Operation Sindoor delivered a strong message on security: Amit Shah

The Hindu3 days ago
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday (July 17, 2025) that India had sent an 'unambiguous' message to the world that any attempt to harm its citizens would invite retaliation. 'In contrast, the country faced terror attacks almost every day during Congress rule,' he said.
Mr. Shah, who also holds the Cooperative portfolio in the Union Cabinet, was addressing a cooperative and employment festival, marking International Cooperatives Year-2025, at Dadiya village near Jaipur. He referred to Operation Sindoor, affirming that it had eliminated terrorists based in Pakistan.
'When the Uri attack occurred, [Prime Minister] Narendra Modi took decisive action by carrying out the surgical strike. After the Pulwama attack, an airstrike was ordered. After the attack in Pahalgam, Operation Sindoor was sanctioned, which targeted terrorists across the border,' Mr. Shah said.
Fourth largest economy
Mr. Shah said the country had become the fourth largest economy under Mr. Modi's leadership, while 22 crore people had been lifted above the poverty line. The vision of a 'prosperous and secure nation' had been turned into a reality under the present dispensation, he added.
Meanwhile, veteran Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday asked Mr. Shah to clarify why the trial in Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal's murder case was not making headway after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the matter. Two cleaver-wielding men had murdered Mr. Lal in June 2022, when Mr. Gehlot was the CM.
Mr. Gehlot said at a press conference here, ahead of Mr. Shah's address at the event, that though the State police had apprehended the accused within four hours of the incident, NIA took over the case overnight. 'Three years later, even the statements [of witnesses] have not been recorded in the court,' he said.
CM Sharma praised
Mr. Shah praised Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for launching public welfare and development works and said the BJP government in the State had taken strong action against paper leaks in recruitment exams by forming a Special Investigation Team.
He also pointed to the cooperative sector's contribution to development and said it was playing an active role in 98% of rural areas. The Ministry of Cooperation had launched 61 initiatives in the last four years to strengthen the sector, he said.
Mr. Shah flagged off 100 new police vehicles, visited an exhibition of cooperative products, and distributed appointment letters to youths selected for government jobs. He also virtually inaugurated 24 food grain storage warehouses and 64 millet outlets on the occasion.
Besides the CM Mr. Sharma, Union Minister of Culture & Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Deputy CMs Prem Chand Bairwa and Diya Kumari, and former CM Vasundhara Raje were also present.

AI-based facial identification to track sex abusers at railway stations

Representational Image NEW DELHI: The Union govt has informed SC that it plans to set up Artificial Intelligence-based facial recognition systems at seven major railway stations, including Mumbai CST and New Delhi, to curb crimes against women. The number of sexual offenders recorded in the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO) has crossed the 20-lakh mark, it further told the court. Responding to serious concerns raised, through a PIL, by Supreme Court Women Lawyers' Association over the rise in crimes against women, the ministry of home affairs (MHA), in an affidavit, detailed the steps being taken to address the issue and said apart from railway stations, safe city projects have been implemented in eight cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Lucknow - by local police and municipal corporations. The projects focus on improving safety infrastructure by installing CCTV cameras with facial recognition or automatic number plate recognition, alongside smart lighting systems, and use of drones to monitor high-risk areas, the Centre said. A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant is scheduled to hear the PIL on Monday. The ministry said: "The Integrated Emergency Response Management System (IERMS) has been made operational in 499 out of 983 major railway stations, ensuring 24X7 security for women passengers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Launch at Godrej Sector 12 | Luxurious 3 BHK + S & 4 BHK Homes @₹2.90 Cr* Godrej Majesty Learn More Undo Additionally, the Konkan Railway Network has benefited from the installation of 740 CCTV cameras across 67 stations, with plans to expand further using Al-based facial recognition systems at seven major stations, including Mumbai CST and New Delhi". The MHA said NDSO data includes names, addresses, photographs and fingerprint details of individuals involved in sexual offences like rape, gangrape, eve teasing, stalking, and child abuse. As of date, it has 20.28 lakh entries available for use by all police stations and law-enforcement agencies in the country through the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS). However, the women lawyers' association, represented by senior advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, said additional measures are required as National Crime Records Bureau statistics show a spike in crimes against women from 58.8 per lakh in 2018 to 66.4 per lakh in 2022. In a rejoinder to the Centre's affidavit, Pavani said, "In 2022, there were 23.66 lakh cases of crime against women pending trial, of which only 1.5 lakh were decided in 2022 and only 38,136 ended in conviction". The association said, "Introduction of technology-based projects like Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), Crime Multi Agency Centre (Cr-MAC), NDSO, Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offenders (ITSSO), Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to improve and make the criminal justice system efficient are not making a big difference".

Police recover stolen tractor from Hry after Cong MLA's complaint

1 2 Jaipur: Nearly two weeks after a tractor trolley was allegedly stolen from the residence of Dausa Congress MLA Deen Dayal Bairwa in Dausa, police recovered the vehicle from Haryana Saturday. A car used by the suspects involved in the theft was also seized, but the thieves managed to escape and have not yet been arrested. Police searched for the tractor trolley after the legislator took to X on July 7 and claimed that he was targeted by thieves three times in a month. Bairwa said that first his mobile phone was stolen, then a motorcycle from his home, and finally, a tractor trolley was taken. A police officer, however, clarified that the MLA was not the owner of the tractor trolley and it was not parked inside his residence. "The tractor belonged to Fateh Singh Gurjar, a resident of the Bassi area in Jaipur. He filed a complaint about the vehicle theft that occurred on July 6, after which teams were formed to trace it," the officer said. According to police, CCTV footage and technical investigation helped track the vehicle to Palwal district in Haryana. Raids were carried out at the location where the tractor trolley was being hidden, but the suspects managed to escape. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A car was seized from the spot during the operation. The officer added that the MLA had no direct connection with the theft other than the fact that it occurred near his residence. Following the series of incidents, Bairwa posted on X, writing, "In Dausa, thieves are becoming more daring, and the police seem to be just a name. The theft of my mobile on June 11, the motorcycle from my residence on June 14, and now the tractor trolley last night raises questions about law and order. I urge the police to take swift action." After Bairwa's post, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully also criticised the state govt over the situation.

Leaders pay tribute to ex-CM Sheila Dikshit on 6th death anniversary

Cutting across party lines, senior leaders such as Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal, and Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav, paid tributes to the longest-serving Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit, on her sixth death anniversary on Sunday. 'Humble tribute on the death anniversary of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshitji,' Ms. Gupta wrote on X. In a post on the social media platform, Mr. Kejriwal said, 'On the death anniversary of Delhi's former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, I pay my homage to her.' Mr. Yadav, along with several Congress leaders and workers, paid floral tributes to Dikshit at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee office. Attacking the BJP and AAP on the occasion, he said the welfare schemes introduced by Dikshit for slum dwellers, street vendors, Dalits, minorities, and the marginalised have nearly been shut down by the former AAP government and the present BJP regime. 'Delhi had witnessed massive development when the Congress government, headed by Dikshit, was in power for 15 years and came to be known as the golden era of Delhi. The Delhi metro, flyovers, underpasses, CNG fleet of public transport, including DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation), well-paved roads, modern hospitals, new universities, colleges, and schools, and green cover changed the face of the Capital,' he said. Mr. Yadav said the people of Delhi still remember Dikshit for the 'unprecedented development works carried out' during her tenure as the CM.
