus Smart's Legacy in Boston During his nine years with the Celtics, Smart was a symbol of Boston's hard-nosed identity. He helped the team rise from a rebuilding phase to Finals contenders, playing a vital role in their 2022 run to the championship series—where they fell short to the Warriors. Despite being traded ahead of the Celtics' 2024 title win, Smart's contributions were not forgotten. He laid the foundation for a locker room culture that eventually paid off, even if he wasn't there to lift the trophy with them. What This Means for the Los Angeles Lakers Marcus Smart now joins a Los Angeles Lakers squad desperate to rebound from a disappointing postseason. His defensive intensity, leadership, and veteran presence could be just what Los Angeles needs to add edge to a roster still trying to gel around its core. Whether he starts or becomes a key rotation piece, Smart brings playoff-tested experience and a chip-on-the-shoulder mentality—qualities that might just ignite a deeper postseason run. From Celtics green to Los Angeles Lakers gold, Marcus Smart's journey is bound to polarize NBA fans—especially those in Boston. But for the Lakers, it's a strategic gamble on a player who still has plenty to offer.
