Bhaisahi river in Mau district breathes new life, boosts employment in region

Varanasi: The Bhaisahi river, which winds its way through Mau district over a 53.15 km stretch, had teetered on the edge of extinction. However, thanks to a concerted revival effort, a 41.20 km section of the river has been rejuvenated. This ambitious restoration project not only breathed new life into the river, but also generated a significant 177,900 man-days of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). In response to the call given by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in May to restore endangered rivers in the state, the Mau district administration chose Bhaisahi. This river flows 175 km, originating from Dostpur in Sultanpur and merging with the Tons (Tamsa) near Bahadurganj in Ghazipur, after passing through Mau and Azamgarh. The primary objective of this project was to ensure year-round water availability in Bhaisahi by strengthening the ecosystem and addressing various problems caused by encroachment on its land, said Mau DM Praveen Mishra. Before finalising the plan following the selection of Bhaisahi, the DM said there were many challenges, such as removing encroachments from this entirely silted river. This situation not only caused rainwater to spread and flood neighbouring areas, damaging crops and causing significant soil erosion, but the stagnant rainwater also posed a risk of infectious diseases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cyprus investments might be cheaper than you think Investments Cyprus | Search Ads Get Info Undo Raising awareness among the people about the significance of natural resources and encouraging them to join hands for the revival of the extinct river was also a major challenge, he added. "We also sought the opinion of river circulation system and wetland expert Prof Venkatesh Dutt about necessary steps to maintain the river's continuous flow, such as where to plant trees in concave and convex areas and which areas to leave vacant," said Mishra. After finalising the plan, the restoration work on Bhaisahi, which flows through 31 village panchayats in three development blocks of the district, began. The restoration of the river started under the MNREGA scheme. By engaging men and women from 18 village panchayats in Ranipur block, two in Mohammadabad Gohana, and 11 in Pardaha, restoration works have been completed over 41.20 km of the total length of 53.15 km in the district. Works in the Pardaha block were halted due to waterlogging. He also recalled that a former MLC, Yashwant Singh, worked hard to mobilise villagers by visiting them and highlighting the benefits of rivers to humanity. He informed the local people about the advantages at the village panchayat level. After demarcating river land, removing encroachments, and assigning tasks to village heads, secretaries, technical assistants, and workers, the irrigation department team collected comprehensive information about the river's cross-section bed level, bed width, top width, highest flood level, and discharge. This ensured that the restoration and excavation did not harm the environment. The work was carried out at the village panchayat level under the MNREGA scheme, creating approximately 177,900 man-days of employment. He added that 134,800 trees were planted along the riverbanks to secure the embankments, maintain water coolness, and establish a robust ecosystem throughout the area. Upon project completion, check dams will be constructed after river cleaning to ensure year-round water availability. Other districts, such as Jaunpur and Mirzapur, also worked on the restoration of the Pili and Khajuri rivers in this region of eastern UP. PMC issues guidelines for Ganeshotsav pandals with focus on traffic flow

The mandals have been asked to keep adequate space for walkers and avoid blocking the entire road or footpath. They have also been told to prepare a plan for the movement of vehicles and pedestrians in the surrounding area during the festival. Over 3,500 mandals celebrate Ganeshotsav across Pune by erecting pandals. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials said mandals are also expected to ensure that their pandals are erected with adequate safety measures in place, considering the huge footfall of visitors. Shukrawar Peth resident Ganesh Pawar said, "There should be no chaos due to festivities that obstructs school traffic. We also PMC and mandals to restore the roads and clear footpaths soon after the festival ends." Shivajinagar resident Vikrant Soman said, "Police should not close roads without reason. Stretches can remain open for commuters in the daytime and shut for vehicles post-evening. Complete closure could lead to hardships." In Pimpri Chinchwad, the police appealed to Ganesh mandals to celebrate a laser-free festival. Pimpri Chinchwad commissioner of police (CP) Vinoy Kumar Choubey observed that use of laser beams and loud music systems can cause harm. "Last year, there was considerable use of laser beams during the festival, which led to the loss of eyesight for some people," the top cop said. He was speaking on the sidelines of the presentation of 'Shri Morya Puraskar' for 2024. The CP also said Pimpri Chinchwad police have started an online system to issue permissions to Ganesh mandals. While seeking permission, mandals should mention details of their trustees, size of pandal, and registration letter from the charity commissioner's office. Asked about preparations, PCMC commissioner Shekhar Singh said they will soon start road repairs, cutting of tree branches, and shifting electricity poles and wires on procession routes. "We will keep the ghats clean for immersions. PCMC has also started a single-window system for issuing necessary permissions for mandals," Singh said. Avoid these 9 hotspots to dodge stray cattle, snarls in MCG, MCM areas

Gurgaon: The stray cattle problem on the city's roads doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. But municipal agencies — MCG and MCM — have identified nine hotspots that you can keep in mind when you drive around. These places, according to the agencies, see higher cattle concentration because of bovines converging at these spots from different areas. Among the hotspots is Wazirabad traffic signal, Anaj Mandi, New Colony and Hero Honda Chowk, which all report heavy traffic and traffic chaos are common at these places because of the unexpected appearance of cattle on the hotspots for stray cattle identified by the civic agencies include — besides the above four areas — Badshapur Sabzi Mandi, Sector 90, Sector 50, Faridabad-Gurgaon Toll and Manesar Bus Stand. Poonam Kumar, a resident of Sector 14, said stray cattle are a big problem all across the city."You go to any part of the city and one will find stray cattle sitting in the middle of the road, causing congestion," said Kumar, adding that in some cases, stray cattle become aggressive, posing a risk to the lives of commuters, particularly pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Antivirus protection may end soon: Click here to renew McAfee Learn More Undo Prabhjot Singh, a resident of Sector 10A, said Hero Honda Chowk is one of the busiest junctions in the city and the presence of stray cattle further adds to the chaos at the junction. "It is strange that authorities do not see the stray cattle and they have failed to do anything about the issue," said Singh. During the last five years, MCG has spent around Rs 150 crore on catching stray cattle, but it has hardly had any significant impact on the city streets. The civic officials put the blame on local herders. They say the agency capturing the stray cattle is facing resistance from local herders."Our drive to catch the stray cattle faces stiff resistance from the local herders. They even attack the team and vandalise the vehicle," said an MCG official, adding that the MCG has requested police protection during the civic agency has also requested the animal husbandry department to tag all the cattle at dairies in the city. Around 2,000 stray cattle — including cows, bulls and calves — were captured by the civic agencies during the last six months. MCG hired two agencies and MCM hired one agency for catching stray cattle. The civic bodies pay Rs 1,000 for catching one stray cattle. Gurgaon has two gaushalas in Caterpuri and Chauma, which house around 3,500 cattle. Besides, MCG sent more than 3,000 stray cattle to three different gaushalas in Nuh at Silani and Sangel. The MCG spends around Rs 50 lakh every year on fodder for cattle kept at these also has a cow shelter, but it has no space left for additional cattle.
