The Phillies and the art of not rushing prospects
This fits in nicely with another long-existing narrative about the Phillies: They are too slow to promote their prospects.

If you press anyone who makes a claim that the Phillies are always slow to promote prospects, the first names you'll hear are Ryan Howard and Chase Utley.
Howard and Utley came though the Phillies' system over 20 years and four general managers ago. They were also drafted out of college which by nature will lead to older debuts. Most importantly, both were blocked at the major league level by good players (Placido Polanco and Jim Thome).
Even then, the Phillies did promote some of their prospects at younger ages. During that era, Brett Myers was called up at age 21, Cole Hamels at 22, and Jimmy Rollins at 21.
Now that we've covered guys from a generation ago, are there any examples of the Phillies recently taking too long to promote players? Bohm and Bryson Stott were on the older side when they reached the big leagues, but not egregiously so. Also, both were college players, and COVID helped delay their timelines.

Perhaps there's a case that once they reached the majors, some of the younger players didn't get much playing time in favor of veterans, but that was more of a Joe Girardi issue, and one of the reasons he was fired.
It would be great if the Phillies could call up a teenage wunderkind like Juan Soto or Ronald Acuna, Jr, but those players are rare. It certainly seemed like the team was going to start the 2023 season with a 19-year-old Andrew Painter on the roster before he suffered an injury.
The real conversation isn't that the Phillies have been too conservative with promoting player, but rather that they haven't had many young prospects good enough to be called up. Let's hope that the current group of prospects like Aidan Miller and Eduardo Tait can earn quick promotions, and we can help put an end to the narrative.

Jerry Jones: Parsons offer would make him highest-paid non-QB in guaranteed money
Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that he's confident Micah Parsons will be on the field Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Judging by Jerry Jones' comments Thursday, there's a good chance that's without a new contract. While joining former Cowboys star wide receiver Michael Irvin on his YouTube channel, the Cowboys owner and general manager sounded completely committed to not renegotiating what he believes was already negotiated back in March with Parsons. Jones said the offer would have made the All-Pro pass rusher the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback in guaranteed money. Advertisement 'The world would know that I want Micah if they knew what I had offered him,' Jones told Irvin. 'And he knows what I offered him.' Jones and Parsons met back in March and negotiated without Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta, being present. Jones said Thursday that when they sent the contract details over, 'the agent told us to stick it up our ass.' Parsons, who requested a trade Aug. 1, is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie deal. His 2025 salary is just over $24 million. The NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback in terms of average annual value is Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt at $41 million per year. Last month, he signed a three-year, $123 million contract extension with $108 million guaranteed, the most guaranteed money by a non-quarterback. When Parsons posted his trade request on X, his statement said, 'I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present.' Parsons included details about the March meeting, writing that it was about leadership. 'Somehow the conversation turned into him talking contract with me,' Parsons added. 'Yes I engaged in a back and forth in regards to what I wanted from my contract, but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation and I informed Mr. Jones afterward my agent would reach out thinking this would get things done.' Jones continued to explain Thursday that Parsons is under contract for this season and the Cowboys have the ability to franchise tag him the next two seasons. The franchise tag number for a defensive end this season is $22 million. According to the projected franchise tag number for a defensive end next season will be a little over $26.5 million. 'We really got three years to work this thing out,' Jones said, before explaining how he did the same thing with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who is the NFL's highest-paid player at $60 million per season. 'We couldn't agree so Dak played the last year of his contract and then we franchised him. It's exactly what happened with Dak, so we moved forward and ultimately we got a contact, made Dak the highest-paid player in the NFL. So the precedent is handling it like Dak. Advertisement 'But in this particular case, then Micah comes in and plays this year under his contract. If he doesn't, then it's very costly, very costly for everybody.' Parsons has been attending training camp practices, taking part in the walk-through portions and meetings. But he has not been practicing. And judging by Jones' comments' Thursday, it doesn't sound like he will be the one making the first call. We were going to send it over to the agent, and the agent said don't bother because we have all that to negotiate. Well, I had already negotiated. I already moved off my mark in several areas. So the issue, very frankly, is we've had the negotiation in my mind. And the agent is trying to get his nose in it right now and try to come in there and improve off the mark that we had already set. 'We've got this deal resolved in my mind, for the Dallas Cowboys. We've got it done. And if the agent wants to finish up the details, which he should, and do all the paperwork, he can do that. And we're ready to go. But as far as the amount of money, the years, the guarantees, all of that, we've negotiated that.' NBA Legend Shaquille O'Neal Had Words for Dwight Howard
Earlier in 2025, the NBA had confirmed that Dwight Howard would be among the players inducted into the Hall of Fame. The former NBA star made eight All-Star teams, eight All-NBA teams, five All-Defense teams, won three Defensive Player of the Year awards, and won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. After Howard found out about his induction, he took to his personal X account to reveal who he wanted to present him at the Hall of Fame, writing, "I want KG , Shaq, and Kareem to walk me out," with a prayer emoji and a #hof. Howard clearly indicated that he and O'Neal had squashed their years-long beef with one another through this message. This has led to an argument on X even after Howard's NBA days were over. Still, it appears Howard and O'Neal have put that behind them, as Howard has voiced his desire to have O'Neal there, and O'Neal has confirmed that the feeling is mutual. Braves third baseman Austin Riley's injury-shortened season ends following core surgery
ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley will miss the remainder of the season after having core injury surgery on Thursday. The Braves announced the surgery was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia. Riley, who was placed on the 10-day injured list for the second time in two months on Aug. 4 with a strained lower abdominal muscle, is expected to return in time for spring training next year. Riley first landed on the IL on July 12 with a strained abdomen. He returned on July 25 and finished the season hitting .260 with 16 homers and 54 RBI. The Braves also claimed right-hander Cal Quantrill off waivers from the Miami Marlins and optioned right-hander Dane Dunning to Triple-A Gwinnett. Also, the team added outfielder Jake Fraley to its roster after optioning RHP Connor Seabold to Gwinnett. Fraley was designated for assignment by Cincinnati on Sunday before being claimed by the Braves. Left-hander Dylan Dodd was recalled from Gwinnett, and infielder Luke Williams was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique muscle. ___ AP MLB:
