Box Office: ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Clobbers $57 Million Opening Day — Second-Biggest of the Year
It also just edges out Marvel Studios' comic book banner rival, DC Studios' 'Superman,' which began with a $56.1 million opening day just two weeks ago. It'll be a close call on whether 'Fantastic Four' can keep pacing ahead to beat the $125 million three-day opening of 'Superman.'

It's the best first day kick-off for a Marvel Cinematic Universe entry since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' dominated the box office 12 months ago. And like that R-rated smash, 'Fantastic Four' is based on Marvel characters that were acquired by Disney after the studio's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, demonstrating some value to that $71 billion merger. Three previous big-budget 'Fantastic Four' entries were produced at Fox, from 2005 to 2015. (There was also an unreleased 1994 feature, spearheaded by Roger Corman as a means to retain film rights for German producers. It circulates among diehards.)
With a story that has little connection to other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' has presented itself as a relatively fresh entry point to audiences. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who lead the film as Marvel's first family, are all MCU newcomers. 'First Steps' also has the benefit of strong reviews and good audience sentiment (pollster Cinema Score turned in an 'A-' grade among ticketbuyers).
At a production cost of $200 million, plus much more to market and distribute, the film will need to hold as one of the biggest grossers of the year to turn a profit in theaters. Marvel's two previous 2025 releases, 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Thunderbolts*,' launched to $88.5 million and $76 million respectively. Both ended up losing money theatrically.
Disney hopes to gain some momentum with the Matt Shakman-directed 'Fantastic Four,' ahead of the studio's extensive hiatus from superhero films. Marvel is producing 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' the fourth Tom Holland-led entry set to release July 2026. But Sony is distributing that film. Disney will have nearly a year and a half to plan for its next MCU installment, the mega-team-up 'Avengers: Doomsday,' set for December 2026.
Second place goes to Warner Bros.' 'Superman,' which added $7.1 million on Friday. It's down 57% from its daily total a week ago, now competing with a newer superhero spectacle. The cinematic universe-rebooter should fly to a $289 million domestic total after its third weekend, which will put it ahead of 'Sinners' ($278 million) to have it rank as the fourth-highest grossing North American release of the year.
Universal's 'Jurassic World Rebirth' is sliding to third in its fourth weekend, adding another $3.6 million on Friday. The seventh entry in the dinosaur series is projecting $13 million for its fourth weekend, which would be another good hold at a 45% drop. Total domestic gross is expected to pass $301 million through Sunday — only the third release of 2025 to get into the triple hundreds.
Fourth looks to go to 'F1.' Warner Bros.' release of Apple Studios' racing thriller added $1.8 million Friday, down just 37% from its daily total a week ago. At a production cost of $250 million, theatrical profitability is a questionable prospect at best for the Brad Pitt-led feature. But it has put up strong holds since debuting a month ago. The film looks to hit a $165 million domestic total through Sunday.
Paramount's IP revival 'Smurfs' rounds out the top five, adding $1.72 million on Friday and projecting $5.6 million for its second weekend. After a low opening, that's a 49% second-weekend drop, showing some relative staying power as the only new animated offering to families. Domestic total will hit $22.9 million through the first 10 days — a disappointing result against a $58 million production budget.

If you have to watch one Netflix movie in August 2025, stream this one
There are few absolutely perfect comedies. In some ways, making a comedy movie is harder than any other genre, especially as the years pass and any particular references start to feel more and more stale. That's what makes Clueless feel a little bit like a miracle. This Amy Heckerling classic, which is turning 30 this year, is one of the best comedies ever made, and an absolute must-watch whether you've seen it 30 times or never before. An adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma set in Beverly Hills in 1995, the movie is both totally of its time and utterly timeless. Here are three reasons it's worth checking out: It's so, so funny The best reason to watch Clueless is because it is one of the funniest scripts ever written. Heckerling, who wrote the film in addition to directing it, made Alicia Silverstone's Cher an instantly iconic character. Silverstone's Cher is a privileged popular girl, but she's textured to be something more engrossing, which makes her funnier. Recommended Videos It's different than the stereotypes you might be expecting. Every minute of this movie has a great joke in it, and you're going to catch and laugh at different ones every time. 'I thought they declared peace in the Middle East.' If only, Cher. It's a lush, beautiful movie Comedy movies typically don't get the kind of directorial flair that you might find in more serious projects, but Clueless is the perfect marriage of laughs and craft. The movie's iconic costuming — you can probably picture several outfits from the movie without thinking that hard — is just an exaggeration of how kids were actually dressing at the time. The colors themselves are also incredibly vibrant, creating a version of Beverly Hills that feels like a middle ground between utter fantasy and the dreariness of something more realistic. It's genuinely moving Perhaps the most surprising thing about Clueless is that the movie manages to land all of its emotional moments. Cher's character arc is a relatively small journey. Cher goes from being slightly narcissistic to caring a little bit more about other people and the world in general. What's crucial to the movie's success is that lack of 'bad guys.' All of these characters are just young people trying to figure out how to get through their lives and high school without totally falling apart. Cher's realization that she's in love with her stepbrother is cute and represents a moment when she finally figures out what she wants out of her life. It's a lovely moment, and one that Silverstone and Paul Rudd totally sell. You can watch Clueless on Netflix.

Pat McAfee calls out 'bum a-- suits' at ESPN while congratulating network's WWE deal
Pat McAfee is happy to see ESPN and the WWE get a historic deal done to broadcast premium live events. But the ESPN host called out some employees within his own company in the process. McAfee posted on X congratulating ESPN and WWE on finalizing a deal, which was announced Wednesday. "Great to see 2 powerhouses of sports and entertainment come together," McAfee wrote before taking his shot. "I assume all the mid level, powerless, bum a--suits at ESPN will attempt to muddy this somehow (out of context leaks/ignorant anonymous opinions/etc.) but, in the end.. this agreement will outlive the dinosaurs currently guarding desks in Bristol and this deal will be great for ESPN. "Cheers to the future." McAfee has had issues in the past with ESPN executives, which could've led to his jab. He accused Norby Williamson on air, saying the longtime executive tried to "sabotage" his show in 2024. Williamson ended up moving on to FanDuel Sports Network after spending 40 years at the "Worldwide Leader in Sports." The WWE-ESPN deal has been reported to be worth $1.6 billion over five years. This will allow ESPN to broadcast some of the most anticipated WWE events each year, like WrestleMania, Summer Slam and the Royal Rumble as part of the pro wrestling giant's direct-to-consumer service launching in late August. McAfee is a big wrestling fan, having served as a commentator for the WWE. However, he stepped away from that earlier this year due to a busy schedule. But he is clearly aware of the deal, and he has never shied away from speaking his mind even after joining ESPN on a five-year, $85 million deal. "I don't got a motherf---ing boss," he said in the past. ESPN made another landmark deal in the world of sports. The network announced Tuesday it acquired the NFL Network in a deal that gave the league a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The deal includes the NFL's linear RedZone Channel, NFL Fantasy and more.
