Meteor shower to rain over New York City this month

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — A special sight will light up the sky over New York City later this month. The annual Bootids meteor shower will rain over the five boroughs from June 22 through July 7 with peak viewing on June 27. Things To Do Around NYC During the astronomical event, at least one to two shooting stars will be visible to the naked eye every hour. Some of the best viewing spots in the city include beaches, building rooftops, and open fields in parks. Experts suggest avoiding light pollution as much as possible and looking for the shower between dusk on June 26 and dawn on June 27. More Local News After the meteor shower, New Yorkers can also look forward to seeing Mars and the crescent moon 'touching' on June 28 and June 29. Travel advisory issued as Steuben County cleans up flood damage

HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (WETM)— Cleanup efforts are taking place in Steuben County after excessive flooding and rainfall caused damage to the community. Community members say that the flooding came fast with little time to prepare. 'We had an overflow from the culvert across the street, which was quite sudden, and I was blocking doors and trying to redirect the water from coming into the house,' said Daniel Bronk, a Hammondsport Homeowner. Boating restricted on Southern Tier lakes after severe storms 'First, I got a tornado alert on my phone, and I realized the big storms are coming,' said Kim Smith, a Hammondsport homeowner. Hammondsport has experienced storms in the past, but many in the community have never seen this much flooding. 'We've had some pretty good storms, but this is the first one where it completely breached and came over the roadway,' said Bronk. Safety officials say that they are doing their best to keep people safe. Canadian wildfire smoke impacts Southern Tier air quality 'Today we're just basically working with our highway departments our emergency first responders, to try to make sure that the roads are cleared from the debris and open from the traffic,' said Tim Marshall, Steuben County Director of Public Safety. A travel advisory is still in effect, and public safety officials are asking people not to travel to the affected areas. 'Right now, the basic thing that we're trying to advise folks is to try and allow those road crews in there and get their work done, don't go out, don't sightsee today, it's not the day to be out there, kinda looking around,' said Marshall. Strong storms and flooding across the Twin Tiers. Rain stops Tuesday, but returns midweek.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Rain is back in the forecast for part of the week. So get ready for that. There is a chance to dry out but Father's Day is looking pretty wet for now. Heavy rain showers and thunderstorms continue to move into the Twin tiers this evening and into the early morning hours too. There is a cold front that moves across the region brining us localized flash flooding that could close roads at low-water crossings. The heavy rain moves eastward through the overnight hours, however, further east the rainfall rates should decrease with the loss of instability because of the loss of heat from the sun after sunset. Some spots have seen warnings for both flash flooding and thunder storms with damaging winds this evening. Locally heavy rainfall and flash flooding are still possible due to all the recent rainfall. However, we are in for a better Tuesday afternoon. Drier conditions will take hold Tuesday and hang on through at least Wednesday. Don't get used to it. There is a potent shortwave and surface cold front about to cross the region mid-week and we stand to get more showers to wrap up the week. Please remember to turn around don't drown!
