Jaguars ride high on Reeth and Anirban's exploits

The Maharashtra derby lived up to its billing and offered the Ultimate Table Tennis Season 6 its first nail-biter as PBG Pune Jaguars — a rebranded team — stunned the fancied U Mumba TT to mark a sensational debut on Sunday.
Despite captain Alvaro Robles underperforming in the opening singles tie against an on-song Lilian Bardet, Dena Meshref kept the Jaguars in the hunt by stretching Bernadette Szocs.
The Indian duo of Anirban Ghosh and T. Reeth Rishya then punched above their weight in the last two singles outings to spark off celebrations in the Jaguars camp.

Ghosh — despite wasting four match points in the second game — won the decider against Akash Pal to stretch the tie into the deciding match, with the teams locked at six games apiece. Reeth then used all her experience to make it a forgettable UTT debut for Swastika Ghosh by maintaining a clean slate.
Reeth's forehand reverse-pendulum serve — with side-spin and top-spin variations — left Swastika flummoxed. Reeth won service points at 9-9 in the first game and on the golden point of the second to seal the tie for the Pune outfit.

Earlier in the evening, U Mumba kept itself afloat with stunning comebacks. Szocs saved three match points in the second game before edging past left-handed Dina in the second game. Akash then started a stunning comeback against Anirban, thanks to a stunning forehand down-the-line block at 6-10 that started a five-point streak.
The point of the day was played in the first match. At 8-3 in the second game, Bardet won an 18-shot rally against Robles to start off a series of surprising results.
Who needs cardio when you've got rallies like this? 😅

"No Chance Of Winning T20 World Cup": India's Asia Cup Squad Blasted By WC Winner, 3 Undeserving Stars Named

The Indian cricket squad for the Asia Cup T20, that starts on September 9, has disappointed many. Almost all cricket experts are convinced that two players - Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal - deserved a chance. While Jaiswal was named among the five stanby players, Iyer did not even get that slot. 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth said that he finds the selection of Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana baffling in the Asia Cup squad. "We might win the Asia Cup with this team, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch," said Srikkanth on his YouTube channel. "Are you going to take this team to the World Cup? Is this the preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is hardly six months away? They have gone backwards. Axar Patel has been axed from vice-captaincy. I don't know how Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana have come in. "IPL is considered the main criteria for selection, but the selectors seem to have considered performances before that." Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar also could not fathom the fact that India excluded Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup squad, announced at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Tuesday. The selectors sprung a major surprise by including Test team captain Shubman Gill in the squad despite him missing the last few T20I matches, chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the decision to leave Iyer out as 'no fault of his. Nor is it ours.' "I can't fathom or understand what reason could justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of the 20-member squad. I'm not even talking about the final 15, but the 20 itself, which sends a clear message that Shreyas Iyer is not in the selectors' scheme of things, at least from a T20 perspective,' said Nayar to JioHotstar. Iyer had scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 in IPL 2025 and led the Punjab Kings to the final in Ahmedabad, but failed to find a place in the 15. Gill's recall comes on the back of a strong IPL 2025 campaign for Gujarat Titans, where he led the team into the playoffs and amassed 650 runs in 15 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87. He also has an impressive T20I record, scoring 578 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27, with one century and three fifties. Notably, Gill is among the few Indians to have centuries in all three international formats.

The must-follow World Championships for Indian sports fans: Badminton, Athletics, Archery, Wrestling

The arrival of August right after the Olympics heralds new beginnings, and for Indian sport, it is the first big opportunity to put the Games behind, and resume the next step to greatness. Starting Monday, August 25, top Indian Olympic discipline athletes will be seen in various sports, kickstarting fresh challenges. For some, it is about zealously guarding their turf, for others it's upgrading colour of their past medals, and for some it's fighting back from Olympic disappointments. Here's a look at the World Championship Quartet in 4 key disciplines that are so important for Indians. So important. Venue: Adidas Arena (Porte de La Chapelle), Paris, France Dates: August 25 – 31 Key Days: Round 1 on 25, 26 August Quarterfinals on August 29 Semis, Finals August 30-31 Broadcast: JioHotstar Indian interest: * Lakshya Sen Can the Paris Olympics 4th placer find a redemption song? WORLD No 1 Shi Yuqi will have loads to say in Round 1, but Sen is dangerous. For the Chinese. Never mind his form or ranking. There's no Viktor Axelsen and Kunlavut Vitidsarn is in the other half. * Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty India's best bets to keep the medallist going and gently revving up to hit the peak again. India face a very real dread of not medallist at Worlds for first time since 2010, but the duo back in Top 10, won't give up without a fight. Draw isn't kind. Chinese Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang in Round 3 and Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik potentially in quarters, to seal the medal. But Never. Ever. Underestimate. Satwik-Chirag. At. Paris. Ever. * PV Sindhu It's a straightforward equation if you simplify life. There's a World Championship medal in badminton. There's a Chinese, Wang Zhi Yi in the path. There's Sindhu. It simply never has gone wrong before. It's rinse, repeat, really, even if her form has been disastrous. But when did Sindhu ever need a long runway to take flight? It's the World's. She can go past Zhang Ning's 5 World medals. It's too irresistible, the ambition. xxx Venue: Gwangju, Korea Dates: September 6-12 Key days: Sunday 7 September: Compound team finals Monday 8 September: Compound men finals Tuesday 9 September: Compound women finals Wednesday 10 September: Recurve team finals Thursday 11 September: Recurve men finals Friday 12 September: Recurve women finals Broadcast: Sony Indian interest: * Rishabh Yadav Ranked World No 6 in Compound Archery, Gurgaon archer edged Rishabh Yadav out Abhishek Varma (ranked 7) at World Games to take bronze. However, it is the mixed team medal (not an event at Worlds) for which all preparation is geared for the 23-year-old, after he picked gold with Jyothi Vennam at Florida WC beating Huang + Chen of Taipei 153-151, and a bronze at Madrid. This ensured Indians are ranked 1 in mixed. He showed good temperament to nick bronze at Shanghai World Cup pipping Kim Jongho. However in mens team, India, also ranked No 1, have USA, Turkey, Korea, Denmark, Italy to contend with, and he has Prathamesh Fuge, Aman Saini and Priyansh for company. * Jyothi Vennam SHe has won it all, with only the Olympics medal to go. Jyothi Vennam is ranked No 3 behind Andrea Becerra and Ella Gibson currently, with Sara Lopez at 4. The multiple World Champion, defends gold in women's team at Gwangju. Check out her haul: World Cups- 11 gold, 7 each of bronze and silver, one silver at World Cup final + 2 World titles, 4 silver and 5 bronze at World Championships. This one, with Compound making it to Olympics, becomes the biggest at 29. * Dhiraj Bommadevara Ranked 15 currently in individual men's Recurve, his last medal came at Florida Stage 1 WC, a bronze, though hes had a bunch of early round losses since Paris Olympics. He beat Tarundep Rai for Asia cup gold in February 2024, but medallist at Worlds for India's highest ranked and supremely talented, remains a challenge. He has Tarundep, Rahul Singh, Neeraj Chauhan alongside in team. * Deepika Kumari A good 13 years after her Olympic debut at 17, Deepika Kumari, now a mother, remains her India No 1 status, as World No 4. She has made a strong comeback, but the naturally excellent archer needs an Olympic medal to seal her legacy, and this World Championship will be a good time to beat Lim Sihyeon, Casey Kaufhold, or the purple aura-ed Penny Healy. She leads a young team, but needs all her experience herself to undo the Olympic disappointments alongside Ankita Bhakat, another nursing a 4th place stewing from Paris. xxx Venue: Tokyo National Stadium Dates: September 13-21 Key days: Javelin Qualification September 17 Javelin Final September 18 Broadcast: Yet unclear Indian interest: * Neeraj Chopra. Ofcourse. He won the world title at Budapest, but the silver at Olympics should singe. India's finest individual Olympian has only gotten better in terms of distance, goingbpast the 90 metres, a 90.23 at Doha. Tokyo was where Chopra won his Olympics title, albeit in a near empty stadium. This will be a good time to get a gold in front of a full house and pocket USD 70,000. Julian Weber, Arshad Nadeem, besides a bunch of others will offer tough competition. World Athletics has picked Chopra as a Key attraction alongside Mondo Duplantis, Faith Kipyegon, Noah Lyles, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Ryan Crouser and Femke Bol. Sachin Yadav is India's second Javelin entry. Annu Rani leads India's Women's Javelin challenge. For once, bless the land of rising sun, the Javelin Final timings will be India Primetime and not deep into the midnight and beyond, with Japan not expected to be shoddy towards Javelin coverage. * Gulveer Singh has had a breakout season in 5000 m, but will be tested at Worlds. xxx Venue: Arena Zagreb, Croatia Dates: September 13-21 Key days: Men's freestyle finals – 57kg, Aman Sehrawat – September 15 65 kg, Sujeet- September 16 Women's 53kg final, Antim Panghal – September 18 Women's 76 kg, Priya Malik – September 17 Broadcast: UWW Indian interest: * Aman Sehrawat Paris bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat, fights in the always-interesting 57 kg division, and will hope to do one better and try make the finals, this time in a category where Ravi Dahiya instill a legend. A Worlds gold, Indias first since Sushil Kumar in 2010 can change that. Rei Higuchi, Spencer Lee and Gulomjon Abdullaev are big names in 57. * Antim Panghal No matter how the Olympics were a disaster for both her, as well as the legendary Vinesh Phogat, Zagreb offers the youngster a chance to bring in her second Worlds medal. Vinesh has 3 to be India's greatest achieving wrestler at World Championships. Antim was never in her shadow, but she can carve her own niche, if she strikes consistency. A win at the Budapest ranking series was a good tune up, and her training looks on track. * Sujeet Kalkal His name means a din, but the debutant is known for his counterattacking speed even in the stacked 65 kg field. He won all matches of Asian u23 by tech superiority, beat Paris bronze medallist Islam Dudaev at Budapest, where he was on a high point scoring spree. His increased strength is aiding his speed. Japanese Kotaro Kiyooka, Iranian Rahman Amouzad, and Sebastian Riveira were strong at Paris.
