Lionesses ‘devastated' at death of young footballer, 10, hit by car on sports pitch

Independent07-03-2025

The Lionesses have paid tribute after a young footballer was killed when a car ploughed through her training pitch where she was trying to realise her dreams of playing for Manchester United.
Poppy Atkinson, 10, was killed by a car that smashed through a barrier and hit two girls at a football session at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club on Wednesday evening.
In an emotional tribute, Poppy's family said she idolised England stars Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway, as well as Kobbie Mainoo in the men's team and Argentine Lionel Messi.
Stanway, who is also from Cumbria, posted a tribute to Poppy on X, writing: 'Devastating. Sending all my love and condolences to the family and all affected.'
The Bayern Munich player added: 'The football world will miss you Poppy. You will always play a special role.'
Leah Williamson, captain of the Lionesses, posted on Instagram: 'Such tragic, tragic news! My thoughts are with family, friends and teammates. I can't begin to imagine your loss. RIP Poppy.'
A second child, an eight-year-old girl also from Kendal, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Cumbria Constabulary said there is no indication to suggest that this collision was a deliberate act.
A 40-year-old man from Lancaster arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released from custody. He remains under investigation.
Paying tribute to her, Poppy's family said: 'Poppy was the focal point of our lives, everything for us revolved around Poppy's love for football. Poppy touched so many lives, it was easy to see why, her energy, character, spirit and passion for football was infectious and touched huge numbers of people.'
They added: 'The hole in our lives and so many around us that Poppy leaves is enormous, we will never be whole again. This world has lost a spirit like no other, she was a force of nature. She was so special, she was too good for this world.'
An emotional video from March 2024 has since resurfaced on Instagram, showing one of her coaches urging a disappointed-looking Poppy not to be afraid to make mistakes on the pitch.
In the viral clip Poppy, seemingly inspired by his speech, points to the back of her Lionel Messi strip and the coach said: 'Even Messi does it. The more comfortable you are making mistakes, the better player you're going to be.'
Her beloved Manchester United also put out a statement responding to the tragedy: "On behalf of Ella, Kobbie and everyone at Manchester United, we send our heartfelt condolences to Poppy's family and friends for their devastating loss. Rest in peace Poppy."
Poppy played for Kendal United's under 12 girls' team, and the club described her as "our much-loved player".
"Poppy's love for football shone through to all who met her and she was an inspiration to her teammates," a spokesperson said.

Casemiro claims season has been 'successful' despite Man Utd misery

Even though Manchester United achieved their lowest finish in Premier League history, midfielder Casemiro stated that the 2024/25 season has been one of the "most successful" of his career to date Casemiro has surprisingly deemed this season one of his "most successful" after earning the trust of Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, despite a challenging period for the team. The Brazilian midfielder appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford in January, after talks of a move to Saudi Arabia were bandied about last summer and re-emerged during the winter window. Yet when the dust settled, Casemiro remained with United. After initially falling out of Portuguese coach Amorim's favour, by around February he began to carve out more regular playing time in the Premier League and European competitions. ‌ The 33-year-old became integral to the squad that battled its way to the Europa League final, noticing an uptick in appearances as the season drew to a close. ‌ Casemiro, while on duty with the Brazil national team, has now shed light on discussions held with Amorim earlier in his tenure, boldly stating that, for him, personally, it was indeed a successful year. "This year has been one of the most important years of my career, if not the most. Even because of the coach's choice [Ruben Amorim]. I was left out [of the options], but I never stopped working," Casemiro revealed. "That's my great success. Everyone wants to talk about titles, victories and big games, but when you don't play and you manage to change the mind of a coach who arrives and doesn't play you. "You end up coming back, and now you're being praised by the coach who at first practically didn't count on you... it was one of my most successful years. "These are things that end up happening internally. I'm one of those people who, when things happen internally, I don't like to say too much." ‌ Despite United's struggles, Casemiro donned the Red Devils' kit 42 times this term, netting five times and contributing three assists. His personal comeback stands in stark contrast to United's disappointing campaign, which saw them lumber to their lowest Premier League ranking in history, finishing 15th, and suffering 14 defeats, a figure not seen since 1990. The Brazilian midfielder faced severe criticism in September following a harrowing first-half display against Liverpool, where his error led to Luis Diaz opening the scoring after just 35 minutes. Not long after, Casemiro lost possession again, allowing Diaz to score once more before Erik ten Hag subbed him off at the break, with United eventual 3-0 losers. ‌ Casemiro shed light on his discussions with his manager during challenging times, stating (via the Manchester Evening News): "I don't think there's been such a big relapse in my individual aspect, but when the club isn't playing well, changes are needed. "I spoke to him [Amorim] and he told me that it was more a question of choosing to play, that I should wait for the opportunity. Of course, he was open with me. "He said it was his choice, nothing against me. I had no choice but to carry on working and wait for the opportunity. When I played, I lived up to what he asked." Man Utd star's emotional message after being released by Amorim – 'Once a red'

Several Manchester United academy graduates have joined veteran first teamers in being released by the Red Devils as Ruben Amorim looks to build his new era at the club Manchester United academy starlet James Nolan has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the club after parting ways with the Red Devils. It was reported early last month that three youngsters - Nolan, Jack Kingdon and Sam Murray - would be allowed to leave as free agents this summer. United published their retained list on Monday and the aforementioned players' departures were made official. Nolan spent last season on loan with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in Scottish League One, where he made 33 appearances and scored his first career goal. ‌ The 19-year-old defender will now look for a new club to begin his next chapter. Taking to Instagram, Nolan wrote: "My time at Manchester United has now come to an end. ‌ "From joining at the age of seven to now leaving at 19 it has been my second home. I just want to say a massive thank you to the coaches, players and everyone at the club for making my time unforgettable. I've made memories to last a life time. "Once a Red always a Red." Nolan is a versatile player and mainly played at full-back for Caledonian Thistle. Central defender Jack Kingdon also shared his gratitude in a similar social media post, saying: 'After nearly 5 years at this club, it is my time to move onto the next chapter in my career. 'The experiences this club has given me I will always be grateful for. The lads, staff and fans have been outstanding with me whilst I've been here. "Manchester United will always have a place in my heart, but it is time for the next chapter. Thank you, Reds." Kingdon as an academy product was instrumental in the Under-18 treble-winning team in 2023/2024. The 19-year-old, who is a Scotland youth international, was also excellent on loan with Rochdale after signing for the club in the winter window. ‌ It's understood that Kingdon was on the verge of signing for Ineos-owned FC Lausanne Sport on loan in January before he signed for Rochdale, who he helped reach the National League play-offs. Academy goalkeepers Tom Myles and Tom Wooster have also been released this summer, with the official club website's statement reading: 'The Academy is proud of all of our departing young players throughout the age groups. They will be supported in securing contracts at new clubs, provided with a bespoke aftercare programme, and will always have a lifelong association with Manchester United.' ‌ Joining them in the mass clearout after a disastrous season for the first team are established stars Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof. Tom Heaton is also included on the list of free transfers, however, the club remains in discussions with the goalkeeper about a new deal that would see him remain part of the squad for the 2025/26 season. It is understood that there will be a limited number of spots available in Ruben Amorim's squad next season as the Portuguese head coach looks to transform the club's fortunes with new additions.

Arsenal interested in sensational £70m swoop for Man Utd star to rival Chelsea

Arsenal have been named as one of the clubs interested in signing Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United this summer. United are prepared to sell the Argentina international to help fund another overhaul of the squad with Matheus Cunha already brought in for Ruben Amorim's rebuild. Garnacho is perhaps the most valuable asset in the United squad, with the winger effectively sealing his own fate after publicly criticising his manager for not starting him in the Europa League final against Tottenham. Reports last week claimed three Premier League clubs are interested in signing the 20-year-old this summer along with Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen with Erik ten Hag seeking a reunion with the player in Germany. Chelsea were keen on Garnacho during the January transfer window with the Blues still monitoring his situation. Aston Villa have also been named as an interested party. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Reports in Argentina have sensationally claimed Arsenal are the third club. Leading Argentine journalist Gastón Edul claimed on his YouTube channel that Garnacho's preference is to remain in the Premier League, having turned down an offer from Napoli earlier in the year. When asked which Premier League teams have shown interest in the United star, Edul said: 'Chelsea and Arsenal'. Arsenal are hoping to bring in another wide option this summer with Rodrygo, Anthony Gordon and Nico Williams among their targets. The Gunners are hoping to finalise the arrival of Martin Zubimendi soon and remain in talks to sign RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko. United meanwhile have set a new price tag for Garnacho with the Independent claiming they want £70million for the former Atletico Madrid youngster. Garnacho was dropped by Amorim for the Manchester derby back in December but forced his way back into the team after the turn of the year with the United boss praising his application and willingness to adapt to his system and demands. The cast and circumstances are different, but the tension between Ruben Amorim and Alejandro Garnacho has drawn parallels with another ugly stand-off that engulfed the club not long ago. Jadon Sancho's very public falling out with Erik ten Hag in August 2023 signalled the end of his time at the club – even if United are still scrambling to remove him from their books. The former Borussia Dortmund winger was accused of failing to meet the required standards in training – something Garnacho is certainly not guilty of with Amorim praising the Argentine for his determination and eagerness to adapt to his methods earlier this year. But openly challenging his manager's decisions is a rotten look. We will never know what might have happened had Garnacho started against Tottenham in the Europa League final but the winger has been as guilty as anyone of missing big chances this season. Arguing he has played every round of the knockout stages leading to the final is a valid one – but just one goal in the Europa League this season suggests Amorim's decision had its own merits. Garnacho can and should be doing more, something he and his brother may have overlooked as the red mist descended in May. The bigger picture is Garnacho openly defied his manager at a moment when the club is reeling, staggering towards the end of a disastrous season that has broken records in mediocrity. United cannot afford to let the tension draw out like it did between Sancho and ten Hag. And with the club desperate to raise additional funds in the summer transfer window, one of their tougher decisions may have just got a little easier. Tony Mogan | Assistant Sports Editor, Metro The winger was a first-team regular again but found himself left out of the starting XI for the Europa League final against Tottenham with Mason Mount selected ahead of him. More Trending 'Until we reached the final, I played every round. And I played 20 minutes today – I don't know,' Garnacho said. 'I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next.' Those comments reportedly promoted a furious reaction from Amorim days later, with the manager telling the player 'to pray' he finds a new club this summer. Garnacho was subsequently left out of the squad for the final game of the Premier League season against Aston Villa but travelled with the squad to Asia for post-season friendly matches in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
