Two British tourists have reportedly drowned after jumping into their holiday apartment pool after a night out

Police are said to be working on the theory the pair, aged 27 and 29, got into difficulties because they had been drinking and didn't know how to swim.
The alarm was raised around 4.30am this morning at a hotel-apartment in the party resort of Albufeira where two British men died last month.
Emergency responders sent to the scene made unsuccessful attempts to revive them.
Portugal's Policia Judiciaria have been asked by colleagues at the GNR police force to investigate the circumstances surrounding the men's deaths but they are not being treated as suspicious at this stage.

At least one local paper in Portugal is reporting the two men who died this morning were both British and were holidaying with friends.
Portuguese police could not be reached this afternoon for an official comment.

After all, there is a tried-and-tested playbook for sports stars, celebrities or politicians when answering questions about a misdemeanour on the record. You know the sort of thing I'm talking about: 'I'm incredibly sorry, it was a huge error of judgement. I'm going to change,' etc etc. Advertisement Then Oisin began talking, and the first thing to come out of his mouth was: 'There was going to be a lot said in the media and it's important not to allow the media to bully you too much.' Is he for real? Everything I've read and heard so far about this depressing case has, categorically, been fair comment. Despite everything that's happened during his turbulent career, he still behaves like he is above criticism. He is not just the four-time champion jockey, he also is a role model. His actions will rightly be scrutinised and he will be held to account, whether he likes it or not, just like other people in similar positions of privilege. Fortunately she is very well.' What a crock of s***. To my knowledge, there was never any reporting in the British press about the condition of the girl outside of the initial police report. She was not named by the police or in court therefore she wasn't identified by the media, let alone speculation printed or broadcast about her injuries, or lack thereof. When dealing with criminal matters, there are legal guidelines the media have to work within. Advertisement Nothing before, during or after the court case would have been published without the OK or advice from lawyers, so where is his evidence of misinformation? This was a lame Donald Trump tribute act. You can't just shout 'fake news' because you aren't a fan of what's being said. At first, I thought he was possibly conflating (or even confusing) the actual media and social media. Mind you, he emphasised to Chapman 'your colleagues'. It did not appear to be a slip of the tongue. Advertisement He added: 'Not everyone wants one to achieve, there's a lot of jealousy, particularly in the media, but I worked all my life to ride good horses and I'll continue to do that.' Who exactly is jealous? I stopped being jealous of other's achievements when I was 13-years-old. He didn't offer an apology but there was a degree of contrition in the interview — he said he'd been having counselling and it had been a 'nightmare' for all involved. He thanked the BHA, his support network and said he was the only person who could stop his career progressing. He's not wrong. Advertisement So why go after the press? As soon as you deflect and begin involving other people you are, by definition, refusing to take full responsibility or ownership of your actions. And that is the only way to deal with a situation like this. Also, who the hell is advising him? Prince Andrew's PR team? Greg Wallace, perhaps? You play this sorry saga with a straight bat, even if you don't care about what's happened, and those around him should have told him as much. You don't come out playing shots and blaming others. Advertisement It sounds like he is getting professional help, which is clearly a positive, but he has not stated publicly since the accident his intention to give up alcohol. He doesn't need to look far for inspiration — look what Richard Hughes achieved in the saddle when he knocked drink on the head. Dealing with addiction requires commitment, you have to be in it for the long haul and prepared to confront your problems. Believe it or not, Oisin, everyone in this sport thinks you are a supreme talent and they want you to sort yourself out. But you are not the victim in this case. Fans called for Lions star Maro Itoje to be banned after ugly incident
Maro Itoje will take on the captaincy for the British and Irish Lions in their opening Test against Australia on Saturday. As they kick off their summer series, the England lock will be looked upon to set the tone with his leadership. Despite a loss to Argentina in Dublin prior to heading Down Under, the Lions have since been unbeaten, securing five victories out of five on Australian turf. However, the heat is about to be turned up in Brisbane, where Itoje will need to be on top form. This comes after the Saracens star faced intense scrutiny during the 2021 Lions tour of South Africa. The 30-year-old was lambasted by hordes of Springboks supporters and South African media following an altercation with centre Damian de Allende. In fact, some even called for Itoje's suspension after he was seen on camera kneeling on De Allende's chest, shoulder and neck area. This incident occurred during the second Test in Cape Town, which South Africa clinched 27-9, levelling the series ahead of the final match. Double Rugby World Cup champion De Allende retaliated by tackling Itoje from the ground. He then stood over the England forward and shoved him in the head before Itoje made his own appeal to referee Ben O'Keeffe. Neither player faced any immediate punishment, but that didn't stop the online community from passing judgement on the unfortunate incident. And it seemed that the majority of fans on social media believed Itoje was at fault. Trump files $10bn lawsuit against Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch over Epstein report
US PRESIDENT DONALD Trump filed a lawsuit yesterday against The Wall Street Journal and media mogul Rupert Murdoch, a day after the newspaper published a story reporting on ties to wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Miami. It seeks at least 10 billion dollars (€8.6 billion) in damages. Trump promised a lawsuit after the newspaper described a sexually suggestive letter that the newspaper says bore Trump's name and was included in a 2003 album for Epstein's 50th birthday. The president denied writing the letter, calling the story 'false, malicious, and defamatory'. The letter was reportedly collected by disgraced British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell as part of a birthday album for Epstein years before he was first arrested in 2006 and subsequently had a falling-out with Trump. The letter bearing Trump's name includes text framed by the outline of what appears to be a hand-drawn naked woman and ends with, 'Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret,' according to the newspaper. The outlet described the contents of the letter but did not publish a photo showing it entirely or provide details on how it came to learn about it. Wall Street Journal owner Dow Jones said it will 'vigorously defend' against legal action. 'We have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit,' a Dow Jones spokesperson said in a statement hours after Trump filed a suit seeking damages from the newspaper and its owner, media magnate Rupert Murdoch. Deputy attorney general Todd Blanche filed motions urging the court to unseal the Epstein transcripts as well as those in the case against Maxwell, who was convicted of luring teenage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein. Epstein killed himself in 2019 shortly after his arrest while awaiting trial. The Justice Department's announcement that it would not be making public any more Epstein files enraged parts of Trump's base , in part because members of his own administration had hyped the expected release and stoked conspiracies around the well-connected financier. The Justice Department said in the court filings that it will work with prosecutors in New York to make appropriate redactions of victim-related information and other personally identifying information before transcripts are released. 'Transparency in this process will not be at the expense of our obligation under the law to protect victims,' Blanche wrote. But despite the new push to release the grand jury transcripts, the administration has not announced plans to reverse course and release other evidence in its possession. Attorney general Pam Bondi had hyped the release of additional materials after the initial Epstein files disclosure in February sparked outrage because it contained no new revelations. A judge would have to approve the release of the grand jury transcripts, and it is likely to be a lengthy process to decide what can become public and to make redactions to protect sensitive witness and victim information. The records would show testimony from witnesses and other evidence presented by the prosecution during the secret grand jury proceedings, when a panel decides whether there is enough evidence to bring an indictment, or a formal criminal charge.
