First night of the Proms review – Batiashvili's magnificent Sibelius opens the festival

This year's Proms began with a curiously uneven concert. The programme, conducted by Sakari Oramo with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, felt oddly disparate. The main works were the Sibelius Violin Concerto with Lisa Batiashvili as soloist, and Vaughan Williams's oratorio Sancta Civitas, a comparative rarity. There was new music, too, the world premiere of The Elements by Errollyn Wallen, Master of the King's Music. Oramo opened, however, with Arthur Bliss's Birthday Fanfare for Sir Henry Wood, before segueing, without pause, into Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture, the latter most beautifully done, with finely focussed strings and woodwind, but something of a jolt after Bliss's jaunty little piece for brass and timpani in honour of the Proms' founder.
Wallen's new work, meanwhile, didn't feel entirely successful. The Proms Guide argues that it explores the 'periodic table of orchestral elements' that form the basis of composition, though Wallen writes, in her own programme note, that its prime concern is 'the fundamentals of music, life and love.' It's cast in a single-three section movement, the first dark and gritty, the second poised, elegant and sounding like Ravel, the third ringing changes on music from Purcell's The Fairy Queen. But it never coheres, and the Purcell quotes just leave you longing for the original.
The Sibelius, however, was unquestionably magnificent. Oramo conducted Batiashvili's first ever performance of the concerto when she was 16, they've given it together many times together since, and you really sense the almost instinctive give and take that comes from a fine collaboration. Though technically astonishing, Batiashvili never sounded showy, and the big first movement cadenza was all about musical logic rather than display. Oramo – always wonderful in Sibelius – gave us understated drama and intensity in the first two movements, before releasing the edgy mood into the exhilaration of the finale.
Vaughan Williams's choral depiction of the Holy City as described in the Book of Revelation, meanwhile, has never struck me as the masterpiece that some claim it to be, though you couldn't fault the fervour or grandeur of Oramo's interpretation. The choral singing – from the combined forces of the BBC Symphony Chorus, BBC Singers and members of London Youth Choirs – was all fierce exaltation and rapture. Gerald Finley was the visionary baritone, Caspar Singh the excellent tenor, making much of the precious little Vaughan Williams gives him.
Watch on BBC iPlayer, or listen again on BBC Sounds until 12 October. The Proms continue until 13 September.

Lottie Moss reveals nightmare British Airways flight and exclaims she's had the 'worst experience' as she returns home from St. Tropez trip

Lottie Moss has detailed her nightmare flight after she landed in London Stansted on Saturday evening. The socialite and half-sister of Kate Moss took to her Instagram to update her followers about the mishap that happened on her way back from St. Tropez in the south of France. Supermodel Lottie, 27, tagged British Airways in her Story, where she appeared to be complaining about the airline. She explained how she was feeling worse for wear after going out five nights in a row and was still stressed as her luggage had yet to arrive on time. Wearing oversized sunglasses in her video, Lottie began: 'I cannot explain to you - please ignore my voice, I've been literally out every night for the past five nights in St Tropez - but, I've had the worst experience with British Airways today, I cannot even tell you. 'My journey starts at 8am and it's literally not even finished yet because the bags haven't arrived. The plane was four hours late.' Lottie went on to share how when the flight landed, passengers had to wait for a further 25 minutes before they were allowed off the flight. She continued: 'We landed, sat on the tarmac here for like, 25 minutes, and the bags still aren't here. It doesn't say awaiting baggage, it doesn't say baggage completed.' Visibly agitated, she added: 'I'm gonna lose my f**king mind.' Daily Mail has contacted British Airways for comment. Lottie was holidaying in the French Riviera alongside Love Island's Grace Jackson and model Roxy Horner. She was there on a brand trip for Bydee swimwear, and flashed her sensational physique in a jaw-dropping mirror selfie. The stylish bikini snaps come after it was reported earlier this month that former Only Fans creator Lottie is using her personal diaries to write a biography about her childhood and turbulent life in the spotlight. Lottie will not hold back as she reflects on her battles with alcohol and substance abuse issues, according to the Sun. It's understood that she has kept written and video diaries since she was a teenager and will be using them to reference her colourful past. An insider said: 'Lottie has always been known as Kate's little sister — but this is her chance to tell her side of the story. 'She has kept written and video diaries since she was a teenager, so will be compiling all her scribbles and memories into the book. 'Lottie is excited to tell the truth about her struggles with body image, addiction and relationships.'

TALK OF THE TOWN: Sherlock star Benedict and the mystery of the vanishing photographs

It's a mystery that would baffle Sherlock Holmes himself... just why was Benedict Cumberbatch so secretive about doing a stint as a barman for charity? The actor who played the eccentric but brilliant detective on TV, recently spent an evening mixing margaritas at Trejos Tacos, a Mexican bar on Portobello Road, Notting Hill, after he auctioned off his time for a good cause. The highest bidder put him to work in the trendy West London eatery, serving cocktails and shots of tequila to her and her friends. Insiders tell me everyone was enthralled by the attention of their celebrity mixologist, who took to the role exceptionally well. I hear he doted on his starstruck customers and shook hands with fans. But news of the actor's good deed was supposed to be kept under wraps, with a strict 'no photographs' policy in place at the restaurant, which is owned by fellow Hollywood actor Danny Trejo. Despite the ban, pictures of Benedict the Barman did emerge from the night and find their way on to Instagram. But I hear the over-excited punter responsible for the leak was given a terse telling off and the images removed. The Doctor Strange star – soon to be seen with Olivia Colman in a remake of the comedy War Of The Roses – had sold off his services at a gala dinner raising money for the London Academy Of Music and Dramatic Art, of which he is president. Perhaps, Cumberbatch, 58, did not want to be pictured with booze as he's long valued his 'near sobriety', preferring yoga to alcohol. That explanation would be elementary, my dear... Nepo babies assemble! Nico Parker, the daughter of Mission: Impossible actress Thandiwe Newton, made her name in post-apocalypse drama The Last Of Us. Now I can reveal she is dating actor Cooper Hoffman, son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. The pair have been cast in Poetic License, with Jake Bongiovi, son of singer Jon Bon Jovi. It's being made by Maude Apatow, daughter of director Judd. You're just like your ex's mamma, Mia Is Romeo Beckham's ex following in the illustrious footsteps of his fashion designer mother Victoria Beckham? Model Mia Regan has set up a company called Mr Designs Ltd, listing herself as a designer. Last week she unveiled a new collection with high street chain H&M, but the launch party for her collaboration was not, shall we say, 'Posh'. I'm told the low-key affair was hosted at a cafe next to the Woodberry Wetlands in North London, which costs up to £4,000 to hire. Jazzy has landed a film role to dye for Socialite Jazzy de Lisser recently made a dramatic change when she dyed her hair from her natural brunette to a bright blonde and now I think I know why. The 33-year-old daughter of fashion designer Serena Bute has been cast in a new film called Pretty Ugly alongside Nicola Peltz Beckham. De Lisser will play a woman obsessed with social media beauty while Peltz Beckham, 30, will play 'a provocative make-up influencer'. Their characters will face a murder and learn the real meaning of the American Dream. Expect it to be, well, pretty ugly. Make Ellen a De Generes offer... A new life in the Cotswolds has not been without its challenges for ex-US chat show host Ellen De Generes and her actress wife Portia de Rossi, as their house suffered flooding which led to them buying a second home nearby. Now their first mansion, which they bought for £15million, is up for sale – not on the open market but only to the 'right buyer should they approach'. I think the biggest draw is that the house has its own pub. What's not to love? Clangers on air Poor Woody Cook is paying the price for having a famous broadcaster for a mum – everyone gets to know about his howlers. In her new podcast, Radio 2 star Zoe Ball reveals how Woody forgot to pay his car insurance, an error that somehow resulted in bailiffs knocking on the door. Zoe also discloses Woody's nicknames for her. 'He calls me Mum and Bass, because I like drum and bass. But also, we're Mumford and Sons. I'm Mumford, he's Sons.' Sheeran's old togs Want to dress like Ed Sheeran? I'm told the pop star donates his old clothes to the East Anglia Children's Hospice shop in Framlingham, Suffolk. Ed's no style icon but if you fancy jeans, hoodies or checked shirts, you know where to go!

Staggering sum Torvill and Dean have banked revealed as they retire from ice skating

TORVILL and Dean have scored a Perfect 10 after banking a whopping £5million bonanza as they retire from ice skating. The pair performed together for the final time last weekend as they wrapped up their farewell tour in their hometown of Nottingham. Fresh accounts for Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's skating company Waikiki Limited show they are in great shape off the ice too, after amassing assets of £5m including £620,000 cash in the bank. The accounts, covering the year to 27 October 2024, showed a huge increase of £542,000 compared to the previous year. That works out at earnings of over £10,000 a week. Christopher, 66, and Jayne, 67, were coaches on Dancing On Ice from 2006 until it ended the first time around in 2014. When the ITV show returned in 2018, they became head judges on the panel alongside Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse. It was confirmed in March that the ITV show had been shelved with no plans for a new series. Former Dancing On Ice pro Alex Murphy suggested Torvill and Dean's plans to retire might have had something to do with the show being axed. She told The Sun: 'Torvill and Dean are national treasures. They are fantastic people, and the most iconic skaters in the skating world as a whole, not just England, and I think Britain sometimes doesn't recognise that, or even notice that they are iconic to the world. 'So it's their show. I just love that. It's their show. So whenever they're ready, I think, then that's when it will go.' The pair, both from Nottingham, first partnered in 1975 and have skated together ever since. Dancing On Ice legend breaks silence on show axe Their competitive career culminated in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo where the 12 perfect 6.0 scores, a feat that secured them the gold medal and captivated 24 million British television viewers. After turning professional, they embarked on successful world tours and created numerous ice shows. A change in Olympic rules allowed them to return for the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, where they earned a bronze medal.
