Pictures reveal inside of sunken Bayesian superyacht after it was resurfaced for full examination

Sky News29-06-2025
The inside of the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily almost a year ago has been seen for the first time after it was resurfaced.
British billionaire Mike Lynch, 59, his daughter Hannah, 18, and five others died after the 56-metre (184ft) Bayesian sank off Porticello on 19 August 2024.
Images reveal what the inside of the British-flagged vessel looks like now - after it was resurfaced and placed in a manufactured steel cradle in Termini Imerese.
In one picture, a lounge area can be seen, complete with sofas and other furniture, while another shows the hatch down to the lower deck.
Now the boat is back on land, a balloon-like instrument will be used to lift its 72m (236ft) mast after it was cut off with a remote-controlled tool to rest on the seabed.
While salvage workers continue a "full sweep" of the ocean floor nearby, a full examination of the yacht will look at what could have been done to prevent the tragedy.
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) will then publish a report into its investigation.
The family of the Bayesian chef Recaldo Thomas, who was among those who died, says "lessons need to be learned".
In a statement through the Thomas family lawyers Keystone Law, they said they want the investigation to "establish the truth of what happened" and "bring those responsible to justice".

Simon Graves, an MAIB investigator, said of the investigation previously: "When the wreck is brought ashore, we'll be completing a full examination of the wreck and we'll be finding out all of the elements that might have contributed to the safety of the vessel."
Things like the vessel's "escape routes" will be included in the final report, Mr Graves added.
"Once we get access to the vessel we'll be able to tell a fuller picture of activities on board and the sequence of events."
A UK inquest will look at the deaths of Mr Lynch, Miss Lynch, Morgan Stanley banker Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife Judy, 71, who were all British nationals.
US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda also died.

Matthew Stafford's wife Kelly talks podcast co-host's absence after male masseuse's sexual misconduct claims

Kelly Stafford has finally addressed the noticeable absence of her podcast co-host and 'bestie' Hank Winchester, a Detroit TV reporter accused of making 'unwanted sexual advances' towards an unidentified male masseuse. 'I know that TMA has looked a little differently over the last few weeks,' Kelly, the wife of LA Rams quarterback and former Detroit Lions star Matthew Stafford, said on Friday's episode of ' The Morning After. ' The 36-year-old mother of four stopped short of spelling out the allegations against Winchester, who remains on leave at Detroit's WDIV amid an external investigation into his behavior. Matthew has made several appearances on the show in Winchester's absence. 'Summer is a lot for all of us,' she said, as quoted by Us Weekly. 'I've been traveling a bunch. Hank is dealing with some personal stuff. Bear with us there. 'The NFL season is just around the corner,' she continued. 'Soon you will be getting plenty of us, I'm sure. It's all a lot.' Whether or not Stafford was alluding to Winchester's return is unclear. His attorney denied the allegations of misconduct last month, saying Winchester was facing 'false accusations.' No charges have been filed in the case. The circumstances of the allegations remain somewhat unclear. Sources told Fox 2 in Detroit that the consumer investigative reporter has been studying massage therapy. Police and sheriff's deputies raided his $560,000 home in the Detroit suburbs on June 13, seizing electronics from the three-bedroom, three-bath home. A spokesperson for the Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed to The Detroit Free Press that officers helped local police execute the search warrant. WDIV Vice President and General Manager Bob Ellis issued a brief statement Wednesday confirming the investigation. 'We here at Local 4 have been made aware of an external investigation regarding Hank Winchester,' Ellis said. 'As of this time, he has been placed on administrative leave. While the investigation is ongoing - we won't make any further comments.' The Emmy-award winning reporter's attorney Todd Flood, however, dismissed the allegations, telling Daily Mail how the 'investigation will end where it began - nowhere.' 'Hank has spent decades bringing truth to our community and fighting for our citizens. Because he holds a high-profile position in our community, that can at times generate false accusations,' Flood said in a statement Wednesday. Winchester has worked at WDIV since 2001, serving as both a reporter and anchor, his station biography states. He is currently the head of the outlet's Help Me Hank Consumer Unit, which reveals recalls, works to solve consumer complaints, and tracks down thieves in the community. The reporter appears to be heavily involved in his local community, having worked with the Detroit Pistons to build a school library and gymnasium at the city's Thurgood Marshall Elementary School. The Michigan native is a graduate of Central Michigan University and worked at TV stations across the state, as well as in Miami, before joining WDIV's staff. He is also a proud father, often talking about family affairs and raising his young daughter Emma on his podcast The Morning After. His co-host Kelly, a registered nurse, shares four children with her Super Bowl-winning husband, who is also one of Winchester's longtime friends. However, the show's description claims Kelly's 'bestie' is Winchester. 'Her husband is a Super Bowl winning QB, his daughter is obsessed with dinosaurs,' reads the show bio. 'Kelly Stafford and bestie Hank Winchester know a thing or two about pressure, the spotlight, and keeping it all together for their kiddos.

Ex-Epstein lawyer calls for release of additional Epstein materials

WASHINGTON, July 20 (Reuters) - One of Jeffrey Epstein's former attorneys on Sunday called on the U.S. Justice Department to release additional investigative records from its sex-trafficking investigation, and urged the government to grant Epstein's former girlfriend immunity so that she can testify about his crimes. In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Alan Dershowitz said the grand jury transcripts that Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday asked a federal judge to unseal would not contain the types of information being sought by President Donald Trump's supporters, such as the names of Epstein's clientele. "I think the judge should release it, but they are not in the grand jury transcripts," Dershowitz said on Fox. "I've seen some of these materials. For example, there is an FBI report of interviews with alleged victims in which at least one of the victims names very important people," he said, adding that those names have been redacted. President Donald Trump has been under mounting pressure from his supporters to release additional information related to the government's sex-trafficking probe into Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019 while awaiting trial. Earlier this year, Bondi promised that the department would release additional materials including "a lot of names" and "a lot of flight logs." The department back-tracked on that promise earlier this month, after releasing a joint memo, opens new tab with the FBI which poured cold water on long-running conspiracy theories about Epstein by saying there was "no incriminating client list" or any evidence of blackmail. The memo also backed a prior FBI investigation which concluded that Epstein died by suicide and was not murdered in his jail cell. Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel have faced a growing backlash by Trump's supporters since the memo was issued, prompting Trump last week to order the department to ask a court to unseal grand jury transcripts from the Epstein case. The U.S. government on Friday filed a motion in a Manhattan federal court to unseal grand jury transcripts in the cases of Epstein and former associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 of five federal charges related to her role in Epstein's sexual abuse of underage girls. Maxwell is appealing her conviction and 20-year prison sentence to the U.S. Supreme Court. The release of the grand jury documents may fall short of what many of Trump's supporters have sought, including case files held by the administration, and a judge may reject the administration's request to make the transcripts public. Dershowitz on Sunday told "Fox News Sunday" that the information that Bondi did not request to be unsealed would be "far more informative and far more relevant." He added that the government should also grant Maxwell immunity so that she could testify before Congress about what knowledge she has of Epstein's alleged crimes. "She knows everything. She is the Rosetta Stone," he said of Maxwell. "If she were just given use immunity, she could be compelled to testify."

England to stop taking the knee over racist abuse

The Lionesses will not take the knee before their Euro 2025 semi-final with Italy on Tuesday after the squad condemned the abhorrent racist abuse suffered by Jess Carter. The defender shared on Instagram that she had been targeted by racist comments online since the start of the tournament. England's players have taken the knee before each of their four games so far but have decided they will remain standing before kick-off on Tuesday, with the squad stating they and football need to find another way to tackle racism. The players' statement read: 'We stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism. 'No one should have to endure such vile abuse, be that in football or any walk of life. Representing our country is the greatest honour. It is not right that while we are doing that some of us are treated differently simply because of the colour of our skin. 'Until now, we have chosen to take the knee before matches. It is clear and football need to find another way to tackle racism. We have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kick-off on Tuesday. 'It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism. We have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kick-off on Tuesday. 'We hope the game can come together to see what more can be done. 'For now, we will return our total focus to an important semi-final. In the meantime, we know the FA are working with UK police and the appropriate bodies. Those behind this online poison must be held accountable.' Carter has started all four of England's matches at the Euros. She endured a difficult night in the opening game with France and in the quarter-final against Sweden but put in excellent displays against Netherlands and Wales. The defender, who plays her club football for American side Gotham FC, penned an emotional statement on social media, detailing the abuse she had received. Her post read: 'A message to the fans…From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse. 'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race. As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with. 'As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can. Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it. We have made some historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be a part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all. I'm now looking forward and focusing on putting all of my energy into helping my team. Jess Carter.' The statement was shared by England manager Sarina Wiegman while the Football Association's chief executive Mark Bullingham also condemned the abuse. 'Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs,' Bullingham said. 'We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism. 'As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice. 'Regrettably, this is not the first time this has happened to an England player, so we had measures in place to allow us to respond quickly and where possible provide information to support any potential police action. 'We will continue to discuss with the relevant authorities and social media companies about what more can and should be done to prevent this abhorrent abuse.'
