Prior to joining the BJP in 2015, Sarma served as a minister in the Congress-led Assam government.
Kharge condemned Himanta Biswa Sarma's recent statement about pig rearing as a means to protect land from a specific religious group, stating, "The CM is spreading venom with such remarks.
The law and order is under you, and you are saying such things."
The Congress president accused the current BJP government in Assam of substantial corruption and declared, "Those who have wronged people will be sent to jail. They should repair prisons now, as they will have to stay there."
Addressing the BJP's claims of progress under their dual governance at national and state levels, the Congress leader remarked, "What we saw today is that to travel 30 km from Guwahati, it took us two hours. Is this the development this government claims?"
He stated that Assam's residents were facing intimidation under the pretext of identifying illegal immigrants, and expressed confidence that voters would respond appropriately to the BJP-led administration in the upcoming election.
The Congress president criticised the BJP regarding a recent Gir cows allocation controversy, stating that whilst they claim to worship cows, they have proven to be 'cow thieves' in this instance.
He noted that despite media intimidation, whilst some might retreat due to such pressure, others who remain undaunted will support the public.
He warned that the BJP administration might employ strategies like voter list modifications and constituency delimitation against Congress in Assam, and advised party members to remain watchful.

Kharge outlined that a Congress government would ensure children's education, employment for Assam's youth and optimal wages for tea garden workers.
He cautioned that Dalits, SC, ST and OBC communities need to be vigilant, as their reservations could be eliminated by the central BJP government.
Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge pointed out his five-nation tour whilst failing to spare two hours for troubled Manipur.
He remarked on Modi's recent distribution of appointment letters, noting that leaders like "Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao or their own Vajpayee" never engaged in such activities.
He emphasised that national security should be the Prime Minister's primary focus.
Kharge questioned the BJP's legacy, comparing it to Nehru's era of establishing major factories and PSUs, suggesting the current government lacks memorable achievements.
He accused Modi of enabling his associates to exploit the poor whilst securing benefits for himself and his party.
He stressed the importance of collective action to preserve the Constitution.
He stated that the Constitution underpins democracy, accusing RSS and BJP of attempting to alter it.
Kharge encouraged party workers to unite under new state president Gaurav Gogoi to defeat the current government in the upcoming election.

INDIA bloc parties resolve to question foreign policy ‘failures' of government
The Opposition will highlight the government's failure to apprehend the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack and U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated claims on allegedly brokering peace between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, the leaders of 24 INDIA bloc parties decided at a virtual meeting on Saturday (July 19, 2025) evening. The meeting comes ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is scheduled to begin on Monday (July 21, 2025). Sources said the parties have also decided to hold a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the Assembly polls in the State. The Parliamentary floor leaders could have another meeting, after the all-party meeting hosted by the government on Sunday. Statehood for J&K The demand for statehood for Jammu and Kashmir will also be raised during the session. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had recently written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the subject. National Conference leader and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the Opposition must be firm on this demand. It was also decided that the INDIA bloc should have a physical meeting soon. Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said that the leaders have listed eight priority issues, though this by no means is an exhaustive list of all the subjects that the Opposition plans to raise. 'The issue that directly impacts the pride of 140 crore Indians is why, even after so many days, the government has failed to nab terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack,' he said. Mr. Tiwari said that the government has already 'confessed' that there was an 'intelligence failure'. 'U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated claim, at least 24 times, is that he used America's trade deal as the negotiating card to broker peace between India and Pakistan. There was speculation that the Trinamool Congress could skip the meeting, but the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was present. Sources said that Mr. Banerjee questioned why the Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Deka got an extension even though the J&K Lt. Governor himself admitted that 'intelligence failure' led to the terror attack. The meeting began with Mr. Kharge's presenting a brief outline on what the Opposition expected from the government during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. He said that the 'foreign policy failure' in the context of the Pahalgam terror attack needs to be addressed. Mr. Gandhi, in a very brief intervention, said that India's 'recent failures in foreign policy is intricately connected to the Pahalgam terror attack'. During this discussion, Mr. Tiwari said the Opposition will also raise India's stand on 'Israel's brutal and persistent attack on Gaza'. 'We expect the Prime Minister to be present during the debate on these issues,' Mr. Tiwari added. Several parties also raised the issue of the impending delimitation, which is of deep concern to the Southern States that are anticipating a possible reduction in seats in Parliament because of the exercise. CPI general secretary D. Raja flagged Mr. Gandhi's recent remarks equating the CPI(M) and RSS. According to sources, he said leaders should not raise statements that 'create conflict' among the INDIA bloc constituents and 'confusion among the people'. Shah: BJP gave U'khand 4 times more financial aid than Cong
Dehradun: Union home minister Amit Shah, addressing the Uttarakhand Nivesh Utsav 2025 in Rudrapur on Saturday, launched a scathing attack on Congress saying the BJP govt has provided four times more financial assistance to the state in comparison to the previous govt. "Through devolution and grant-in-aid, Congress gave Rs 53,000 crore to Uttarakhand from 2004 to 2014, whereas the Modi govt has given Rs 1.86 lakh crore to the Himalayan state from 2014 to 2024, which is 3.25 times more. Besides, we have also given Rs 31,000 crore for roads, Rs 40,000 crore for rail projects, and Rs 100 crore for the airport, making it four times more than the financial assistance provided by the Congress govt," Shah said. He added that the Congress had recently asked him on social media to list what the BJP had done for the state. "I very well knew that Congress would never tell what it has done for Uttarakhand. Therefore, I thought of sharing data of both the Congress and the BJP govt." The event also marked a celebration by the Dhami govt of investments worth Rs 1 lakh crore being grounded following the Global Investors Summit held in Dec 2023. Praising chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Shah said the state's efforts had opened doors to 81,000 new jobs, with another 2.5 lakh expected through ancillary industries. "Bringing investment and business to the hills is far tougher compared to the plains. Therefore, I know that this achievement required a major effort," he said. Shah noted that industries were being set up not just in major cities but also in smaller urban centres. He also recalled telling Dhami at the end of the 2023 summit that signing MoUs was the easy part — grounding the Rs 3.56 lakh crore worth of proposals would be the real test. "The length of national highways has increased by 60% in ten years, with eight lakh km of roads constructed in rural areas during this period. The convenient Vande Bharat train has reached 333 districts. In ten years, 45,000 km of railway tracks have been electrified, 88 new airports have been built, and there has been an eleven-fold increase in inland waterway cargo," he said, adding, "By 2027, we are set to become the third-largest economy in the world. " Shah said Uttarakhand's development was key to fulfilling PM Modi's vision. "Our PM envisions a developed India by 2047, but achieving this goal is not possible without a developed Uttarakhand. For the holistic development of the country, the development of smaller states, including the northeastern states, is essential." CM Dhami said the occasion marked not just an economic milestone, but a broader vision for inclusive growth. "Today's celebration is not just about economic investment but also reflects inclusive development based on Uttarakhand's rich potential, entrepreneurial spirit, and public participation, which will lead the state to new heights of self-reliance and industrial prosperity." He added that out of MoUs worth over Rs 3.56 lakh crore signed during the 2023 summit, projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore had already been grounded. Shah also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects totalling Rs 1,342 crore — including 16 new projects worth Rs 1,263.5 crore and four completed ones worth Rs 79.34 crore. Among these were the district jail in Pithoragarh (Rs 34.49 crore), a government polytechnic in Champawat (Rs 18 crore), Haldwani's bus terminus (Rs 378 crore), and a drinking water supply system for Tanakpur (Rs 171 crore).

Aizawl: BJP National Minority Morcha secretary Delson Notlia said the central BJP has never asked the Mizo tribal community to become Hindus, rather what BJP wants is to lead the state and the people with love and dedication. "Earlier, other political parties attacked Congress, when it was formed in Mizoram, as a non-tribal and a Hindu party. The same tactic and propaganda is now used by Congress against BJP to ensure that it will remain a political pariah in the Christian dominated state," he said.
