Five American soldiers were shot at the Fort Stewart base in the state of Georgia on Wednesday, and the suspected shooter is in custody, US Army officials said. The soldiers were treated on site and then transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment, Fort Stewart said in a social media post. 'There is no active threat to the community,' the post said. Parts of the base in southeast Georgia were locked down after the shooter was reported on the sprawling Army post, a spokesperson said. A post on a Fort Stewart social media account told all personnel in the locked down area to 'stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors'. Located about 64km (40 miles) southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and family members.

Court blocks Hong Kong violin teacher's bid to fight eviction from public flat
A Hong Kong court has blocked an intended judicial challenge by a public housing tenant against an eviction order after finding it reasonable for authorities to conclude that she was not living in the flat. The High Court on Wednesday handed down a written judgment declining to give permission for violin teacher Tang Wai-yin to lodge a judicial review over the Housing Authority's decision to reclaim possession of her one-person flat in Tin Shui Wai. Authorities have stepped up efforts to tackle suspected abuse of public housing resources after Kwong Kau, the former father-in-law of slain model Abby Choi Tin-fung, was found in 2023 to have owned a luxury home and a subsidised flat. Tang complained that investigators from the Housing Department's public housing resources management subsection had made 18 sudden inspections of her flat at Tin Tsz Estate last year when she had gone out to work or to take care of her family. Skeleton of elderly woman found in Hong Kong public flat, second case in 3 months
The skeletal remains of an elderly woman have been discovered in a Hong Kong public rental flat, the second such case in three months. The situation came to light at 10am on Wednesday when officers from the Housing Department visited the home of the 77-year-old at Shing Yat House in Kwai Shing East Estate to execute an eviction after the order had apparently been ignored for months. A police source said the force found no signs of foul play and contacted the woman's two sons. Investigators reportedly found sales receipts in the flat dating back to November 2023, with none bearing later dates. It was understood that the deceased, who had suffered from depression for more than 20 years, had previously been the subject of an investigation under the department's 'well-off tenants' policy, which requires public housing residents whose income or assets exceed certain limits to either pay higher rents or move out. In October last year, the department issued a notice asking her to explain the origins of certain assets, but she did not respond, the source said.
