MATTA to launch training programs for tour vehicle operators
According to its president, Nigel Wong, the training programmes would equip drivers with skills to operate vehicles safely and professionally. It would also educate operators on best practices in vehicle maintenance, road safety and productivity.
'MATTA is also exploring the development of other relevant programmes.
Emergency response and crisis management modules would help drivers respond appropriately during unforeseen events such as accidents, vehicle breakdowns, or natural disasters, while familiarisation training on tourism routes would enable drivers to navigate key destinations efficiently and enhance the overall tour experience,' Wong said in a statement on Tuesday (July 22).
MATTA also welcomed the Transport Ministry's recent clarification on the suspension of Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licences.
Following a request by the association, the Ministry confirmed on July 13 that suspensions would apply strictly to drivers involved in serious or repeated offences, not those with minor or compoundable violations.
'This clear distinction ensures that enforcement is proportionate and fair,' said Wong.
The Ministry also stated that drivers found guilty of road offences would undergo a mandatory rehabilitation course (Kursus Pemulihan Wajib), implemented via the Road Transport Department (JPJ), for holders of both PSV and Goods Driving Licence (GDL).

SELANGAU (Aug 1): The Selangau Rafting Challenge 2025 has officially become part of the prestigious Borneo Raft Safari series, and is expected to be the main highlight of the upcoming Selangau Carnival 2025, said Majlis Daerah Luar Bandar Sibu (MDLBS) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong. Slated for October 26 (Sunday), the 21-kilometre river challenge will flag off at Rumah Empera, Sungai Wong Atas and end at the Selangau Waterfront. Wong said the organiser is targeting 50 teams, with hopes of attracting international participation. 'By being part of the Borneo Raft Safari, Selangau is now on the regional map for adventure tourism. 'We hope to see 50 teams, including international entries, experience our river and community,' he said during a press conference held here yesterday. The event, organised in collaboration with Grit Event Management, aims to offer participants a thrilling combination of adrenaline-fuelled rafting and scenic river tourism, further enhancing Selangau's appeal as an eco-adventure destination. The Selangau Carnival 2025 will be held from Oct 24 to 26 at Pasar Baru Selangau, featuring local sales booths, the 'Main Adat Asal Iban' cultural showcase, karaoke competition finals, a Zumba session, and a digital marketing workshop. inDrive Eyes 40,000 Active Drivers, Confident In Expansion Amid EVP Issues
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- United States-based e-hailing company inDrive remains confident of reaching 40,000 active drivers by year-end and affirms that its Malaysian expansion will not be jeopardised by the e-hailing vehicle permit (EVP) and public service vehicle (PSV)-related issues. InDrive Malaysia country lead Govin Kumaar Panirsheeluam said the Land Public Transport Agency's (APAD) decision to allow inDrive to continue operations under a three-month monitoring period does not impact its overall operations in the country, and inDrive remains compliant with the regulations. 'We are close to the target of 40,000 (drivers), and we will remain steadfast in engaging with the regular stakeholders, (including) the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and APAD, in this matter. So we do not foresee any issues,' he told a media conference held to explain its operating status and future plans. InDrive Asia Pacific director Mark Tolley affirmed that Malaysia is one of its core markets, adding that the decision to set up its regional hub in Kuala Lumpur reflected the company's commitment and belief in the brand's continued growth in the country, despite recent regulatory issues. 'We have strengthened our internal processes, and we have taken the lead by modifying our platform -- by adding a layer of verification in the (inDrive) platform where we make sure that all the documentation provided by the drivers is verified correctly, and make sure that all the information provided is correct,' he said. Earlier, inDrive officially received confirmation from the MOT and APAD to continue operations in Malaysia, following the conclusion of a review process. InDrive is also committed to ensuring that all drivers on its platform are required to possess valid EVP and PSV licenses, as well as e-hailing insurance, and must pass document verification before being allowed to operate. The ride-hailing company has since implemented enhanced internal checks and is working closely with APAD to strengthen its compliance systems. Since entering Malaysia in 2021, inDrive has expanded its footprint from the Klang Valley to Penang and Johor Bahru.
