Digvijaya Singh's brother finally faces axe for relentless criticism of Congress high command
AICC Disciplinary Action Committee member Tariq Anwar announced Lakshman Singh's expulsion on Wednesday from the Congress's primary membership 'for a period of six years, with immediate effect, due to his anti-party activities'.
While Digvijaya Singh is one of the titans of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh, Lakshman Singh has never really been at ease in the party and even left it to join the BJP for a while. The Congress took him back but, insiders say, his relentless criticism recently had made Lakshman Singh an unmanageable liability.
The 70-year-old has been attacking the party leadership since he lost from the Chachoura seat in the 2023 Assembly elections. His criticism has spanned from personal attacks on Gandhi and questioning the party's electoral strategy to the Congress response to the Pahalgam terror attack and its boycott of the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony. He has even refused to support Digvijaya's campaign against EVMs in the state.
On Wednesday, Lakshman Singh remained unreachable for comment.
A senior Congress functionary said: 'When Rahul Gandhi came to Bhopal as part of the party organisation overhaul, he had spoken about senior leaders making nonsensical statements. This (Lakshman Singh's) expulsion signals to all those involved in anti-party activities that such behaviour damaging the party will no longer be tolerated.'
Earlier, a show-cause notice had been served to Lakshman Singh after he commented on some remarks by Rahul Gandhi and brother-in-law Robert Vadra in context of the Pahalgam terrorist attack last month, saying: 'Gandhi and Vadra are immature. The country is suffering the consequences of their immaturity… How long will the Congress have to put up with (their) immaturity?'
He added: 'Rahul Gandhi should think before he speaks, he is the LoP (Leader of the Opposition).'
When the Congress decided to stay away from the Ayodhya Ram Temple inauguration last year, Lakshman Singh said: 'As far as invitation is concerned, what is the meaning of declining it? What message are we sending? When Rajiv Gandhi got it (the locks of the Babri Masjid) unlocked, who are you to decline it? If our leadership keeps such advisors, the results would be the same as they have been so far.'
In December 2023, Lakshman Singh told reporters: 'Rahul Gandhi is just a party worker. He is just an MP. Apart from that, he is nothing. You people too should not highlight Rahul Gandhi so much, nor should we. No one becomes a great leader by birth, one becomes great by his/her actions. Don't consider Rahul Gandhi such a great leader, I don't.'
Even earlier, during protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, Lakshman Singh had gone against the party line and advocated acceptance of the legislation, now that it had been passed. 'All parties have expressed their views. More comments, statements on this subject are meaningless. Let's accept it and move on.'
The former Congress MLA also criticised the Congress for failure to fulfill its signature promise of farm loan waivers when in power briefly between 2019 and 2022, demanding that Gandhi apologise to the Madhya Pradesh farmers for the same. 'He should also clarify to them how long it will take for a loan waiver,' Lakshman Singh said.
A seasoned politician, Lakshman Singh has served five terms as MP and three as MLA, establishing his credentials across multiple constituencies.
His political journey began in 1987 from the Raghogarh municipality. Since then, he has won twice from the Raghogarh Assembly seat, before achieving a five-term victory streak from the Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency. One of these times, in 2004, Lakshman Singh won from Rajgarh on the BJP ticket, having shifted to the party.
But the Congress won back the constituency in 2009, defeating Lakshman Singh as the BJP candidate. Soon, Singh was in trouble within the BJP, and in July 2010, was expelled from the party's primary membership after publicly condemning senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari. By January 2013, Singh was back in the Congress fold.

Thick-skinned: Mohan Yadav slams Rahul Gandhi for repeated attacks on institutions
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday renewed his attacks on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of stubbornly continuing his line of criticism in elections despite judicial censure, calling him "thick-skinned".Yadav's attack came in specific reference to the Congress leader being recently reprimanded by the Supreme Court for claiming that India ceded 2,000 sq km of its territory to China and the rejection of his claim of "vote chori" by the Election at a program on Independence Day, Yadav described Gandhi as so "thick-skinned" that "even repeated reprimands by the Supreme Court and the High Court have no effect on him". Yadav took aim at Gandhi's continued allegations against institutions, saying, "On the contrary, he repeatedly puts institutions in the dock. Despite being punished by the Supreme Court for statements like Chowkidar chor hai, he did not change his language and attitude".The chief minister added, "Don't know from where he has started talking about chori-chori".These comments come a day after Mohan Yadav accused Gandhi of being an "urban Naxal", while speaking to India Today also sought to underscore the resilience of India's democratic framework. "The world's largest democracy is strong because of the Election Commission. The Election Commission has passed every test".He implied that Gandhi's allegations, rather than fostering transparency, actually target and weaken public trust in foundational escalation follows Rahul Gandhi's ongoing "vote chori" campaign, in which he accuses the Election Commission and the BJP of electoral malpractice. Gandhi's claims have been publicly rebuked by the poll August 14, the poll panel dismissed the use of phrases like "vote chori" calling them "dirty phrases" that fuel misleading pointed out that India has upheld the principle of "one person, one vote" since 1951–52 and demanded Gandhi produce proof—specifically via a written affidavit—rather than general accusations that, in their words, "colour all the electors of India as 'chor' without any proof.- EndsMust Watch

Odisha announces 21 NACs to boost infrastructure and services under urbanisation
The Mohan Majhi Government on Friday (August 15, 2025) announced the creation of 21 new Notified Area Councils (NACs) to boost infrastructure and services in line with Odisha's urbanisation needs. 'Better infrastructure and urbanisation are key components of development. Only 17% of our population lives in urban areas. Considering the State's rapid growth and people's aspirations, our government has decided to establish 21 more NACs,' Chief Minister Mohan Majhi declared during the Independence Day celebrations here. The creation of NACs was a major campaign plank ahead of the 2024 elections. The previous Naveen Patnaik Government had promised to set up NACs and municipalities to woo semi-urban voters, but the names were never announced. The Majhi Government also unveiled a welfare measure under which every family covered by the Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will receive an additional 5 kg of rice per month for the next three months, benefiting 27 lakh families. After unfurling the Tricolour, Mr. Majhi dwelt at length on women's empowerment and safety — an issue on which the Opposition parties had been sharply critical. 'I have said on various platforms that the government follows a policy of zero tolerance towards crimes against women. Anyone committing violence against women — no matter how powerful or influential — belongs behind bars, not in civilised society,' he asserted. The CM, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the police had been given full authority to take necessary action. 'I have issued clear instructions that any neglect of women's safety will invite strict legal action. While law and order is generally under control, it must become more effective and robust,' he said. The State Government has recently faced criticism following a spate of incidents — including four girls committing self-immolation and several cases of gang rape and sexual assault — with both the Congress and Biju Janata Dal attacking its handling of women's safety.

BJP wraps Dharmasthala case in faith narrative, Congress battles perception war
Bengaluru: What began as an investigation into allegations of mass burials at Dharmasthala — one of the country's most prominent Hindu pilgrimage centres — has evolved into a politically charged contest over faith, identity, and control of the narrative. The special investigation team (SIT), tasked with examining claims that hundreds of bodies were secretly buried, has so far produced limited physical evidence. Yet in the political arena, the case is being reframed as an attack on Hinduism, with BJP signalling it could be a major campaign plank in the run-up to the 2028 assembly polls — a prospect which troubles governing Congress. The investigation was launched in July after a whistleblower — a former sanitation worker employed at the temple from 1995 to 2014 — alleged he had buried hundreds of bodies, including women allegedly .raped before being killed. He also claimed he faced threats to his life and family if he spoke out. Opposition leader in the assembly R Ashoka called it an anti-Hindu conspiracy to defame the temple by both "urban naxals and international hands", while incorrectly claiming the whistleblower is a Muslim. He is a Dalit. BJP also views the matter as a potential rallying issue, with Vishwa Hindu Parishad hinting at a statewide campaign, describing the investigation as part of a drive by "divisive forces". On Sunday, a team of BJP functionaries is expected to visit Dharmasthala as devotees in a show of support. Congress, wary of being labelled anti-Hindu, has reined in its criticism and has been insisting that they ordered the probe with good intentions and not to defame the temple. "Should such claims be allowed to linger?" home minister G Parameshwara asked. "Shouldn't the truth behind these allegations emerge? We formed the SIT to find the truth, so that those facing allegations are treated fairly." He also said the govt is contemplating action against those who carried out a misinformation campaign – including the sanitation worker – against the pilgrim town and its authorities, if investigation fails to substantiate the allegations. But deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar struck a different note, echoing BJP's position: "It is a big conspiracy to tarnish the pilgrim town." Analysts say this divergence underscores Congress's concern over the BJP's Hindutva framing. Political analyst MN Patil said: "Instead of debating whether crimes took place, the conversation has veered toward whether Hindu temples are being unfairly targeted. This narrative mobilises BJP's core vote-bank." Dharmasthala's hereditary head, Veerendra Heggade, has been Dharmadhikari since 1968 and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by BJP in 2022 — a fact seen as adding a political layer to the controversy. Legal expert N Venkatesh warned: "When you cast a criminal allegation as an attack on religion, the legal process becomes subordinate to political mobilisation."
