A HOLIDAYMAKER was forced to fly home for emergency surgery after she was bitten by a shark.
Rachel Smith, 26, was paddling in hip-height water off Rose Hall beach, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, when the sea creature snapped at her left hand.

She was terrified to see her ring finger was hanging off and blood was pouring from the wound.
Sister Lisa Smith, 28, saw a metre-long shark darting away - and she led Rachel to safety while shouting out a warning to other holidaymakers enjoying a morning paddle.
Pharmacologist Rachel was taken to hospital in an ambulance and medics said she needed plastic surgery.
But with no surgeon available for two weeks, the pair cut their holiday short and flew to Cork, Ireland, where their parents live.

Doctors confirmed the tendons and nerves in Rachel's ring and little fingers were ruptured, and the ligaments in her ring finger had been disconnected.
She had emergency surgery and hopes to regain full movement in 18 months time.
Lisa, a procurement specialist, and Rachel, both from Newham, London, said they have suffered with nightmares since the attack on May 8.
Rachel said: 'There was so much blood coming out I honestly thought I was going to die.
'I was in complete shock. My whole hand went numb so I thought my whole hand had been taken off.
'I feel grateful to be alive and so grateful to have my hand.
'I have a long road of recovery ahead but I have a positive attitude and I believe I will get through it.'
Lisa added: 'We were so terrified.
'I honestly thought her fingers were gone - there was blood everywhere.
'At one point a vein burst and sprayed blood all over both of us.
'We were just crying and thinking she was going to die.'
The close sisters holiday together each year and had arrived at the Hilton Rose hotel on May 5, intending to stay for two weeks.
She was attacked around 10am, and say the shark knocked them both backwards after hitting them with its body.
The sisters say the flag on the beach was raised indicating it was safe to swim and doctors confirmed the bite was likely to belong to a reef shark.
The pair were initially taken to a private hospital where they were asked to pay $2,000 to have the wounds stitched and quoted $25,000 for further surgery.
The transferred to a public hospital before heading home for surgery at Cork University Hospital.
The sisters had to pay for ambulance and taxi travel to hospitals in Jamaica, and to get a 'fit to fly' certificate to come home - totalling nearly $500.
Rachel said: 'I really did think I would die. The private hospital were only concerned with getting the payment before stopping the bleeding.'
Lisa said Rachel was bitten inside an area cordoned off as safe to swim inside, near the beach, by a rope.
'There were two young kids swimming by the rope, it's lucky it wasn't them,' she said.
'I'm just so glad and grateful that she's alive.'

Its wooden design gave it a more expensive look than your average piece of fitness equipment. While an attractive design is by far the least important factor of a treadmill review, this really stood out to me as it perfectly compliments the interior of my house and is not something I'd feel I had to hide away in the corner. In terms of being portable, I thought this treadmill was fantastic for transporting from one room to the next. The machine's two front wheels made it a lot easier for me to move around by myself. While I have so many good things to say, the treadmill itself lacks a few additional features which some people may be interested in having. It is a very basic design, lacking a bar or a stand to place your phone or any other belongings you'd like to easily access, which is something that other similar products appear to have. However, the simplicity of this walking pad does make it more lightweight and easier to store which is of course a bonus. Because there is no bar that comes with this machine, there is also no clip on safety belt. So anyone using this device, needs to be extra careful about the speed settings they are choosing. I am aware that the absence of these added features does make the machine easier to fold away and store, which is personally a must for my living situation, so it really depends on what kind of walking pad you are shopping for. Is it worth it? Overall, I am very pleased with my new walking pad. After several weeks of using it regularly, I am impressed with the smooth operation of the pad and am also feeling a lot better for it as it has helped to transformed my fitness journey, motivating me to hit my personal exercise goals. Daughter remembers Dundee church deacon who baptised his youngest grandchild just 5 days before he died
The daughter of a Dundee church deacon has told how he was able to baptise his youngest grandchild just five days before he died from cancer. Charles Hendry died one day before his 67th birthday on July 4 2024, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The retired nurse, senior lecturer, and deacon was a father of five and had 17 grandchildren. He baptised his youngest grandchild while at Roxburghe House hospice just five days before his death. Now his daughter, Rachel Smith, has remembered Charles as she prepares to honour his memory. Rachel said: 'He kept going, even when his health was failing. 'He had haemochromatosis, diabetes, chronic fatigue, arthritis, yet he still baptised his youngest grandchild just five days before he passed, in the sanctuary room at Roxburgh House hospice. 'He made each of his seventeen grandchildren feel special. 'He was the kind of man who really listened. He was always there for us.' Charles retired early at age 52 due to his health, but remained active in the community and through his work as a deacon at St Peter and Paul's Church in Dundee. Rachel said: 'His faith was so important to him. He loved helping people, whether it was through the church or his work in nursing.' She described how her parents met while working in Ward 3 at Ninewells Hospital. Rachel is also now a nurse, and met her husband on the same ward. She said: 'My dad was a staff nurse, and my mum (Shona) was a student nurse. That's where it all began. 'It's kind of beautiful, really. Nursing is in our blood, you could say.' Charles later earned a PhD and became a senior lecturer of nursing and midwifery at Dundee University. However, Rachel said his proudest achievement was raising his family. His eldest daughter, Sarah, is a head teacher, while his younger children Ruth and Katherine work in education support and cyber security respectively. The youngest in the family, James, is a staff nurse in the emergency department at Ninewells. Rachel said: 'He was so proud of us all. 'Especially when we followed in his footsteps. 'Even if we didn't choose nursing, he saw the values of care and service in all of us. 'Sometimes I can talk about him like it's just a story. 'Like I'm giving a report. Other times, it just hits me out of nowhere and I break down.' Rachel and Ruth are walking more than 80 miles across Scotland in memory of their dad. The sisters will be taking part in all four of this year's Kiltwalk events to raise funds for the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action. Charles received a late diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and died soon after. Rachel said: 'We didn't know what we were facing until it was too late. 'Pancreatic cancer is so hard to diagnose early, and that makes it incredibly cruel. 'We had very little time to prepare or ask questions.' She added: 'We wanted to honour our dad in a way that reflected who he was, someone who never gave up, someone who cared deeply. 'This is our way of keeping his memory alive and making sure other families get the chance we didn't, to catch this disease earlier, to have more time.' Pancreatic Cancer Action says the disease is known as a 'silent killer' due to its easily overlooked symptoms. The charity says 44% of cases are diagnosed in A&E, where it is often too late for curative treatment. Just 10% of patients are diagnosed in time for life-saving surgery. Common symptoms include persistent indigestion or heartburn, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and jaundice.
