Abbie excited as Wrexham tackle Cardiff in big cup final

Leader Live26-04-2025

It's been a campaign of ups and downs for Steve Dale's Reds, but they have been in excellent form since the turn of the year and they will be hoping to continue this trend against Cardiff City in Sunday's Welsh Cup final.
Newport's Rodney Parade will play host to the match-up, which sees Wrexham coming up against the league champions for the second consecutive season.
Asked what a cup final win would mean, Iddenden told the club's YouTube channel: 'Everything. I think every player, whatever team you're at, you want to win some silverware.
'But, Wrexham's a special club and to come here and have the chance of winning some silverware with the season like we have would be incredibly special and I think for everyone that's played a part in it, it just shows the kind of character and the resilience that we've got as a team.
'So, it would be huge.'
Iddenden has been a major part of Wrexham's recovery during a mixed campaign in the Adran Premier.
Off the pace during the early portion of the campaign, the Reds have turned things around and they have displayed some excellent form since the turn of the year.
They have lost just twice in the league since December and Iddenden topped the league's scoring stakes during phase two of the season with six goals.
On getting used to surroundings at the club, she added: 'I think it's always hard coming into a new team, finding your feet and kind of understanding how the team plays. But, I think, kind of before Christmas, before I got injured, I was finding my feet a bit then.
'So, it was a bit of a setback, but definitely feel like I've hit the ground running again now.
'So, it's exciting and positive. So, can't wait for the rest of the season.'
Wrexham are looking for revenge for their Welsh Cup final defeat 12 months ago.
The Reds produced an excellent display to push Cardiff all the way, but goals from Rhianne Oakley and Emma Beynon made sure of a domestic treble for Cardiff.
However, City haven't had things all their own way this time around. The Adran Trophy title was claimed by The New Saints, while Cardiff have been forced to work hard to defend their league crown.
Wrexham have finally broken their duck versus the Bluebirds - and they've achieved two vital victories against their rivals.
In early March, Ava Suckley and Iddenden saw Wrexham triumph on their travels and the Reds followed this up with a superb 4-2 outcome at home earlier this month. Rosie Hughes' opener was followed by Iddenden's hat-trick on a cracking day for Steve Dale's charges.
There's one North East Wales League match on Sunday as Northop Hall visit Berriew.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Club World Cup refusal still a victory for Gianni Infantino

Ignore the fact players are openly admitting they do not want to be there. Take no notice of Premier League managers saying they will not even watch on TV. Or that ticket prices have been cut by 85 percent because thousands of seats remain unsold. Gianni Infantino, forever modest, is promising that the FIFA Club World Cup will be football's PINNACLE thanks to the shiny golden trophy featuring his own signature and eye-watering $1bn prize pot. Or at least that is what you might think if you have been absorbing his propaganda on YouTube. Infantino has long proven himself more contentman than footballman with no tradition or structure safe from the claws of financial growth. So the sight of FIFA's president stirring the pot by claiming Cristiano Ronaldo could still sign for one of the 32 clubs participating in this yawning mess when appearing on shock jock iShowSpeed's channel will have come as no surprise. 'There are discussions,' Infantino said in a bizarre livestream from his bedroom. 'There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup... who knows, who knows." Except anyone who did know knew that speculative attention-seekers suggesting he could team up with great foe Lionel Messi at Inter Miami was far-flung nonsense. There were 'talks, contacts,' Ronaldo said, but he will not be in the US with the 40-yearr-old confirming he is set to remain at Al Nassr, the Saudi side paying him handsomely, for another season. "You have to think about short, medium and long term," he said. Which might initially come across as a major blow to Infantino's aspirations for this competition. How can it be the pinnacle if one of the two players to have defined football so far this millennium is not involved? Except really this media circus, a story with little substance, can easily be flipped into a success for Infantino for the simple reason that it has brought more attention to the Club World Cup. Heck, this piece itself is contributing for a caricature who seems to win even when he loses. Because rather than the potential of lop-sided games or, worse, disinterested UEFA teams, you can guarantee FIFA's breathless PR when this expensive, unloved roadshow ends in New Jersey next month will focus on other flimsy metrics that have little relation to actual football. Who needs top quality play from motivated players in a competition full of meaning and history when there are online impressions to quantify, brand deals to shout about and increasingly peculiar appearances with influencers to cultivate. The FIFA Club World Cup will see 32 of the world's best club teams including Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern Munich play across 63 games from June 14-July 13. Manager search delay shows owner's 'contempt', says Supporters' Trust

Cardiff City Supporters' Trust (CCST) has accused owner Vincent Tan of treating the club's fanbase with "contempt" over what the fans' body says is an "intolerable" delay and lack of communication over the appointment of a new had three different managers as they were relegated from the Championship this season and are now looking for a ninth boss in four Bulut was fired in September and his successor Omar Riza received his marching orders in April. Aaron Ramsey was appointed Cardiff interim manager for the final three games of the 2024-25 Championship season but was unable to keep them from club said in May that it would trial a new process to appoint the next manager, by assembling a sub-committee, and were hopeful of appointing a new boss by the end of that with the process now dragging on towards the middle of June, CCST issued a statement expressing its concern."Time is moving on, critical pre-season decisions need to be made in terms of the squad which cannot happen without a manager," read the statement."It is as long ago as 19 April that Omer Riza was relieved of his duties and 3 May was the final game of the season and it is 10 June that this communication is being written with still no sign of an appointment. "As the ultimate power within the club does Vincent Tan have a sense of urgency?"The club may say that there is no reason to panic but it is fair to say that the fanbase view the situation with some concern and anger. "That fact that there has been a deafening silence from the club has not been helpful... we are led to believe that the current state of inertia/indecision is purely down to the owner [Tan] and... [chief executive] Ken Choo."The statement continued: "This situation is intolerable and only serves to demonstrate the contempt the owner holds the fanbase in."We have no idea where we are in the process. Are the experts employed to assist in the job of finding a new manager still in the building? Are they continuing to advise? We hope they are but we just don't know."We will continue to liaise with the club to try and urge them to improve communication as fans deserve to be treated better."

Liverpool hero's agent speaks out on rumoured return to Anfield

A romantic return to Liverpool for cult hero Dirk Kuyt has been ruled out by his agent, although the former Reds forward would love to go back to Anfield. The 44-year-old joined the Reds from Feyenoord in 2006 and would go on to spend six seasons as a regular in the first team. The forward made 285 appearances in all competitions, netting 71 times, with 51 of those goals coming in the Premier League. Kuyt played with some legendary Liverpool figures, but it was not an era laden with silverware and the Dutchman left in 2012 with just one League Cup to his name. He has now moved into management, briefly taking charge of Dutch side ADO Den Haag in 2022 and having been the boss of Belgian outfit Beerschot since 2023. After the departure of Liverpool assistant John Heitinga for Ajax this summer, Kuyt had been linked with a return to Anfield as Arne Slot's new assistant. However, his agent, Rob Jansen, has dismissed that prospect, although he does feel that Kuyt would love the opportunity if it did arise. 'No, it will be a different assistant coach. That would have been great for him,' Jansen told podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp, via Voetbal Primeur. 'The assistant of Liverpool will be someone else. It would have been great for Dirk. 'He would have loved to go to Liverpool. Assistant there is of course a serious level.' Kuyt took Beerschot into the Belgian top flight in his first season in charge but things did not go well in the most recent campaign and relegation followed. Reports in the Belgian media suggest Kuyt is likely to lose his job after a return to the Challenger Pro League. Kuyt said earlier this year that Slot has already offered him the chance to be his assistant in the past. Speaking to That Peter Crouch Podcast, he said of Slot: 'I know him very well. I had the opportunity when I retired from football to become his assistant at AZ. 'I didn't choose to become his assistant which I regret of course now! But when he was at Feyenoord he gave me the opportunity to work a week alongside him to see how he's training and preparing for a game, so that was really interesting and of course I follow him very closely.' Slot will name a new assistant this summer, but who it will be is yet to become clear. More Trending The Liverpool Echo has touted the possibilities of Marino Pusic, who was Slot's assistant in previous roles at AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord. The Bosnian left his role as manager of Shakhtar Donetsk in May, so is available. Current Feyenoord assistant Etienne Reijnen has also been noted as a possibility as he was linked last year but could not move to Liverpool due to problems with his work permit.
