Town braces for arrival of 300,000 Oasis fans

Yahoo11-07-2025
Pubs, sandwich shops and other businesses and residents living close to the venue of Oasis's first homecoming gig said they were "taking the rough with the smooth".
Prestwich is bracing for up to 300,000 fans to descend over the five nights of Oasis homecoming gigs, with tonight's show marking the band's return to the region, last performing in Manchester 16 years ago.
And while some in the area are gearing up for the fun to start, others are bracing for traffic disruption and their town to become busier than usual.
Lee, who works at the Royal Oak pub, said he expected a good turn-out early on, but would be closing at 20:00 GMT.
He told the BBC: "We're only a small pub and we need to regroup and set up for the day after."
He added it was not worth paying staff to work extra hours.
But he said that, unlike with the annual Parklife festival, he expected a boost in trade before the show.
"It's not worth opening [for Parklife]", he said. "All the young ones want is to drink water and use the toilets."
Clothing business Printabulous has been doing a good trade in printing t-shirts for fans.
Neil Silverman, one of its directors, said the gigs meant there had been "an uptick in business", and that the firm would have a stall at private events at the Ostrich pub for up to 700 people on each of the five nights of Oasis shows.
"Obviously, the big companies want to use local businesses so that's why people like [events firm] Live Nation have also come to us for signage."
His co-director Sarah Flowers said she had also been running a local sandwich shop for 14 years, and had seen a revenue boost from hungry workers setting up the stages.
But she said she did not expect any real uplift from the gig-goers.
"Sandwich shops don't do anything, so I don't bother opening for that because the food sales are inside the park.
"What they tend to do is guide people straight into the park when they come of the public transport, which is good for the for the residents, but businesses on this lane don't necessarily get the benefit."
Karen Carr, owner of the Fresh Cookie sandwich and cake shop, said she was concerned she could lose a day's trade because of parking restrictions.
"A lot of my customers drive here… so I'm losing a lot of business," she said.
"I wish they had put a bit of parking for a couple of cars - even for five minutes so customers can run in and get a sandwich or cake. We're not even a sit-in business.
"If it's anything like Parklife, I won't get any business."
She said she lived nearby and that "as a resident - normally without the Parklife and Oasis concerts - it's great".
"I'm not against anything going on in the park - it brings money in but it's just that it's hard to get in and out when the roads are closed.
"You take the rough with the smooth."
Tracy Meek, who owns a cleaning company, said: "When Parklife first started here, people used to pee in the garden regularly, use your garden as a toilet, pee against cars… just squatting in the street.
"And I've noticed for the first time ever they've actually put toilets along the streets for Oasis, which is fantastic."
She said it could be a "nightmare" for parking and some fans would sleep overnight in cars in front of residents' homes.
But printing firm boss Mr Silverman said the success of Parklife has had knock-on effects including a boost in funding for Prestwich Carnival.
Nearby resident Michaela said holding the gigs over five days would cause "a bit of a hindrance for people in the area" with road restrictions and early closures of the local school.
She said she had been to previous Oasis concerts, but would be out of the area this time for her son's birthday.
"We were already going as my son wanted to go away but it's a bonus that it's the weekend of Oasis.
"You do see a lot of people putting loads of things on your wall [during Parklife], you see some sights.
"There is a good clean-up effort. It is a bit annoying when you go into the park and everything's closed off - we love the park.
"Obviously we do understand that it's going to be bringing a lot of money into Manchester, but it would be nice if Prestwich got a little bit more."

Here's how a 39-year-old could aim for a million by retirement, by spending £900 a month on UK shares

Retirement creeps up on many people but the best time to start thinking about it from a financial planning perspective is far in advance. Tucking money away regularly in blue-chip UK shares is a relatively simple but potentially powerful method many people use to try and prepare for their retirement, even if it is decades in the future. To illustrate, imagine a 39-year-old with not a penny in the stock market today turning a new leaf this week. They set up a regular contribution of £900 each month into a diversified portfolio of carefully chosen UK shares. If that portfolio compounds at 8% annually, by the time they reach 67 (soon to be the state retirement age), their portfolio will be worth over £1m. Compounding is a simple but powerful financial force multiplier In that example, I discussed compounding at 8% annually. Understanding this concept helps when assessing the potential credibility of such an approach. Here, compounding means the whole portfolio growing at an annual rate of 8% on average each year (some years will be better than others, in reality). That can be from dividends. It can also be from share price growth. Then again, share price declines would eat into the return – and dividends are never guaranteed. Contrast two UK shares. British American Tobacco yields 6.2% — and its share price has grown 38% over the past five years. That comfortably hits the 8% target. By contrast, JD Sports yields just 1.2%. Its share price has fallen 34% in five years. That falls far short of the target. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to what will happen in future, of course. By choosing the right mixture of UK shares, though, I see an 8% compound annual growth rate as a realistic target. Looking to the future One UK share I think investors ought to consider in this context is packaging and janitorial product supplier Bunzl (LSE: BNZL). The FTSE 100 share yields 3.2% but its share price growth over the past five years has been a measly 2%. Crucially, though, that includes a recent price crash. The Bunzl share price is down 32% since February. Revenues have been declining over the past couple of years. Net profit last year also fell. The company continues to navigate risks including the impact of tariff disputes on its supply chain and weak demand in some markets. But while it may not seem like much of a growth play right now, Bunzl's business model has long been growing through acquisition, offering economies of scale. The wider its product range and international reach, the more compelling Bunzl's offering should be for its target customer base. Despite recent wobbles, I think that business model has long-term legs. Moving from dreaming to action Putting £900 a month aside is well within the annual ISA allowance. So an investor may want to choose a competitive Stocks and Shares ISA as they try to build wealth. Alternatively they may be eyeing a different investment vehicle for retirement, such as a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP). Whatever the route, building any wealth will require taking some action — not just dreaming about it. Thousands defy rain to celebrate Pride festival

Thousands of people defied the downpours to take part in Leeds Pride this weekend. The vibrant annual festival, which celebrates LGBTQ+ life, was held in the city centre on Sunday. Despite the miserable weather, there were smiles everywhere as huge numbers turned out to watch the parade make its way across The Headrow amid a party atmosphere. Several people who attended claimed Leeds had one of the best Pride festivals. One woman, who went to the celebration with her partner and her partner's daughter, said: "Leeds Pride is one of my favourite Prides and I've been to a lot of them. "I like the family feel about this place. It keeps me coming back every year and I'm really excited to be here. "Despite the rain the atmosphere feels like it's buzzing." Pride's distinctive rainbow colours, music, dancing and drag queens all formed part of the fun at the festival, which was first held in Leeds in 2006. Another woman who attended said: "My son came out as gay one-and-a-half years ago, so I wanted to be here for him and to celebrate equality for everyone. "It's amazing. I'm absolutely loving it!" Nazir Uddin, who is originally from Bangladesh, said he had to hide his sexuality until he came to the UK. He said: "It is illegal to be homosexual in my country. "It's not just Bangladesh, there are still 64 countries where it's still illegal, so I'm here to represent all of those who are still hiding their sexuality. "I never experienced this (Pride) back home, so it's like heaven for me and I feel very safe here." Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey': Tickets for Imax 70MM Screenings Now Officially on Sale a Year Out

A new chapter is being added to Hollywood's encyclopedia of marketing tactics, thanks to Universal and Christopher Nolan. Exactly a year to the day of the release of Nolan's The Odyssey, advance tickets are already on sale for Imax theaters that are equipped to screen the epic in 70mm film, the Oscar-winning filmmaker's format of choice. The offer officially commenced Thursday at midnight ET, according to Imax's social feed. More from The Hollywood Reporter Imax Extends CEO Richard Gelfond's Contract Through 2028 'Black Swan' Books Exclusive 15th Anniversary Run in Imax Theaters 'Terrifier' House Inspired by 2022 Sequel Set for Halloween Horror Nights By all accounts, it's the first time in history that any tickets have gone on sale a year before a film's release. One caveat: as of now, there are are only 16 sites in the U.S. that aer part of the offering, six in Canada, two in in the U.K., one in Australia and one the Czech Republic. More locations are expected to be added in the coming months as Imax audiotorums are equpped with 70mm projection, including Regal LA Live. Nolan's take on the classic Greek myth — starring Matt Damon as the eternal hero Odysseus — is being shot entirely on Imax film cameras, a first for a commercial feature. Until now, such a feat would have been impossible. But after the success of his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, Nolan approached Imax about upgrading its cameras, including resolving issues with processing the cameras' 70 mm film stock and the weight of the equipment. Imax screens ponied up more than $190 million of Oppenheimer's total global gross of $975.8 million, or 20 percent. 'Chris called me up and said, 'If you can figure out how to solve the problems, I will make [Odyssey] 100 percent in Imax.' And that's what we're doing,' Imax CEO Rich Gelfond recalled when speaking at the company's annual press lunch at the Cannes Film Festival this past May. 'He forced us to rethink that side of our business, our film recorders, our film cameras.' The new film cameras are reserved for Nolan for now, but after he wraps The Odyssey, Imax will begin renting them out to other directors. Nolan has always been a big fan of Imax cameras, which he used when shooting Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight movies and Tenet. The Odyssey has a net budget of $250 million, which will make it the most expensive film of Nolan's career. The improbable blockbuster success of the atomic energy biopic Oppeneheimer proved yet again why Nolan is one of the few directors who can reliably deliver an all-audience event film, and The Odyssey's epic scope and A-list cast should prove a major draw. In addition to Damon, the film stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Mia Goth. The classic story follows the king of Ithaca as he undertakes a long and perilous journey home to his wife Penelope following the Trojan War. His challenges are many as he spends years encountering a succession of mythical beings including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, the enchantress Circe, and travels to the Underworld. The first teaser trailer for Nolan's event pic debuted exclusively in theaters in front of Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth, which opened over the Fourth of July corridor to huge numbers and continues to be a major draw. Releasing the trailer so early is a bit unusual, considering that The Odyssey is still filming, but an all-audience tentpole such as Rebirth provided an opportunity Universal and Nolan's team couldn't pass up, even if the teaser was leaked online. Word of the advance ticket sales were also leaked when certain theater chains jumped the gun and posted notices that tickets would go on sale for the select 70mm screenings July 17.
