Andhra's free bus travel scheme to be launched on Aug 15: Minister
Last Updated: Amaravati, Aug 6 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Minister K Parthasarathy on Wednesday announced that the state government's flagship free bus travel scheme for women, a key poll promise, will be rolled out across the state from August 15. The scheme is expected to cost Rs 1,942 crore annually, or approximately Rs 162 crore per month. Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the minister said the scheme—named 'Stree Shakti' (women's power)—will be implemented in full across the state. 'I am happy to inform you that free bus travel for women will begin on August 15," said the State Information and Public Relations Minister, noting that the initiative aims to empower women and support their development across sectors, including employment and education. He dismissed reports suggesting that 'Stree Shakti' would be limited to select districts, clarifying that it will be implemented statewide. 'There were reports that the scheme would be limited to districts, but it has been decided to roll it out across the state," he said. Of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation's (APSRTC) total fleet of 11,449 buses, 8,456—nearly 75 per cent—will operate under the 'Stree Shakti' scheme. Services such as Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express will offer free travel to women. The scheme is expected to benefit up to 1.4 crore women annually. Additionally, Parthasarathy said each family could save up to Rs 1,000 per month through this initiative. State govt to support handloom sector, bear GST on textiles
Vijayawada: The state government has announced several key decisions to support the handloom sector and its workers. Following a review meeting on the handloom department at the state Secretariat, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu approved measures aimed at reviving the industry. The Chief Minister noted that the handloom sector is second only to agriculture in its importance to the state's economy and emphasised the need to support the workers who depend on it. Based on his recent visit to Jammalamadugu, where he met with a handloom family, the Chief Minister has directed officials to implement the measures including provision of 200 units of free electricity for looms and 500 units for power looms. Officials have been instructed to begin the implementation process immediately. In a significant move, the state government has decided to fully absorb the GST on handloom textiles. The state will pay the GST to the Central government, fulfilling an election promise. Officials explained that this will make handloom products more affordable, boosting sales and benefiting weavers. A thrift fund of Rs 5 crore will be established for the welfare of handloom workers. The Chief Minister has ordered that these decisions be implemented starting this month, coinciding with National Handloom Day on August 7. During the meeting, officials also presented the Chief Minister with 10 national awards that Andhra Pradesh's handloom products have recently won. The state also secured its first award in the 'One District, One Product' category.

Citizens face inconvenience as AP Police Seva app down again
1 2 Vijayawada: AP Police Seva mobile application, once a key digital platform for lodging complaints, verifying social media news, and accessing a host of citizen services, is currently non-functional and has been removed from both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The disruption began during the 2024 general elections and marks the second such outage—earlier seen during the arrest of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu in September 2023. Launched in September 2020, the app was designed to reduce physical visits to police stations by enabling online complaint registration, tracking case progress, paying challans, and availing other services. It offered 85 features, including requesting home surveillance during absence, background verification for employees or tenants, and real-time updates on public safety. One of its standout components focused on women's safety, offering GPS-enabled alerts about high-risk areas based on geo-tagged crime data. The platform was widely praised for promoting citizen-friendly policing and bridging the gap between the police and the public. The sudden unavailability of the app has forced citizens to revert to traditional methods of police interaction, slowing down grievance redressal and affecting transparency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These T-Shirt Fails are Just Too Hilarious Undo Speaking to TOI, CH Srikanth, inspector general of police, technical services, said, "The app is currently being upgraded with new services and is under testing via the Google Play Store.
