Secret Behind Mohammed Siraj's Stamina Reveale: 'Rare Biryani, No Pizzas Or...'

Mohammed Siraj's brother has revealed the secret behind his stamina that is being praised all around the world.
Mohammed Siraj's yorker that got Gus Atkinson clean-bowled and sealed India's win in the Oval Test to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was bowled at 143 kmph. It was one of Siraj's fastest balls in the series, and it was clear that the pacer didn't care that this was his 1113th ball of the rubber, the most for anyone.
Siraj was the only pacer across the two teams to bowl in every innings available to his team, and though he had moments and overs of low, underwhelming performances, he never relented in his efforts. When he got it right, the ball swung both ways, seamed unpredictably off the pitch, and gave no time for the batters to react.
He made it talk with an 80-overs-old ball, which is rare and unprecedented, and although some of it was down to sheer luck, Siraj made the most of it, perhaps more than anyone in his position could. In an interview after India's win, Siraj's brother, Mohammed Ismail, revealed that it was all due to his work on fitness.
'Yes, absolutely. He focuses a lot on fitness. He avoids junk food and maintains a disciplined diet. Even living in Hyderabad, he rarely eats biryani, maybe occasionally, and only if it's homemade. But no pizzas or fast food, he's very disciplined about his body," Ismail told India Today.
After the fourth day of the Test, bowling coach Morne Morkel had said that before the match began, the team was concerned about Siraj's physical and mental well-being due to his excessive workload, but the pacer rebuffed them immediately, saying he wanted to win it for India. And he did.
'100%, he never gives up, even when he wasn't selected for the Champions Trophy squad, he didn't let it demotivate him. Instead, he worked even harder. He hit the gym, focused on his fitness, and practiced hard every day — morning and evening. He identified what was missing and fixed it," Ismail added.
Siraj ended the series as the highest wicket-taker with 23 scalps and won the Player of the Match for the Oval Test.

‘I was never the villain, I was made into one': Oval pitch curator who irked Gautam Gambhir after epic India vs England encounter

India came back from a seemingly hopeless situation to win the Oval Test and draw the five-match series against England 2-2. It marked the end of a series that was filled with incidents. While most of it happened on the field, India head coach Gautam Gambhir's argument with Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis before the start of the fifth Test was easily the most prominent off-field flare-up over the course of the series. Gambhir firing angry words at Fortis is what went viral first and the Indian head coach received some criticism for his choice of words to describe the latter's profession. However, details later emerged about what it is that irked Gambhir so much and that led to Fortis being accused of favouring England at best and having a colonial mindset towards the Indians at worst. The track that Fortis and his ground staff prepared, and maintained admirably in a Test that was frequently interrupted by rain, coughed up a thriller, though, with India winning it by just six runs – their lowest margin of victory by runs in Test cricket. 'Well, I was never the villain, I was made into one,' Fortis is quoted as saying by PTI. 'Hope you guys enjoyed the show and the atmosphere was like the IPL. It was a great game.' Indian head coaches Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak were asked by Fortis, through a messenger, to stay 2.5 metres away from the playing surface. He also shouted at the Indian support staff to not take a 'cooler' to the ground. Batting coach Kotak, who was close to the action and played the pacifier when an animated Gambhir was talking to Fortis, gave details about the net session altercation. 'When we went to see the pitch, we were asked by someone to keep a 2.5-metre distance. This was surprising. The Test would be in a few days and we were wearing joggers. So it felt a bit odd. We all have been on the ground enough, we have played so much cricket. Curators are possessive about the ground and the square but they need to understand that they are speaking to highly skilled and intelligent people.' Kotak said.

Shubman Gill to compete with Ben Stokes, Wiaan Mulder for ICC Player of the Month

India captain Shubman Gill was on Wednesday named among the three nominees for ICC's Player of the Month award for July along with South Africa's Wiaan Mulder and England skipper Ben Stokes. Gill led India remarkably in the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England as his young side emerged with a hard-fought 2-2 draw, a series in which the 25-year-old rewrote batting records. Gill scored 754 runs in the series against England with four centuries, including a double ton at 75.40 to break legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record (732) for the highest run tally for an Indian captain in a five-Test series. Gill's returns are now also the second-best behind Sir Donald Bradman (810 runs) in the all-time list for captains. 'Shubman Gill had a sensational month, amassing 567 runs at an impeccable average of 94.50 in three Tests during India's gripping series in England,' the ICC wrote on its website. 'He played a starring role in India's record-breaking win at Edgbaston, where he scored a monumental 269 in the first innings followed by 161 in the second. His combined 430 runs across the two innings is the second highest tally, next only to Graham Gooch's 456,' it added. The ICC said Gill carried the baton from 'all-time great' Virat Kohli at No.4. 'His consistency at No. 4, carrying on the baton from all-time great Virat Kohli, provided stability and flair in equal measure, and combined with his extraordinary captaincy in his debut series,' it said. In his maiden outing as South Africa captain, Mulder struck a mammoth 367 not out against Zimbabwe but declared his team's innings when he could have broken legendary Brian Lara's record for highest individual total of 400 not out against England in 2004. The ICC said, 'He scored 531 runs across the two matches at an astonishing average of 265.50, including a composed 147 in the second innings of the first Test.' 'However, his standout act came in the second Test at Bulawayo, where he smashed an unbeaten 367 in his maiden outing as South Africa's Test skipper — the highest individual score in South African Test history.' 'Mulder also chipped in with the ball, claiming seven wickets at just 15.28 apiece, including a four-wicket haul in the first Test,' it added. The ICC lauded Stokes for his all-round show against India saying, 'He scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and took 12 wickets at 26.33, delivering in high-pressure situations with both bat and ball.' 'His leadership proved crucial in maintaining England's intensity and belief in a closely contested series. With ball in hand, he bowled long spells, often breaking key partnerships and turning the tide in England's favour,' it added. With PTI inputs

WI Vs PAK: West Indies Announce 15-Member Squad For ODI Series Against Pakistan

Last Updated: West Indies named a 15-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan in Trinidad, led by Shai Hope. Romario Shepherd returns, aiming to boost their 2027 World Cup qualification. West Indies have announced a 15-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan, with the three-match tournament scheduled to be played in Trinidad. The squad, led by Shai Hope, includes several young players who have been key for the Windies recently and sees the return of dynamic all-rounder Romario Shepherd. Shepherd is rejoining the West Indies ODI side for the first time since the series against Bangladesh last year. Eighteen-year-old wicket-keeper-batter Jewel Andrew, who debuted in ODIs against Sri Lanka last year, has retained his place after featuring in the ODI series in England earlier this summer. Left-arm pacer Jediah Blades, who earned his first cap against Bangladesh in 2024, has been recalled. Amir Jangoo, who scored a memorable century on his ODI debut against Bangladesh last year, also retains his spot after playing against Ireland in May. The West Indies are coming into the series following a 2-1 T20I series loss at home. Head coach Daren Sammy believes the series provides an opportunity to solidify their qualification for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. 'Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup," Sammy was quoted as saying. 'While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success. The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing ahead of the World Cup," he added. West Indies are currently ranked 10th in the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings, while Pakistan are positioned fourth, below India, New Zealand, and Australia. What Is West Indies Squad For Pakistan ODI Series? Shai Hope (c), Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd. view comments First Published: August 06, 2025, 23:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
