Ireland's longest-surviving person with EB receives 2,000 messages ahead of 41st birthday
Emma Fogarty, from Abbeyleix Co Laois, celebrates her 41st birthday on Wednesday, but said she is also celebrating beating the current life expectancy for recessive dystrophic EB, which is 30 to 35 years, by yet another year.
"I fought to go to college, I fought to live independently, I fought to learn to drive, I fought cancer twice, I fought to get to 40 - I'm still fighting," she said.
A birthday message from a well-wisher, one of over 2,000 to be compiled in a book, said: "You are a powerhouse - an inspiration in how you push through to raise awareness despite a huge cost to your own health.
"I don't know how you have the strength but wherever you derive it from - I hope it continues to sustain you. Happy birthday."
Last October, Ms Fogarty marked her 40th birthday by taking part in the Irish Life Dublin Marathon alongside her close friend actor Colin Farrell, who ran the entire event and pushed her for the final 4km.
"Some moments stay with you forever. Crossing the finish line at the Irish Life Dublin Marathon is one of them," she said.
"I feel happy whenever I think about it. It's a great memory to have."
The friends originally hoped they would raise €400,000 for Debra, the national charity helping people living in Ireland with the rare skin condition and ultimately brought in almost €1 million.
Funds raised during 'Emma's Run to 40' campaign are being used for pioneering research and vital and bespoke support for everyone with EB in Ireland.

Canada pushing to include Indigenous rights in United Nations plastics treaty
OTTAWA — Canada is pushing to bring language recognizing the rights of Indigenous peoples back into a United Nations plastics pollution treaty. Delegates from more than 170 countries are in Geneva to resume negotiations on a treaty that was supposed to be finalized last year. Countries are at odds on how far the legally binding agreement should go, with many nations opposing caps on plastic production. Following negotiations in South Korea in November, which ended without an agreement, the draft version of the treaty removed references to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Canada, with the backing of 45 other countries, presented a proposal Tuesday to put UNDRIP language back in to the treaty. Scientists estimate the world disposes of more than 350 million tonnes of plastic every year, with less than one-tenth being recycled and more than one-fifth ending up in the environment. Juan Soto spoils Gavin Williams' no-hit bid with 9th-inning home run, but Guardians hold on to top Mets

Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams threw 8 1/3 no-hit innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday and had the green light to go all the way despite having the highest pitch count of the MLB season. But Juan Soto spoiled the party. The Mets slugger hit a deep fly ball to center field on a 1-0 fastball that Williams left over the plate. Centerfielder Angel Martinez gave chase and made a play on the ball at the wall. But the ball snuck over his glove and just over the wall for a home run before bouncing back into the field of play. The home run was Soto's 26th of the season and stood as New York's only run of the day as Cleveland held on for a 4-1 victory. MLB is still seeking its first solo no-hitter since Blake Snell no-hit the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 2, 2024 while pitching for the San Francisco Giants. Three Chicago Cubs pitchers combined to no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 4 of last season. But Guardians manager Stephen Vogt didn't hesitate to send him back out for the ninth to face the top of the Mets order. Vogt didn't get the last out, but he finished the game with the win, having thrown 8 2/3 innings with six strikeouts, four walks issued and the single hit allowed to Soto. He threw 126 pitches. The effort lowered Williams' ERA to 3.17 for the season, which would stand as the best of his three-season MLB career. The Guardians are still seeking their first no-hitter since Len Barker threw a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays in 1981.
