Venus Williams' honest take on Serena Williams' retirement
Venus Williams is returning to the WTA Tour after more than a year away, but the seven-time Grand Slam champion says the comeback would be even more meaningful if her sister Serena were alongside her.
'I keep saying to my team: The only thing that would make this better is if she was here. Like, we always did everything together, so of course I miss her,' Venus said Sunday at the DC Open, as reported by Howard Fendrich of the Associated Press. 'But if she comes back, I'm sure she'll let y'all know.'
The 45-year-old Williams is set to compete in Washington, D.C., as a wild-card entrant, marking her first appearance on tour since the Miami Open in March 2024. While Serena has not played since the 2022 U.S. Open, Venus said the 23-time major champion still has the ability to step in and dominate.
'She can take six months off and she clocks it clean,' Venus said. 'You can't teach that kind of talent. She's just so good.'
Venus said her younger sister briefly joined her during a recent practice session, hitting for 15 or 20 minutes. A video of Serena swinging a racket surfaced on social media, prompting speculation about a return. But Venus downplayed any suggestions, saying she hasn't asked Serena directly about her plans.
'This is very special for me to come back and play tennis,' Venus added. 'I think it's a surprise for the fans — and a surprise in general, as I hold my cards tight.'
Williams' return was set in motion months ago when her team reached out to DC Open chairman Mark Ein about a potential spot in the tournament. Ein quickly welcomed her back, calling her 'an icon of the sport — and, importantly, both on and off the court.'
When asked about her motivation to return, Venus replied simply: 'Why not?'
As for whether more tournaments are in her future, she said, 'I'm just here for now, and who knows? Maybe there's more.'

After one season back with the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson was dealt in March to Houston in a trade that sent guard Kenyon Green to Philadelphia. The Texans had plans for him to replace Eric Murray in their secondary after Murray signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Gardner-Johnson began his NFL career with three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He joined the Eagles 2022 before moving on to the Detroit Lions in 2023. After only three games with the Lions, he suffered a torn pectoral and missed the rest of the season. That offseason, he signed a three-year deal to return to Philadelphia.

So let's get started! #23 – Jaheim Merriweather Running Back 6'2', 215 lbs Sophomore Jackson, Tennessee 2025 Outlook: Running back rotation Merriweather is one of the few returning players from last year's team. He appeared in 11 games as a freshman. He only carried the ball 15 times for 77 yards, but just to see the field at the running back position as a freshman is a great accomplishment. The hope with this position is obviously that Devin Mockobee will hold down the starting role and hopefully reach 1,000 yards this season. However, even the best of running backs needs breaks. Merriweather could be one of the players to step up into a backup rotation role at the RB position. Opportunities will be available at nearly all positions this season and RB is no different. #23 – Trey Smith Defensive End 6'4', 255 lbs Sophomore (redshirt) Apopka, Florida Previous School: Illinois 2025 Outlook: Defensive end depth Smith comes to Purdue after playing at Illinois last season. He'd been at Illinois for two seasons appearing in 11 games over those two seasons. No huge stats to speak of during that time with only two tackles including one tackle for loss on the season. Now he will look to make an impact on a different Big Ten team just down the road. Smith certainly has some good measurables, now it's a matter of putting it together on the field with a new playbook.

Canadian teen Mboko outlasts Osaka to win WTA Montreal crown
Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko conquered four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday, capping a fairytale run at the WTA Canadian Open with her first WTA title. Mboko, 18 and playing in her first WTA final, denied Osaka her first tour-level title since the 2021 Australian Open, wearing down the Japanese star, 27, who has struggled to find consistency since returning from maternity leave early in 2024. Mboko, who was ranked outside the top 300 to start the season and had climbed to 85th entering the week, is now projected to rise to 34th in the world. Before an ecstatic center court crowd, she converted eight of her nine break points, seizing her fourth win of the week over a Grand Slam winner. She ousted former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the second round and toppled reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff in the fourth before saving a match point en route to a semi-final victory over former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina. Displaying vintage power and precision, Osaka gave her inexperienced opponent little room to maneuver in the first set, gaining an early break on the way to a 3-0 lead and pocketing the set when Mboko, who had 22 unforced errors in the set, mis-fired on two forehands to drop her serve a second time. Mboko turned the tide in a second set that featured seven total breaks of serve. Osaka looked bewildered as Mboko ramped up the pressure, the Canadian breaking her at love for a 5-2 lead. Serving for the set, however, Mboko coughed up three double faults and was broken. Osaka capitalized on the reprieve with a hold at love, but Mboko took the set in the next game when Osaka sailed a forehand long on set point. Osaka appeared demoralized as she was broken at love to open the third set. Mboko couldn't consolidate the break, but Osaka was on the ropes again in the third game, drawing a warning for batting a ball skyward in frustration after missing her first serve on break point -- which she surrendered with another errant forehand. That launched a run of five straight games for Mboko. Winners were proving hard to come by for both players, and when the Canadian saved four break points to hold for a 3-1 lead, Osaka had a mountain to climb that finally proved too steep. When Osaka smacked a backhand into the net on match point, Mboko dropped to the court as the crowd roared out one more ovation.
