Beloved 90s beer returns to UK supermarkets after being axed in 2003

Metro28-05-2025
After a two-decade hiatus, one of the UK's most popular beers is now back on supermarket shelves.
Double Diamond, first brewed in 1879 by Allsopp & Sons of Burton upon Trent, was among the nation's best-sellers from the 1950s right through to the early 1990s.
While drinkers loved its classic pale ale flavour, the brand became a household name due to its distinctive red and yellow logo and catchy advertising slogans: 'Double Diamonds works wonders' and 'Only here for the beer.'
However, over the years it fell out of favour, and Double Diamond gradually disappeared before Carlsberg (which had taken over Allsopp's) discontinued off-trade sales in 2003 and later ceased production entirely.
Fans were overjoyed when the brewery announced its return to pubs late last year, with punters who tested Double Diamond 2.0 on draft describing it as 'stunning'.
And now, the 'session' beer is also available to enjoy at home; priced at £5.75 (or £5 for Clubcard holders) for a pack of four 440ml bottles, in store and online at Tesco.
Die-hards may notice a difference between the original and the relaunched version, as it's 'brewed to a new and improved recipe' with a slightly lower ABV of 3.8%.
But Jamie Allsopp, re-founder of Allsopp & Sons, said he hopes this tweaked iteration 'will find a place in the affections of new drinkers, as well as those that haven't tasted it in 30 years'.
He added: 'Double Diamond is our A-list star, a beer so popular it was up in lights on Piccadilly Circus, so famous the government considered nationalising it, a beer that worked such wonders it sold 50 million pints a year.'

The Lucky Saint Pub, Marylebone

Double Diamond isn't the only iconic brand that's returned to the high street after time away. More Trending
Four years on from the company's collapse in 2018, Toys R Us was relaunched as a concession in WHSmith stores – and proved such a hit, it was rolled out nationwide.
Then there was Topshop, which – despite refusing to confirm rumours of a new bricks-and-mortar shop – recently announced it was 'kicking off the first phase of a much anticipated return', creating a frenzy of nostalgia on Instagram.

MAFS UK star Rozz Darlington gives birth after ill-fated wedding and reveals sweet name

Married at First Sight star Rozz Darlington has welcomed a baby girl with her partner Jordan Morris, two years on from her ill-fated wedding on the E4 show Married At First Sight star Rozz Darlington his given birth to a baby girl. The florist, 30, first became known when she met and married Thomas Kriaras on the E4 reality show in 2023, memorably arriving to her own nuptials on a tractor. The pair did not stay together, and Rozz later struck up a relationship with Jordan Morris. ‌ The pair have been together for over two years, and on Saturday, she announced that she and her partner have welcomed a daughter. Alongside a snap of herself, Jordan and the newborn in a hospital bed, she wrote on Instagram: "A baby Girl!!! Arabella Morris - Darlington has arrived! 8th August weighing 6lb 10! We are so in love." ‌ MAFS co-star Adrienne Naylor said: "Aww congratulations," whilst fellow bride Sophie Brown said: "wahhhhh huge congrats!" Several fans of the TV star also flooded the comments section of her post with their wellwishes, with one writing: "Congratulations to you all, beautiful name, beautiful baby xx", and another said: "Aww you did it! What a gorgeous little angel" and embellished their comment with a heart eyes emoji. It comes after a Strictly Come Dancing star pulls out of show as he makes career announcement. ‌ Earlier this year, Rozz made the surprise announcement that she was expecting with an adorable video on social media. Alongside the video, Rozz said: "We've been keeping a secret!! Baby Morris - Darlington Due August. A crazy start to 2025!" Rozz and Thomas endured rocky time on the show together after they said their vows decided to call it a day before the series was done. The TV star moved on with Jordan, thanks to a little help from her neighbour. Recounting the sweet start of their love story, Rozz shared: "I was out with my neighbour in Manchester and she said, 'My cousin just messaged saying, are you out with Rosaline Darlington?' I then thought he's cute and added him on Instagram." ‌ Rozz and Jordan went Instagram official in June last year, yet Rozz confessed that going public was nerve-wracking, as she worried about potential negative reactions towards Jordan due to her relationship drama with Thomas. She told OK!: "At first I was like, 'Oh God, what are people going to be like?' "But people have been generally nice towards Jordan since we went Instagram official. I've had a few comments, but people just form their opinion of you as long as it's hate towards me and not him," she said. ‌ "For me, Thomas is the nation's sweetheart and he is amazing, people do love him, so I didn't want anyone to be rude towards Jordan or for him to receive any hate." Rozz added: "He's not like Thomas, but I was apprehensive because people judge others and I wanted to protect Jordan from all of that. I put myself out there in the public eye, Jordan didn't, so it's very difficult. But you've just got to do what's right for you. Time moves on, people heal and people change." Rozz recalled how romance blossomed between her and Jordan after they enjoyed a date night out in Cheshire at the start of the year. "It was dead relaxing and chilled it was just silly from the get-go," she told the outlet. "On the show, I was quite guarded and scared of falling in love when it came down to it, but it's been easy. We've both got the same sense of humour, we're quite silly, we don't take each other too seriously and I feel like personality is a huge part. You want someone to be like your best friend."

Katie Price and Princess Andre 'feud' deepens: 18th birthday 'blow out' and 'jealousy'

Katie Price's podcast rant about her daughter Princess Andre's blossoming fame and TV show appears to have backfired on the glamour model as she's branded 'attention-seeking' FRESH claims over Katie Price's 'feud' with her daughter Princess can be revealed today. ‌ In a series of blistering revelations, insiders have accused Katie, 47, of: ‌ Missing a planned morning meet-up with Princess Andre on her 18th birthday to party abroad instead Trying to 'insert herself' into Princess's success as her daughter embarks on a fledgling showbiz career Attention-seeking behaviour on the eve of Princess's new ITV show to overshadow the launch. ‌ Katie has made a number of claims in the days before her daughter's reality series, The Princess Diaries, launches on ITV2 at 9pm tonight. It comes after Katie Price reaches out to Harvey's lookalike half-brother but fears 'he's too scared'. The mum-of-five said she was banned from her daughter's 18th birthday party and that her former management team – who look after ex-husband Peter Andre and Princess – did not want her on the show as they considered her 'trash'. Speaking on her podcast, Katie claimed: 'Princess was like 'I'm having a party'. And I wasn't invited because it was for 'filming'.' ‌ The mum-of-five said she was banned from her daughter's 18th birthday party and that her former management team – who look after ex-husband Peter Andre and Princess – did not want her on the show as they considered her 'trash'. Speaking on her podcast, Katie claimed: 'Princess was like 'I'm having a party'. And I wasn't invited because it was for 'filming'.' ‌ She added: 'The fact is there's stuff my daughter is doing and I'm not allowed to be seen at any of it.' But insiders claimed her version of events was far from the truth. They said the 18-year-old had arranged to see her mum on the morning of her birthday in June in London – but Katie failed to appear. ‌ A source said: 'It was all in the diary but then Katie claimed she couldn't make it as she was abroad. It was disappointing. 'For Katie to then say she was banned from the afternoon's filmed party when she was the no-show in the morning is just beyond belief.' ‌ The former Celebrity Big Brother winner was later pictured partying in Ibiza, and then Dubai. She also reportedly accidentally shared a happy birthday Instagram message to Princess – 36 hours before her daughter's big day. Insiders are perplexed by Katie's attempts to 'repeatedly insert herself into her daughter's career'. ‌ The model herself claimed: 'I have not been allowed to go on any photoshoots, signings or Superdrug openings or anything like that. I'm not welcome.' But the source said: 'Why is she making this all about her? What sort of person on the eve of her daughter's show, starts throwing all these grenades and believes she knows what's best, and should be given equal billing? 'It's Princess's life, her career.' ‌ A second source added: 'It's so unfair that Princess is going through all this when it is her show and it's about her… 'Pete keeps quiet about the whole situation with Katie and just wants to support his children.' ‌ Some question whether Katie could be jealous of her daughter's success. The source said: 'Princess's career is flourishing. 'It was already predicted before she's going to be the next Kylie Jenner and now she's set to become a millionaire by next year.' ‌ Three-times-married Katie's behaviour has puzzled some of her former partners. One source close to an ex told this newspaper that it was 'ludicrous' for her to have hit out at her former manager at The CAN Group. Katie, who also has son Junior, 20, with Peter, had claimed: 'I've always said over my dead body would I want her managing my kids. She doesn't like me.' ‌ But a source close to an ex claimed: 'When Katie was at the height of her problems, including her drink-drive arrest a few years ago, she approached her former manager for help. She was in such a bad way but her manager was really happy to help... She organised a job but Katie didn't end up doing it. To turn around now and claim she wants nothing to do with her is nonsense. She wasn't saying that at the time.' Friends say Princess, who lives with her 52-year-old dad, step-mum Emily, 35, and their three young children, loves her mum but that it had not always been easy for her growing up. ‌ In her new series the teen influencer lifts the lid on her tumultuous childhood, including how tough it was when Katie split from her third husband, Kieran Hayler, in 2018. She said: 'My mum, being heartbroken, didn't deal with it in the best way. 'She went through a dark time. It was hard for me because I saw things kids don't need to see, and my mum wasn't emotionally able to be there.' Princess read stories at the time about her mum, including her driving bans, divorce and bankruptcy hearings. ‌ She said: 'I would go into school and have people ask me questions about what they had seen in the papers and I would go home and cry.' The teenager's relationship with her mother is much stronger now. 'I'm still not really healed from what has happened but Mum is such a different person and has really fixed herself,' she said, before describing her mum as 'my best friend'. She added: 'She is so unpredictable. She just lives life and doesn't care, and I really look up to that.' The CAN Group said: 'We would never advise a client on their personal life unless asked and we have never stopped anyone seeing their families.'
