Aircraft glitch forces Delhi-Goa IndiGo flight to declare 'PAN PAN' mid-air
The Airbus A320neo aircraft, carrying 191 passengers, departed from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and was bound for Goa Airport when a mid-air engine complication forced it to make an emergency landing. The plane landed without incident at 9:53 pm in Mumbai. Airport authorities in Mumbai reported that the event occurred approximately 100 nautical miles north of Bhubaneswar.
One of the officials was quoted as saying that the pilot had declared "PAN PAN PAN" due to a malfunction in engine number 1. IndiGo, however, attributed the diversion to a technical fault. A company spokesperson stated, 'A technical snag was detected on flight 6E 6271 while flying from Delhi to Manohar International Airport, Goa on 16 July 2025. Following procedures, the aircraft was diverted and landed in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai.'
The IndiGo incident occurred just over a month after the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which resulted in the deaths of all but one of the 242 passengers on board, along with 19 people on the ground. It marked the most severe aviation disaster India has seen in a decade.
This tragedy has reignited an ongoing industry debate regarding the implementation of cockpit video recorders to supplement existing cockpit voice and flight data recorders used in crash investigations. Proponents argue that video footage could address gaps left by audio and data logs, while critics express concerns about privacy violations and the potential misuse of such recordings, asserting that the added value to investigations is minimal.
Touchdown scare at Patna airport
Earlier on July 15, another IndiGo aircraft experienced a moment of tension at Patna's Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport. Flight 6E 2482, which was arriving from Delhi with 173 passengers, momentarily touched down before taking off again. The pilot assessed that there might not be adequate runway remaining for a secure halt and opted to initiate a go-around. The aircraft circled the vicinity briefly before safely landing. According to airport officials, both flight operations and passenger handling continued without disruption.

Record 45 million Kanwariyas visit Uttarakhand for Shravan; police cases filed over hooliganism
A record 45 million Kanwariyas visited Haridwar during the 13-day Shravan Kanwar Mela held from July 11 to 23, officials from the Kanwar Mela cell said on Wednesday, adding that the number surpassed last year's footfall of 41.4 million pilgrims and 40.7 million in 2023. Officials said the final tally was still being updated as pilgrims continued to arrive and leave the city till late evening. A large number of kanwariyas moving through Delhi caused massive traffic jams across the city, leaving many commuters stuck for hours. 'The mela concludes with over 4.5 crore devotees collecting Ganga water. We thank all devotees, Mela staff, police, paramilitary forces, volunteers, and residents for their cooperation,' said Dixit. Later, the officials met Mata Mansa Devi temple trust president Mahant Ravindra Puri and thanked the saint community and akhadas for their support. Amid concerns over garbage accumulation at the ghats, Dixit said a three-day cleanliness drive will be carried out across the mela zone, Kanwar patri, highways, parking lots, and marketplaces. 'Pilgrims and residents must be sensitised against littering. Ganga is our mother, and polluting her banks goes against our beliefs,' said Mahamandleshwar Swami Harichetnanand of the Bada Udasin Akhada. The state police deployed 3,000 policemen, 1,350 home guards and PRD (Pradeshik Raksha Dal), 15 companies of PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary), nine companies of paramilitary forces, nine teams of bomb disposal squad, four teams of the anti-terrorist squad, 10 teams of SDRF, 10 teams of drones operating personnel, and seven teams of jal police during the Kanwar yatra. The mela was monitored round-the-clock through drones and CCTV cameras. Anti-terror squads, bomb disposal teams, mounted units, sniffer dogs, and undercover personnel were deployed for security. 'The traffic plan, parking zones, and crowd control measures were implemented effectively. The Mela force performed commendably with support from volunteers,' SSP Dobhal said. As the yatra comes to an end, police said that according to official data, a dozen FIRs were registered, 17 people arrested and 150 unidentified kanwariyas booked for hooliganism and indulging in violence during the Kanwar yatra. Uttarakhand director general of police (DGP) Deepam Seth on July 10 said that hooliganism in the name of faith will not be tolerated and dealt with strict action. On July 15, Uttarakhand high court took serious note of incidents of violence reported during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra in the state and sought a detailed response from the DGP and Panchayati Raj secretary Chandresh Kumar Yadav on how the state plans to manage conducting Panchayat elections at a time when the state is witnessing huge influx of Kanwariyas in the ongoing Kanwar Yatra and prevailing monsoon conditions across the state. The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Dehradun-based petitioner Baijnath, seeking rescheduling of upcoming Panchayat elections in light of the Kanwar Yatra and prevailing monsoon conditions across the state.

Half a month needed to dispose of garbage left behind by kanwariyas: Haridwar officials
The flow of devotees to Haridwar during the two-week-long Kanwar Yatra ended on Wednesday, but it would take another fortnight for the authorities to fully clean up the tonnes of garbage they have left behind. According to an estimate, so much waste has accumulated that a proper cleaning campaign would take at least half a month. Garbage disposal during the yatra had been a problem for the administration as the huge crowds of pilgrims made some areas inaccessible for the sanitation trucks. "During Kanwar Yatra, lakhs of kanwariyas reached Haridwar by foot and in vehicles every day. This made it impossible for the sanitation workers to take garbage trucks everywhere. As a result, regular cleaning was not done in some areas. But in the areas where they were able to go, cleaning continued uninterrupted," District Magistrate Mayur Dixit told PTI. Municipal Commissioner Nandan Kumar also admitted that constant arrival of devotees to Haridwar in the last 15 days had badly hit the regular cleaning system. "It is anticipated that about 10,000 metric tonnes of garbage has been accumulated in the corporation area. The exact figure will be known only after a day or two," he said. Cleaning of the city area has already begun; in the initial phase, urban roads and Ganga ghats are being cleaned, he said, adding that this will be completed in three days. Around thousand sanitation workers are deployed for cleaning the municipal corporation area, he added. Most of the Shiva devotees who visited Haridwar collected Ganga water from Har Ki Pauri. According to Nitin Gautam, President of Shri Ganga Sabha, an organisation that manages Har Ki Pauri, the biggest problem in the area is the plastic waste that kanwariyas left behind. This include bags, polythene sheets, plastic glasses and cups, and polythene or plastic sheets used for bedding. The Shri Ganga Sabha is engaged in the cleaning works along with the administration. They had anyway been trying to clean the ghats late at night. The major contributors to the waste in the Kanwar Mela area were the bhandaras set up by voluntary organisations and some private individuals for the service of kanwariyas, the locals said. According to Vipin Sharma, a local resident, the kanwariyas discarded the disposable glasses and plates they were served the juices and sherbets in on the roads. The municipal corporation and the district administration have however started a garbage disposal campaign, officials said, adding that if the weather remains favourable, the city is expected to be clean again in about a fortnight.
