Gardaí probing if gangland hit foiled after loaded 3D printed gun is seized and two arrested

GardaÍ are investigating if they have foiled a gangland murder after a major firearms and drugs seizure in Co Cork late last night. Two Cork criminals who are known to detectives for offences such as drug dealing and robbery were arrested at a service station in Charleville, Co Cork, at 11pm on Wednesday night. Among the four deadly weapons seized was a fully loaded 3D printed gun as well as an unloaded high calibre assault rifle. The pistols can be created using readily available materials on a standard, commercially available 3D printer. Design plans for the firearms are easily accessible online. The seizure of such weapons is becoming an increasingly worrying trend for gardaí especially as they have been linked to multiple recent gang related murders in Canada and other jurisdictions this year. Sources say that two known criminals linked to a criminal gang whose base is on the outskirts of Cork city are suspected of procuring the guns from a Limerick-based crime gang. A member of the Limerick gang was allegedly caught with a 3D printed gun in a separate garda operation earlier this year. 'This is a major capture on many levels but the fact that a loaded firearm was seized is of particular concern,' a senior source told the Irish Independent. 'The big question is what dispute these well known criminals are involved in and that has not yet been established. 'This is further backing to the belief that there is long standing collusion between gangs based in Limerick and Cork cities,' the source added. Gardaí have commended the 'absolutely brilliant proactive' work of an armed local detective who was working on his own when he became suspicious of the occupants of the vehicle when it pulled into the petrol station. 'He spotted the vehicle and was rightly very suspicious – back up arrived for him very quickly and the arrest and seizure operation then took place,' a source explained. Gardaí tonight announced details of the organised crime arrests and published photos of the seized weapons and suspected heroin seized. 'While on patrol last night on Wednesday 20th August 2025, Gardaí from Charleville Garda Station stopped a car at a service station in Charleville, Co. 'A number of follow up searches have been executed at domestic residences in Co Cork today, Thursday 21st August 2025, resulting in the seizure of further ammunition. 'All firearms seized will be subject to further ballistic testing and forensic analysis. 'All drugs seized will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis,' the statement ended.

Gardaí arrest two in Cork after discovering guns and ammunition in car

Gardaí have arrested two men for questioning about the discovery of guns and ammunition when they stopped and searched a car in north Cork on Wednesday night. The men, brothers aged 40 and 32 from the Ballincollig area, were arrested by gardaí when they stopped and searched a car at a filling station in Charleville at about 11pm. Officers recovered a loaded 3D printed handgun and an AK-47 rifle and both guns were sent to Dublin for examination by ballistics experts to see if they were viable firearms. Gardaí also recovered about €800 worth of heroin during the search of the car and the drugs have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis. READ MORE Gardaí carried out follow up searches in Cork city and in Limerick county and recovered a further quantity of ammunition which has also been sent for ballistics examination. The men, whom gardaí believe were travelling from Limerick to Cork, were arrested and brought to Mallow Garda station for questioning about the firearms and the drugs. They were detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, which allows gardaí hold suspects for up to 72 hours before they must be charged or released.
