Border conflict tarnishes tourists' perceptions of Thailand

Bangkok Posta day ago
The Thai-Cambodian border conflict has damaged the image of Thai tourism, though the economic impact remains limited, with estimated losses of around 3 billion baht, mostly in the affected border provinces.
Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong said the seven provinces along the border were severely affected by the clashes between the two countries, while other nationwide reported some cancellations.
Hotel room cancellations totalled more than 5,000 nationwide, with estimated losses of around 3 billion baht.
Mr Sorawong said that in the week from July 21-27, Thailand welcomed around 618,000 foreign tourists, an increase of 1% from the week before. The figure for the July 24-27 period when the clashes took place was 372,000, roughly the same as from July 17-20.
'There was no significant surge in cancellations nationwide, except among Cambodian tourists, whose numbers dropped by 53% since the clashes began,' he said.
Four countries — Japan, Australia, the Netherlands and the US — upgraded their travel advisories for Thailand from July 24-28, but none issued actual warnings against visiting the country.
A total of 21 countries issued general advisories, urging travellers to stay informed, exercise caution or avoid unnecessary travel near the border.
Mr Sorawong said the ministry and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would continue to monitor tourism sentiment for a while, particularly perceptions on social media.
He said the social listening survey on the TAT's Amazing Thailand online platform found the clashes have already affected the country's image, with negative posts about Thailand increasing from 6.8% to 11.3%, while positive posts decreased from 33.3% to 21.3%.
The country's image declined among foreigners, and foreign investors and tourists may delay their decisions to travel or invest in Thailand due to the increase in negative content and tensions along the border, said Mr Sorawong.
He said short-haul markets require more attention as these visitors are sensitive to security issues, particularly families and meeting or conference groups eager to travel during the summer school holidays.
The markets to watch include China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia, the minister said.
Rungroj Santadvanit, president of the lower northeastern chapter of the Thai Hotels Association, said that while some tourists have returned to travel in the border provinces, they are still avoiding Surin, Ubon Ratchathani and Buri Ram due to safety concerns.
He said the tourism recovery rate across the lower northeastern portion of the country is at only half of the normal volume, with hotels reporting occupancy rates of only 10-15%.

PCL says business owners keen on hospitality investment

More real estate business and other business owners are diversifying their portfolio to hospitality investment, hoping to generate recurring income from the growing tourism industry, says PCL Hospitality, a hospitality consultancy and management company. PCL is aiming for 100% revenue growth from hotel consultancy and management this year. It also projected that Thailand has the opportunity of securing 88 million foreign arrivals by 2033. "Over the past decades, Thai tourism always picked up fast after any crisis," said chief executive Patom Siriwattaprayoon. He said the number of foreign arrivals grew by 150% between 2010 and 2019, and the trend should continue between 2024 and 2033, eventually reaching 88.8 million arrivals. Driving factors include the expansion of airports nationwide over the coming years, which helps cater to growing inbound demand from countries with large populations, such as China, India and Indonesia. According to UN Tourism, Asia-Pacific accounted for a 25% market share of global tourism in 2019, with only Europe achieving a larger share. He said Thailand only needs 2.32% of the population in Asia-Pacific to visit in order to reach the 88.8-million milestone. PCL provides consultancy and management to international hotel chains as a third-party managing company under franchise contracts. Its clients include Hilton, Marriott, Accor, IHG, along with other white label hotels. There is room for franchise management of global chains to grow, particularly in the medium range of 100 rooms, he said. Mr Patom said many owners wish to operate hotels in order to generate more income in addition to their core business. PCL has three major client targets -- hotel owners who want to revamp their existing hotels, real estate developers, and owners of other business types, who own land plots and want to start a hospitality arm. Many want to shift from their core business, such as residential projects or factories, during a sluggish economy, he said. Since 2015, PCL has provided feasibility studies and brand selection to more than 10 hotels, and project management and technical services to over 30 hotels. The company is currently managing over 1,300 room keys and is eager to increase the number to 5,000 rooms by 2030, while it seeks to grow its annual revenue in consulting and management by 100%. Mr Patom said PCL also plans to develop and launch its own hotel brand in the premium economy segment, targeting second-tier cities in Thailand, with room prices averaging 1,500 baht. He said this sector has fewer competitors, while hotel locations could serve not only tourism purposes, but also business travellers, meetings, and weddings. An 80-120-room property should commence this year, and it plans to expand this model to other owners in the next stage. When it comes to new contracts, the company recently signed contracts to manage Nivata Koh Samui, Tapestry Collection by Hilton in Samui, Best Western Matter Tiwanon, and Hampton by Hilton Phuket Town.

Influencers to get a taste of film settings

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, has launched a global influencers campaign, bringing 30 influencers from around the world together to explore film locations for Jurassic World Rebirth in Phuket, Phangnga and Krabi from July 30 through Aug 3. Director Gareth Edwards and lead actors Jonathan Bailey, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audriana Miranda also visited Thailand to promote the film and highlight the country's potential as a leading location for film shoots. TAT governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said with "set-jetting", referring to travel inspired by film locations, gains popularity worldwide, the TAT adopted a film-led destination marketing strategy, using movies and series to promote Thai destinations by linking scenes in films or series with actual locations. Stephanie Lutjens, senior vice-president of global marketing at Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, said she is grateful for the company's "incredible" partnership with TAT. According to the TAT, the filming of Jurassic World Rebirth brought in more than 400 million baht and generated more than 2,200 jobs across three southern provinces, giving the region significant global exposure. The film was shot in Thailand in June and July of 2024, with scenes shot in Krabi, Phangnga and Trang. From Jan 1 to July 30 this year, 322 foreign film projects were shot in Thailand, generating more than 3.3 billion baht in production revenue, according to the Thailand Film Office in the Tourism Department. Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, president of the Phuket Tourist Association, said filming in Thailand can draw attention to the country and raise awareness of its tourist destinations. Moreover, some movie fans may be inspired to visit film locations and travel along the routes seen in movies they enjoy. He said some locations have started promoting film tourism routes, such as those featured in Jurassic World Rebirth, which has encouraged both Thai and foreign tourists to follow these film-inspired travel routes. Mr Thaneth said he supports the cash rebate programme for film productions, adding filming in certain locations such as national parks may still involve complicated paperwork and difficult contact procedures. He recommended the government establish a one-stop service centre for production companies to manage all their requirements in a single place, making the filming process easier.
