Former Sri Lanka player Dassanayake earns second stint as USA coach
New Delhi [India], May 15 (ANI): Former Sri Lanka and Canada international Pubudu Dassanayake has been appointed as the new head coach of the USA's men's team, as per the official website of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Dassanayake replaces Stuart Law in the top job, after the former Australia batter left the position towards the end of last year after leading the side in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup they co-hosted with the West Indies.
It is the second time Dassanayake has held the role as head coach with the USA, with the 54-year-old having previously enjoyed a three-year stint in charge from 2016-2019.
During that time, Dassanayake helped the USA win their ODI status and establish themselves as a growing nation within the cricketing landscape.
Dassanayake has since held head coaching jobs with Nepal and Canada and helped the latter to their first T20 World Cup appearance last year in the USA and the West Indies.
With the USA already qualified for next year's T20 World Cup in India, Dassanayake is looking forward to leading the side in another global tournament and building on the platform he helped establish last decade.
'It's an honour to return and lead the USA Men's National Team,' Dassanayake said, as quoted from the official website of the ICC.
'I'm proud of what we accomplished during my previous time here, and I see tremendous potential in this group to reach even greater heights,' he added.
'I look forward to working closely with the players and staff to continue building something meaningful for USA Cricket,' he noted.
Dassanayake played 11 Tests and 16 ODIs for Sri Lanka towards the end of last century, before moving to Canada and playing in their national side at the end of his playing career. (ANI)

Rob Walter hired as New Zealand's cricket head coach after leaving South Africa job
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Rob Walter has been hired to coach the New Zealand men's cricket team in all three formats as a replacement for Gary Stead. Walter coached South Africa's teams in the one-day and Twenty20 formats from January 2023 until April this year. Before then he coached New Zealand's Otago province for five years and at the Central Districts association. He guided South Africa to the semifinals of the 2023 World Cup and the Champions Trophy earlier this year in the ODI format and to the final of the T20 World Cup last year. Stead was New Zealand head coach in all three formats from 2018 until earlier this week, when New Zealand Cricket announced it was seeking a replacement. Stead announced in March he was stepping down from his roles in the limited-overs formats but intended to remain as test coach. New Zealand Cricket said it preferred a coach to lead the Black Caps in all three formats. 'It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series will be contested,' Walter said. 'I just can't wait to get started. It's exciting, it's challenging and the opportunity is enormous.' The 49-year-old Walter was high on New Zealand Cricket's list of preferred candidates from the moment it decided to pursue another all-formats coach, ruling out Stead who guided the Black Caps to the inaugural World Test Championship. 'Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree,' NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said. 'His success in New Zealand's domestic game combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps.' "I got chills": Billy Bob Thornton on returning to 'Friday Night Lights' football field
Washington DC [US], June 4 (ANI): Actor and filmmaker Billy Bob Thornton opened up on how he felt returning to the football field featured in the 2004 film 'Friday Night Lights'. Speaking on a panel at the ATX TV Festival alongside his co-stars from the Paramount+ series 'Landman', Thornton shared how much of the show is filmed in the oil boomtowns of West Texas. 'Last year we went to the Midland -- Odessa area,' Thornton said. 'So 'Friday Night Lights' was 20 years ago, and I had spent a lot of time on the field, and I walked out on the field and I got chills,' reported People. Thornton played high school football coach Gary Gaines in the 2004 film 'Friday Night Lights', directed by Peter Berg and also starring Tim McGraw, Amber Heard and Connie Britton. On December 11, Peacock announced that an adaptation of the Emmy Award-winning football series was officially in development. In 'Landman', Thornton plays an oilman named Tommy Norris who is always looking out for his daughter Ainsley (played by Michelle Randolph), according to People. Although most of the film 'Landman' was shot in and around Fort Worth, Texas, Thornton said filming in Odessa, where he shot the 2004 film, was 'a really great moment.' 'It's a real special area, it's a wonderful place to be because of the people out there,' Thornton said, adding that the Landman cast and crew 'hope to make people aware of Texas and what it really is and how good the people are down here,' reported People. He added, 'These days in the climate we are in, people hear you are working in Texas and people think you are going to get shot down there. I told my daughter, 'It's like being in LA but you just see more cowboy hats.' ' Thornton noted that filming Landman in Texas is integral to the show's authenticity. 'There is something you have to consider when you are doing a movie project,' he said. 'It's not always the land, the other thing is they don't consider the background actors. Sri Lanka chosen as neutral venue for Women's Cricket World Cup
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Pakistan will play all its league games at a neutral venue in Sri Lanka after ICC announced venues and dates of Women's 50-over World Cup in India on Monday. Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati and Indore will host the games in India with Colombo in Sri Lanka chosen as a neutral venue. Sri Lanka was selected according to hybrid model agreed by the International Cricket Council, Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Pakistan Cricket Board. Using this hybrid model India previously played the men's Champions Trophy games in Dubai after its government refused to send its team to Pakistan for the tournament in February. The political ties between the two nuclear armed South Asian neighbors have been particularly tense in recent months, with the countries stepping back from the brink of war in May. The ICC didn't reveal the complete details of the Sept. 30-Nov. 2 World Cup, but said the tournament begins at Bengaluru with the game involving host India. Bengaluru will also host the second semifinal on Oct. 30. The ICC has placed Colombo as a standby venue for the first semifinal in case Pakistan qualifies, otherwise it will be played at Guwahati. Similarly Bengaluru will host the final, but if Pakistan reaches that stage, Colombo will then be the venue. The eight teams include host India, defending champion Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Pakistan and Bangladesh took the last two spots at the qualifiers played in Lahore after West Indies narrowly missed out on net run-rate to Bangladesh. Lord's to host women's T20 World Cup final The Oval will host both the semifinals of women's T20 World Cup on June 30 and July 2 next year with Lord's hosting the final on July 5. The tournament, which begins on June 12 at Edgbaston, will be competed by 12 nations, two more than the last year's edition. Manchester, Leeds, Bristol and Southampton are the other venues of the 24-day tournament. Australia, England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and defending champion New Zealand have already qualified for the tournament.
