Editorial: Bullying leads to a lifetime of misery

Being a kid is tough.
For kids who find themselves the target of bullying, going to school can turn into a daily ordeal. This is a widespread experience, with about one in four Australian students in Years 4 to 9 being consistently bullied by their peers, statistics from the Kids Institute show.
And according to a British study published last year, the impacts can cast a shadow over victims' lives for decades to come. Being bullied as a child is linked to poorer health, wellbeing and employment outcomes as an adult. Researchers from the University of Glasgow and University College London found bullying victims were more likely to die before their mid-50s.
Being bullied can set victims up for a lifetime of misery.
That study was based off the life outcomes of victims of bullying who are today in their 60s. And as traumatic as their experiences were, at least they had some respite available to them outside of school hours.
Children in the playground today have no such relief. Their bullies can reach them at any hour of the day through social media. Just how much worse will the impact of bullying be for them later in life?
Knowing what we do about the short and long term effects of bullying, schools and parents have a moral imperative to do what they can to stamp it out.
Yet even among educators, old school attitudes to bullying prevail.
A submission to the Federal Government's anti-bullying review by the WA Council of State School Organisations claims that too often, kids who are the victims of bullying are encouraged to make nice with their tormenters.
It's a misguided approach, rooted in victim blaming that serves only to risk re-traumatising targets of bullying while downplaying the seriousness of the bullies' actions.
University of South Australia senior lecturer and bullying researcher Deborah Green said bullying was a different kettle of fish to isolated conflicts between peers.
'We're talking about the abuse and misuse of power,' she said.
'So when you've got that dynamic going on, bringing the two people together is not helpful. They have to co-exist, usually in a classroom, but they don't need to be friends.'
The WACSSO's submission calls for specially-trained teams tasked with responding to bullying to be stationed in every school while the organisation's president Pania Turner wants a national standard definitions framework to take the guesswork out of responding to reports of bullying for educators.
It's a proposal that makes sense. Responses to incidents of bullying should be consistent across schools to give kids the best chance to thrive in the classroom and in the decades to come, regardless of where they went to school.
Bullying isn't 'character-building' and it's not something we should expect victims to 'get over'. Those outdated and unhelpful attitudes have no place in our education system.

Now the fungus is again at the centre of intrigue after researchers in the US crafted the deadly spores into a compound that can kill cancer cells. In the search for new drugs, scientists have been studying a group of natural molecules called RiPPs (ribosomally synthesised and post-translationally modified peptides). Many of these tiny proteins have proved toxic to infectious microbes and cancer cells, which is why researchers are on the hunt for new types of RiPPs to test their medical potential. 'We often think of fungi as causing disease or food spoilage, but this is an example of them holding the key to treating diseases.' Dr Justin Beardsley, University of Sydney Thousands of these molecules have been found in bacteria but only a few from fungi, which is why researchers from the University of Pennsylvania went looking in Aspergillus. They found new types of RiPPs with a structure of interlocking rings and tested them against human leukemia cells. Some of the molecules blocked the growth of the cancerous cells. Scientists then added a fat molecule present in the royal jelly that bees feed their larvae. The fat molecule or 'lipid' helped the cancer-busting RiPPs to infiltrate leukemia cells, and together the experimental combination performed as effectively as two existing leukemia drugs.

Movement the key to tackling kids' mental health crisis in Australia

A major Australian study has found that regular movement, even unstructured play or casual activity, can significantly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in children and teenagers. Researchers at the University of South Australia reviewed 375 clinical trials involving more than 38,000 young people aged between five and 18. Their findings show that physical activity has a powerful impact on mental health, and the benefits can appear within weeks. 'We found that when children and teenagers moved more, through play, sport or exercise, it significantly reduced depression and anxiety,' said lead researcher Dr Ben Singh, a research fellow at UniSA. The research comes amid growing concern about youth mental health, with one in four Australian children now experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, often from a young age. Singh said pressures from school, uncertainty about the future, and constant exposure to social media were major contributors. He believes movement is a low-cost, accessible tool that can help families, schools and policymakers respond. 'A lot of children either don't receive treatment or don't respond well to traditional methods like therapy or medication,' he said. 'Movement gives us a practical alternative.' The study found the greatest mental health improvements occurred in programs lasting fewer than 12 weeks, meaning children don't need to wait months to see results. Importantly, the activity didn't need to be intense or structured. Informal movement, such as walking, riding a bike or playing a game outside, delivered similar mental health benefits to team sports or exercise classes. 'It doesn't have to be elite sport,' Singh said. 'A game of backyard cricket or a bike ride with friends is enough. What matters most is that kids are active.' Beyond physical benefits, movement was shown to boost confidence, improve energy levels and support social interaction, particularly when done with peers. 'Children who move more tend to feel better, connect more and build confidence,' Singh said. 'It's something every parent and teacher can encourage.' The research team is now calling on schools, communities and health professionals to treat physical movement as a key part of mental health care. 'Movement should be part of the conversation when we talk about supporting young people,' Singh said. 'It's free, it's effective and it could make a lasting difference.'
