PAWS Chicago taking in dogs, cats from Texas in aftermath of deadly floods
The Chicago organization started picking up pets who were already in shelters when the flooding began. By taking in these animals, PAWS said it allows the shelters in the flood-affected areas in Texas to make room for animals displaced by the disaster and focus on reuniting families with beloved pets.
PAWS picked up its first flight of 22 dogs and puppies from the Nebraksa City Municipal Airport Monday afternoon from Concho Valley PAWS, a rescue organization in San Angelo, Texas. The Chicago volunteers then drove the dogs back to the city, where they are receiving medical care, vaccinations and any other additional attention before they are made available for fostering and adoption.
Another flight of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will arrive from Austin, Texas, Wednesday night, the organization said.

Local nonprofit provides donations to thousands hurt by Texas floods
(WHTM) — After the devastating floods that left thousands displaced in Kerr County, Texas, one Cumberland County nonprofit is helping in the recovery process. Mission Central of Mechanicsburg has been donating to those affected by disasters nationwide since 2002. Today, they packed a truck with 900 sanitation buckets, looking to assist in cleaning and laundry, as well as 2,000 menstrual hygiene kits. Executive Director Hope Harrison says the most important part of disaster relief is listening. 'For us, it's very important that we wait until they get to the ground and find out what the needs actually are, and so right now those 3 things are the biggest needs,' said Harrison. 'As time moves on, we'll hear more disaster relief, we're gonna hear more, and it will change.' The truck is expected to arrive in Texas tomorrow. Extreme heat expected this weekend in South Florida could cause health risks to some
The NEXT Weather Team is tracking a scorching weekend across South Florida. While we will not be expecting a Heat Advisory, we will see heat indexes of 100-105 throughout the day on Saturday. Those triple digit "feels like" temperatures will return on Sunday. A high-pressure system moving across Northern Florida is driving away any chance we have of rain this weekend. The heat indexes will peak around noon on Saturday and last through the early evening hours and will not "cool-down" until after midnight. It's important to stay hydrated, limit outdoor afternoon activity and wear light-colored clothing. You're also encouraged to check on your senior relatives and neighbors who are extremely susceptible to the heat. The heat and dry conditions last all weekend with the regular summer rain returning by midweek.

Heat index cranks up "feels-like" temperatures to triple digits in North Texas this weekend
Summer has arrived in Texas. A typical summertime weather pattern is in place with lots of sunshine, heat and very little rain. Temperatures Saturday morning started off in the upper 70s with partly cloudy skies. Afternoon highs will once again top out in the mid to upper 90s with "feels-like" temperatures around 102 degrees.
