SHARK TERROR Brit mauled in water by SHARK watched 'blood pour everywhere' & thought she was going to die in horror holiday attack
A HOLIDAYMAKER was forced to fly home for emergency surgery after she was bitten by a shark.
Rachel Smith, 26, was paddling in hip-height water off Rose Hall beach, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, when the sea creature snapped at her left hand.

She was terrified to see her ring finger was hanging off and blood was pouring from the wound.
Sister Lisa Smith, 28, saw a metre-long shark darting away - and she led Rachel to safety while shouting out a warning to other holidaymakers enjoying a morning paddle.
Pharmacologist Rachel was taken to hospital in an ambulance and medics said she needed plastic surgery.
But with no surgeon available for two weeks, the pair cut their holiday short and flew to Cork, Ireland, where their parents live.

Doctors confirmed the tendons and nerves in Rachel's ring and little fingers were ruptured, and the ligaments in her ring finger had been disconnected.
She had emergency surgery and hopes to regain full movement in 18 months time.
Lisa, a procurement specialist, and Rachel, both from Newham, London, said they have suffered with nightmares since the attack on May 8.
Rachel said: 'There was so much blood coming out I honestly thought I was going to die.
'I was in complete shock. My whole hand went numb so I thought my whole hand had been taken off.
'I feel grateful to be alive and so grateful to have my hand.
'I have a long road of recovery ahead but I have a positive attitude and I believe I will get through it.'
Lisa added: 'We were so terrified.
'I honestly thought her fingers were gone - there was blood everywhere.
'At one point a vein burst and sprayed blood all over both of us.
'We were just crying and thinking she was going to die.'
The close sisters holiday together each year and had arrived at the Hilton Rose hotel on May 5, intending to stay for two weeks.
She was attacked around 10am, and say the shark knocked them both backwards after hitting them with its body.
The sisters say the flag on the beach was raised indicating it was safe to swim and doctors confirmed the bite was likely to belong to a reef shark.
The pair were initially taken to a private hospital where they were asked to pay $2,000 to have the wounds stitched and quoted $25,000 for further surgery.
The transferred to a public hospital before heading home for surgery at Cork University Hospital.
The sisters had to pay for ambulance and taxi travel to hospitals in Jamaica, and to get a 'fit to fly' certificate to come home - totalling nearly $500.
Rachel said: 'I really did think I would die. The private hospital were only concerned with getting the payment before stopping the bleeding.'
Lisa said Rachel was bitten inside an area cordoned off as safe to swim inside, near the beach, by a rope.
'There were two young kids swimming by the rope, it's lucky it wasn't them,' she said.
'I'm just so glad and grateful that she's alive.'

Dad-of-two placed into coma after Turkey holiday as chef, 55, ‘caught rare disease from dirty 4-star hotel'

The dad began suffering severe flu-like symptoms and was rushed to hospital HOLS HORROR Dad-of-two placed into coma after Turkey holiday as chef, 55, 'caught rare disease from dirty 4-star hotel' A DAD-OF-TWO has claimed he nearly died after contracting a rare disease from a "dirty" 4-star hotel. Richard Moore, 55, began to suffer from a fever and chest pains after returning from a holiday in Turkey with partner Julie, 50. 6 Richard's family was told he may not survive the harrowing ordeal Credit: SWNS 6 Richard had to be placed into an induced coma Credit: SWNS Richard, a chef, became so ill that he had to be rushed to hospital and placed into an induced coma. His wife and kids were told by medical staff that he may not survive the ordeal. Doctors confirmed he was suffering from potentially deadly Legionnaires' disease, Richard needed five days of intense hospital treatment which included antibiotics and an IV drip. Richard, of Blyth, Northumberland, said: "This holiday was meant to be a short break before I started a new job as an executive chef. "Instead, it cost me my dream job, my health and very nearly my life. "As a result of the memory loss, I can't recall much of my time in hospital, but when I was admitted, I remember the fear and not knowing what was wrong. "I'm lucky to be alive but it's so upsetting to think my family were told I might not live. "I never realised Legionnaires' disease was so serious and I want to tell my story to make other people aware of the symptoms and the dangers. "I wouldn't want to think that other people were going off on a holiday unaware of what they could be walking into. "If there are issues with the hotel then that needs looking at urgently. Mum who nearly died after falling sick in Spain issues warning after anti-sickness pills left her 'acting possessed' "I feel fortunate to have pulled through. However, I do worry that someone else might not be as lucky as I was." Richard and his family paid £2,000 to stay at the four-star Champion Holiday Village in Kemer, Turkey. After arriving at the hotel on August 18 last year, Richard said he thought the hotel was dirty, old and dated. He also noticed that the room felt damp and had a grim fusty smell. 6 He suffered serious flu-like symptoms after returning from his holiday Credit: SWNS 6 Richard was unable to start at a new job because of the illness Credit: SWNS He said: "I can't specifically pinpoint to one thing but the water temperature fluctuated a lot in the shower. "The bathroom and hotel generally looked run down and the sofa in hotel room beneath the air con felt damp throughout the holiday which made me think it was leaking." Days after returning to the UK, Richard began suffering from severe flu-like symptoms. On August 30 he developed chest pains, a shortness of breath and a fever and was rushed to hospital for treatment. He spent a whole month in hospital and has been unable to start at his new job as an executive chef. Richard still struggles with lethargy, weakness and mobility issues linked to Legionnaires' disease. He has now instructed travel illness lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the cause of his Legionnaires' disease. 6 Richard visited Champion Holiday Village in Kemer, Turkey Credit: Champion Holiday Village 6 Richard is now having lawyers investigate the cause of his illness Credit: SWNS Jennifer Hodgson, representing Richard, said: "Richard's first-hand account of his experience at the hotel and contracting his illness is deeply disturbing. "Legionnaires' disease is an incredibly serious condition, and it can take several days from coming into contact with Legionella bacteria before symptoms of the illness start to appear. "As Richard has since discovered, the effects of the disease can be long-term. "Nothing can make up for the impact the illness has had and continues to have on Richard, but we're determined to provide him with the answers and specialist support he deserves. "Public buildings, such as hotels and offices, can have complex water systems, so it's vital that all precautions are taken to prevent the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease developing. "As part of our work and to assist with our investigations, we would be keen to hear from anyone else who may also have been affected by illness whilst staying at the Champion Holiday Village Hotel, Turkey."

'I tested the UREVO Spacewalk smart treadmill - it has transformed my fitness goals'

The Daily Record's Nicola Croal tested out the device at home and says it ticks every walking pad box. Walking pads have become very popular in recent years alongside the fitness trend of getting in your 10,000 steps a day, as society as a whole appears to be focusing more on health and wellbeing. This push to be more active can of course only be seen in a positive light, but making more of a conscious effort to exercise doesn't need to come in the form of marathons or gruelling Hyrox challenges. Infact, walking itself is a very underrated, low impact exercise that is known to not only improve cardiovascular health and build stamina but also greatly improve your mental health. The NHS recommends taking daily brisk walks due to the excellent health benefits it brings. However it's been revealed that the average Brit only walks between 3,000 and 4,000 steps a day. This statistic is understandable as the average person takes around 90-100 minutes per day to walk 10k steps and for many, that is simply not possible to incorporate into their busy daily routines. For busy parents, those who work non-active jobs, or anyone who simply lives in the UK where the weather is not pleasant enough most of the time to be outside, finding 1.5 hours each day to go for a walk is likely to be almost impossible. However, that's where the handy walking pad comes in. For those who are keen to be more active but are struggling to find the time to do it, listen up because this could be a game changer. Sure, shoppers could just pay for a monthly gym membership and use a treadmill there or they could just go for a walk or run outside for free. However, does that really beat having a personal machine at home that can be used whenever or wherever within the property and also allows users the flexibility of multitasking at work and in their free time while exercising? As someone who does work a non active job, The Daily Record's Nicola Croal personally find it difficult to incorporate movement into my working hours while I sit behind a screen for most of the day. However, she has now discovered she can actually do both working and walking at once thanks to the UREVO SpaceWalk E4W Smart Walking Pad, which has been branded as an 'ideal machine for home and office use' in its glowing reviews. Priced at £249.99 including delivery on the UREVO website and on Amazon, new customers can snatch up the device for £237.50 in a summer sale discount. This price includes a 30 day money back guarantee and two years warranty on the product. The UREVO Space Walk E4W Smart Walking Pad is a remote controlled portable treadmill, offering a 38 x 102cm large track which you can either walk or run on. The machine, which boasts five star reviews, caters to various fitness levels offering adjustable speeds from 1-6km/h, which can be managed with the magnetic remote control that attaches to the side of the treadmill or with the UREVO app. Despite its power, the UREVO Smart Walking Pad promises a quiet experience, operating at less than 45dB, meaning you can exercise anywhere without worrying about disturbing what you are doing or others. The easy to use LED screen clearly displays the time, steps, speed and distance, allowing you to check on your exercise data at just a glance. With a 4.8-star rating, the Smoture VAC02 has become a popular buy among homeowners, with praise for its "lightweight" design and "excellent" suction power. One five-star review read: "Without a doubt the best hoover I have owned. Really picks up on both carpet and hard floors. Battery lasts for me to get round the whole house. I actually enjoy using this hoover and highly recommend taking into account everything alongside price." Someone else said: "An absolute bargain. Wasn't expecting it to be as good as it is. The pad itself is equipped with five layers of the anti-slip belt, 8 silicone shock absorbers, and two soft rubber pads. These features not only provide you with a comfortable exercise experience, but also effectively reducing joint impact and protecting your knees. Fitness fans who are looking for a cheaper exercise option may want to consider the Neo Under Desk Portable Walking Pad Treadmill, currently on sale for £121.87 from £162.49 ad Debenhams. If your looking for a bigger option, Argos currently stocks the Reebok Jet 100z Folding Treadmill with Connected Fitness for £478. Its slim yet robust wooden structure supports up to 265lbs and the pad can not only be easily transported around due to its front two wheels, but also is easily stored under desks, beds and even sofas. However, what really sets this walking pad aside from others is it's smart features. The treadmill can be connected to the UREVO Smart Coach app, where you can take a run or a stroll in real life city maps around the world. While using this mode, the app also adjusts speed and incline, tailoring your workout for you and making your fitness journey fun and immersive. In addition to this, you can also access four exercise modes including free training, goal workout, immersive running or challenge mode where you can race against friends on the leaderboard. With all these fantastic features in mind, Nicola decided to trial the walking pad for herself. Below are her honest thoughts. What I liked When the UREVO Space Walk E4W Smart Walking Pad arrived, already fully assembled may I add, the first thing that impressed me was how aesthetically pleasing it looked. Its wooden design gave it a more expensive look than your average piece of fitness equipment. While an attractive design is by far the least important factor of a treadmill review, this really stood out to me as it perfectly compliments the interior of my house and is not something I'd feel I had to hide away in the corner. In terms of being portable, I thought this treadmill was fantastic for transporting from one room to the next. The machine's two front wheels made it a lot easier for me to move around by myself. However, do be aware that this handy feature doesn't mean the machine itself is lightweight. I still needed help getting the walking pad in the house and out of its packaging. I am by no means a tech guru - anything with too many remote control buttons can often put me off - but I was pleased to say that the remote control operated screen is very straightforward and user friendly. Your speed and incline can also be adjusted through the app which is handy. During my working hours, I gave the UREVO pad a go and was delighted to see it fit perfectly underneath my height adjustable desk, allowing me to practice the art of typing on my laptop and walking at the same time - a skill I am admittedly yet to master. This was definitely made easier by the quiet nature of the walking pad, with the remote control also offering a mute button which switches off any beeps from the machine. However, one skill I have definitely already perfected is the Netflix show x walking pad combo. As someone, who can sometimes feel guilty for sitting down and catching up on my favourite TV show without really doing anything that is deemed as productive, this is a really great way for me to enjoy my favourite show whilst also being active at the same time. And of course I have also tried out a jog through the real world city maps on the UREVO app, which can be downloaded on app stores. To enhance this immersive experience, I mirrored my phone to the TV and chose my maps from there. Being able to virtually run through Central Park in New York or take a stroll through the Alps is very cool and easily kept me entertained for a good few hours as each map is between 30-60 minutes long. I also liked that it showed me how many calories I was burning on the screen throughout my workout which is good motivation to keep going! What do I think could be improved? While I have so many good things to say, the treadmill itself lacks a few additional features which some people may be interested in having. It is a very basic design, lacking a bar or a stand to place your phone or any other belongings you'd like to easily access, which is something that other similar products appear to have. However, the simplicity of this walking pad does make it more lightweight and easier to store which is of course a bonus. Because there is no bar that comes with this machine, there is also no clip on safety belt. So anyone using this device, needs to be extra careful about the speed settings they are choosing. I am aware that the absence of these added features does make the machine easier to fold away and store, which is personally a must for my living situation, so it really depends on what kind of walking pad you are shopping for. Is it worth it? Overall, I am very pleased with my new walking pad. After several weeks of using it regularly, I am impressed with the smooth operation of the pad and am also feeling a lot better for it as it has helped to transformed my fitness journey, motivating me to hit my personal exercise goals. Although it is not the cheapest of products, the price of UREVO Space Walk E4W Smart Walking Pad is definitely reflected in its high quality features and smart technology. I would recommend that it is worth the buy if you are serious about upping your daily step count and your general fitness. Personally, I know I am going to make good use of it and am already thinking ahead to the winter months when it's dark and gloomy outside and I will be able to make use of the treadmill instead of braving the cold and the dark evenings.

Daughter remembers Dundee church deacon who baptised his youngest grandchild just 5 days before he died

The daughter of a Dundee church deacon has told how he was able to baptise his youngest grandchild just five days before he died from cancer. Charles Hendry died one day before his 67th birthday on July 4 2024, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The retired nurse, senior lecturer, and deacon was a father of five and had 17 grandchildren. He baptised his youngest grandchild while at Roxburghe House hospice just five days before his death. Now his daughter, Rachel Smith, has remembered Charles as she prepares to honour his memory. Rachel said: 'He kept going, even when his health was failing. 'He had haemochromatosis, diabetes, chronic fatigue, arthritis, yet he still baptised his youngest grandchild just five days before he passed, in the sanctuary room at Roxburgh House hospice. 'He made each of his seventeen grandchildren feel special. 'He was the kind of man who really listened. He was always there for us.' Charles retired early at age 52 due to his health, but remained active in the community and through his work as a deacon at St Peter and Paul's Church in Dundee. Rachel said: 'His faith was so important to him. He loved helping people, whether it was through the church or his work in nursing.' She described how her parents met while working in Ward 3 at Ninewells Hospital. Rachel is also now a nurse, and met her husband on the same ward. She said: 'My dad was a staff nurse, and my mum (Shona) was a student nurse. That's where it all began. 'It's kind of beautiful, really. Nursing is in our blood, you could say.' Charles later earned a PhD and became a senior lecturer of nursing and midwifery at Dundee University. However, Rachel said his proudest achievement was raising his family. His eldest daughter, Sarah, is a head teacher, while his younger children Ruth and Katherine work in education support and cyber security respectively. The youngest in the family, James, is a staff nurse in the emergency department at Ninewells. Rachel said: 'He was so proud of us all. 'Especially when we followed in his footsteps. 'Even if we didn't choose nursing, he saw the values of care and service in all of us. 'Sometimes I can talk about him like it's just a story. 'Like I'm giving a report. Other times, it just hits me out of nowhere and I break down.' Rachel and Ruth are walking more than 80 miles across Scotland in memory of their dad. The sisters will be taking part in all four of this year's Kiltwalk events to raise funds for the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action. Charles received a late diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and died soon after. Rachel said: 'We didn't know what we were facing until it was too late. 'Pancreatic cancer is so hard to diagnose early, and that makes it incredibly cruel. 'We had very little time to prepare or ask questions.' She added: 'We wanted to honour our dad in a way that reflected who he was, someone who never gave up, someone who cared deeply. 'This is our way of keeping his memory alive and making sure other families get the chance we didn't, to catch this disease earlier, to have more time.' Pancreatic Cancer Action says the disease is known as a 'silent killer' due to its easily overlooked symptoms. The charity says 44% of cases are diagnosed in A&E, where it is often too late for curative treatment. Just 10% of patients are diagnosed in time for life-saving surgery. Common symptoms include persistent indigestion or heartburn, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and jaundice.
