Airport costs are plane crazy as Scots get financially hammered again
In a week when UK inflation was confirmed as rising again, it seems like Scots are getting hammered financially every way they turn. The Labour Government has boosted the minimum wage, the state pension and welfare spending has risen overall.
But that can't undo the explosion in the cost of living in the immediate. aftermath of Tory austerity and the coronavirus pandemic. Wages have not kept pace, interest rates caused mortgages to soar and ordinary households have been hit by soaring fuel bills.
At this time of year, those fortunate enough to enjoy a summer holiday abroad leave their worries at home for a week or two as they fly off to warmer climes. But Scots travellers are in for one final cost-of-living blow before they can even step on their plane.
Both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are among those in the UK which have increased drop-off charges. An absurd fee for stopping for less than a minute.
Edinburgh Airport raised the charges by £1, with Glasgow Airport adding 50p, bringing the charge for both airports to £6. It might not seem like much – until you consider most of the busiest EU airports have no equivalent charges.
It's another reminder of just how expensive it is to live in the UK. And how those who own our major infrastructure – like airports, energy firms and banks – often treat the public with contempt.

Teens get a voice
The UK Government is right to give 16 and 17-year-olds the vote in general elections. The voting age was lowered in Scotland for the 2014 independence referendum.
It was made permanent a year later and contributed to a much higher number of people getting out to vote at the 2016 and 2021 Holyrood elections. It works as a way of increasing participation and interest in politics.
At 16, young people can leave school, get a job and pay taxes. In Scotland, they can get married and join the Armed Forces. They contribute to our country so ought to have a say on where the money they are taxed on is spent.
As the American revolutionaries said during the late 18th century: 'No taxation without representation.' The result of the general election has a huge impact on their future, so they deserve to have a voice.

Despite its size, the design is surprisingly space-saving, and it comes with eight preset cooking programs, one manual mode, and a rotary knob for precise control over time (up to 60 minutes) and temperature (from 80C to 200C). In addition to its large basket and ease of use, the Tefal Easy Fry Mega Air Fryer is also energy-efficient, with tests showing it uses up to 65 percent less energy and cooks up to 37 percent faster than a traditional oven when preparing frozen fries. The basket is dishwasher-safe, and Tefal promises 15-year reparability with parts available at over 6,200 global centres, a strong selling point for anyone thinking long term. If you're exploring other air fryer options, the Tower T17182 7.2L Air Fryer is available at £60 on Argos and offers similar capacity and functionality with a sleek black finish. Another option is the more advanced Ninja 6-in-1 Dual Zone Air Fryer 7.6L, currently £129.99, down from £199.99. The Soudorv smartwatch has plummeted from its original £99.99 price tag to £23.74. This timepiece boasts an extensive array of capabilities, including 3D full touch technology, step counting, stroke monitoring, sleep tracking, alarm functionality, sedentary reminders, remote photography control, and music management. Wearers can also conduct and receive phone calls, record conversations, and monitor weather conditions, reports the Daily Record. The device doubles as a fitness companion, offering over 100 exercise modes, magnetic charging, app notification alerts, and extended battery performance. For shoppers happy to avoid the big names of smart watches like Apple and Samsung, there are plenty of good deals available currently. Shoppers can snap up the Reflex Active Series 12 Smartwatch for £29.95 from Currys. Otherwise, H. Samuel has the Sekonda Flex Rose Gold Tone Bracelet Smartwatch for £65, while Argos has the Fitbit Charge 6 Fitness Tracker for £99. Meanwhile, the Amazon timepiece has garnered glowing feedback from users, earning a stellar 4.9-star rating. One satisfied customer commented: "Stylish and functional. Impressive smartwatch with great features at a great price." A second reviewer said: "This is a great watch for daily use. It is light, comfortable, and looks nice on the wrist. The screen is clear, and the touch response is smooth and effective. I use it to track my steps, monitor my heart rate, and assess my sleep quality. It's also waterproof, so I don't have to take it off when washing my hands. "The battery lasts a few days, which is very good. Another customer said: " Sleek and powerful. This smartwatch combines sleek design with powerful features like fitness tracking, notifications, and heart rate monitoring. The touchscreen is responsive, and the battery lasts well for daily use. It's a great companion for staying organised and active on the go." However, not all customers were completely satisfied. One unimpressed buyer said: "The strap broke after three weeks, so it's now unusable. Can't send it back as it's a week after the return date." Another customer, while generally happy, did encounter a hiccup: "Only minor issue was syncing it with the app at first, but it's been smooth since." Despite these issues, many continued to sing the praises of the watch. A satisfied shopper commented: "This ladies' smartwatch fitness tracker is easy to use and looks beautiful. It helps track your steps, heart rate, sleep, and more to keep you healthy. "The design is simple and stylish, perfect for everyday wear. 'Holiday from hell' as Scots family given 'mouldy caravan with hole in it'
James Duffy was furious at the park experience, saying they were given a caravan with a hole in it, they were initially charged to use the pool and there was a lack of activities. A Scots dad is fuming after his family had the "holiday from hell" when they were given a caravan with a 'hole in it' and mould on the outside. James Duffy from Niddrie, Edinburgh, booked the four-night stay at Eyemouth Holiday Park, in the Scottish Borders, at the start of June and said he was shocked by the state of the caravan his family were given upon arrival. The 42-year-old took his partner Rachelle, their five-year-old daughter, his mum and her partner to the seaside spot. However, both James's mum, who has COPD, and his daughter fell ill after the first night. James also said he was forced to pay for use of the nearby pool which is advertised as being included in the price online. Overall, the dad claimed what was meant to be a rare holiday for his family ended up being more stressful than staying at home as he was left "gutted" by the experience and vowed never to return. Speaking to Edinburgh Live, James said: "I'll not go to any of their resorts after this. There was meant to be nightly entertainment and we only got to do two of the activities we booked. "We got there in the afternoon but it wasn't until around 10pm I noticed the state of the caravan. I just saw a big hole in the back and thought 'this is ridiculous '. "There was tape over the hole and it was peeling off the caravan. From the inside you can see the light coming in from the inside. "My mum was sitting there wheezing as she has COPD and had to sleep in that caravan then felt awful the next day. I obviously can't prove the state of the caravan had anything to do with it but it's quite a coincidence. "Nobody slept in that room with the hole. My partner and I just pulled out the couch. It was mega uncomfortable but I didn't want anyone to sleep in that room. "We were looking forward to this for a while as we don't have the money to go abroad so it was just a little break for me and the family. The least we expected was to enjoy it." After raising a complaint with staff at the Parkdean Resort, James and his family were given an alternative caravan the following day. When Edinburgh Live approached Parkdean Resorts for comment, they claimed James failed to show his pass for the swimming pool and the charge has since been refunded due to the error. James also paid for an activity day pass for £21 and claims he was told the park don't offer certain activities as his daughter was left with just two to take part in across the four days. "There was supposed to be a free bingo session during the day for folk who couldn't make it at night and they couldn't even manage that," James added. "My daughter really wanted a swim so my partner took her and we were told if we showed our passes we'd get free access. We were to go within a certain time and they said we had to pay £15.50 for 45 minutes. "I don't know how they can get away with it and offering a family of five a mouldy caravan like that." A spokesperson for Eyemouth Holiday Park has since apologised for the family's experience and offered £100 as a gesture of goodwill, which was unaccepted, although James maintains he still isn't happy. A spokesperson for Eyemouth Holiday Park said: 'We have high standards for hygiene and cleanliness at our parks. As soon as we were made aware of this isolated issue, we moved the family to alternative accommodation. "We have apologised to Mr Duffy for his experience and offered a gesture of goodwill, which was accepted. 'Park guests receive complimentary access to the local swimming pool. As Mr Duffy was charged in error, we have issued a full refund for the funds he spent on pool access.'
