Why dilly-dallying around Jasprit Bumrah paints a wrong picture of Team India and the pacer
After ending on the losing side at Lord's, Team India is under the pump to bring the series on level terms again. Shubman Gill and Co will enter Old Trafford on July 23 trailing by 1-2 and hence would like to field the strongest XI. Barring a couple of places, every position in the eleven is sorted. However, the uncertainty about Jasprit Bumrah remains at large. Being the biggest match-winner present in the squad, the pacer needs to feature in the penultimate Test and give India the edge when they need it most. Despite the precarious state the team is in, there is no definite word on Bumrah.

No player bigger than the team, not even Bumrah
With Bumrah, the factor of workload management always walks alongside. The cricketer is perhaps the reason why the term has gained popularity over the years. No doubt Bumrah has been exceptional with the ball throughout his career, but if he can't commit to playing an entire tour, then it can put a lot of weight on the team, leaving them yearning for balance in the side.
For instance, in the first Test of the ongoing series against England, India had put a challenging target of 371 in front of England. The hosts held an upper hand while chasing, but in the end things got tricky when Ben Stokes was dismissed, and 71 more runs were still needed with five wickets in hand. Team India needed an inspirational spell from their trump card at that point, but as a precautionary measure, Bumrah wasn't brought back to the attack, and consequently, India lost the match by five wickets. What perplexed fans and experts was that during this phase was that he remained on the ground and on occasions scampered to save a boundary too.
Bumrah did not play the second Test at Edgbaston. Why? The Indian pacer seemingly has the liberty to cherry-pick the games in which he will make his presence. This is unprecedented, and one can navigate the entire history of Team India and yet may not find anything like that. This goes to show that the bowler's stature in the team has surpassed even that of superstars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Him taking proper rest and returning to play the Lord's Test further proves that Bumrah's whims and fancies are kept over the needs of the team.

The board needs to set the example straight
The situation puts the chief selector, coach, captain, and the entire team management in a bad light because when Bumrah had already conveyed that he wouldn't be able to play more than three Tests in the series, why did the board send him on tour in the first place? Didn't the greatest minds of cricket in India envision a situation where the team could be 1-2 down after three Tests and would be counting on its pace spearhead to turn the tide?
Needless to say, this question shouldn't have even emerged at this point. As one of the most experienced players in the team and the one who's being looked up to by his teammates, it's his duty to play and deliver for the team. The board could have considered selecting another player, as at least this situation wouldn't have existed then.
As he had already played two matches in the series, the question now arises: to fulfill the three-match condition, which game will Bumrah choose to play next? Will it be in Manchester, which is a must-win game for India, or in the fifth and final Test, where all could already be over and the team will be playing for consolation.

It's an unwelcome dilemma, which, at a time when the team is facing a series defeat, makes things even uglier.

India vs Pakistan: What happens next as WCL calls off Edgbaston clash? What's in reserve in Asia Cup, T20 World Cup?
The highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan in the second season of the World Championship of Legends was called off on Sunday after several Indian players withdrew from participation. The match was scheduled to mark the beginning of India's title defence, following their triumph over Pakistan in the inaugural final in Birmingham last year. What's in reserve in Asia Cup, T20 World Cup after WCL move Captain Yuvraj Singh, along with Harbhajan Singh, Irfan and Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, and Shikhar Dhawan, were among the first to opt out amid mounting public backlash. The controversy stemmed from the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which was followed by a military response from India under Operation Sindoor. While official confirmation was not issued for most withdrawals, Dhawan took to X in the early hours of Monday to clarify his decision. He stated that his choice was influenced by the current "geopolitical" tensions between India and Pakistan. "This is to formally reiterate and confirm that Mr. Shikhar Dhawan will not be participating in any matches against the Pakistan team in the upcoming WCL League. This decision was communicated earlier during our discussion on call and WhatsApp dated 11th May 2025," read his statement. Within hours, WCL cancelled the match between India and Pakistan, while apologising to the players for "unintentionally causing discomfort". They also explained that the mere move behind the fixture was to recreate some "happy memories." The organisers said: "After hearing the news that the Pakistan hockey team will be coming to India this year, and seeing the recent India vs Pakistan volleyball match along with a few other fixtures between the two nations in different sports, we thought of continuing with the India vs Pakistan match at WCL, just to create some happy memories for people around the globe. But maybe in the process, we ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions. Hence, we have decided to call off the India-Pakistan match. We sincerely apologise again for hurting the sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans." What next after WCL's move? What's in reserve in Asia Cup, T20 World Cup? While the controversy surrounding the WCL may not directly impact international cricket, the ongoing protests from Indian fans highlight the growing challenges of sports diplomacy amid rising political tensions. The next potential India-Pakistan clash could come in the Asia Cup, but the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has yet to officially confirm whether the tournament will take place this year. Earlier, India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, prompting months of diplomatic back-and-forth before the ICC intervened, selecting Dubai as a neutral venue for India's matches. A similar hybrid model was used during the 2023 Asia Cup, where India played all their games in Sri Lanka despite Pakistan being the designated host. Following this, Pakistan proposed that future tournaments adopt the same approach. This has led to speculation that Sri Lanka may host Pakistan's matches in the Asia Cup later this year, even though India are the official hosts. However, following the incident in Pahalgam, BCCI maintained that the final decision to participate in the Asia Cup and play a match with Pakistan was pending government clearance. Earlier on Friday, Indian Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya ended weeks of speculation over, saying that India has "no problem playing Pakistan in international tournaments where multiple countries are involved." His clarification came as India gears up to stage the two major hockey tournaments — the Hockey Asia Cup (August 27 — September 7 in Rajgir, Bihar) and the Junior World Cup later this year. Mandaviya confirmed that India would grant visas to the Pakistani teams. He said, "It is now up to their government whether they send the teams." The other big event is the T20 World Cup next year, where India are the hosts again. On May 22, PTI had reported that India and Pakistan are unlikely to be clubbed together in global tournaments, starting with 2026 T20 World Cup. "The issue is bound to come up for discussion at the annual conference. While the prospect of India and Pakistan not playing in ICC knockouts is unlikely, not drawing them in the same group, which has been the norm at ICC events, is a possibility," a BCCI source had told the news agency. ICC will take the final call when the members meet for the annual conference, which is likely to end on Sunday, July 20, in Singapore. Jay Shah is expected to have attended the meeting for the first time since assuming the role in December last year. In between the two is the 50-over Women's World Cup, which will begin on September 30. with India as the host nation. Pakistan will play all their matches in Colombo based on the pre-agreed hybrid model.

IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant drops an update on his injury - 'If calm had a sound...'
Beckenham: India's vice captain Rishabh Pant during a training session ahead of the fourth Test cricket match between India and England, at The County Ground, in Beckenham, England. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar)(PTI07_17_2025_000223B) India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant on Sunday dropped a massive hint about his injury status as the Team India vice-captain shared a 31-second video in which he can be seen batting without any visible discomfort. Pant posted a video of himself playing football, doing fielding drills, and batting in the nets ahead of the fourth Test, which starts on July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester. "If calm had a sound, it would be this," Pant wrote on X. — RishabhPant17 (@RishabhPant17) Pant had walked off the field during the second session of play on Day 1 of the third Test against England after suffering a blow to his left index finger. He was replaced by Jurel, who was not in the playing XI for the third Test, after on-field treatment failed to help the vice-captain recover sufficiently. Pant was grimacing in pain after putting in a dive to stop a delivery on his left, which Jasprit Bumrah had sprayed down the leg side in the 34th over of the innings during the second session. India camp hit by more injuries, Playing XI TENSION before Manchester Test vs England Pant managed to get his hands on the ball but couldn't stop it entirely, as England batters Joe Root and Ollie Pope scampered for a couple. Play was then held up for a while as Pant received treatment on his hand from the Indian support staff, but the wicketkeeper kept shrugging his hands when the action resumed. Eventually, Pant left the field after the end of Bumrah's over, with Jurel taking over the wicketkeeping duties. There was uncertainty about whether Pant would play in the Manchester Test. "He will bat in Manchester before the Test. Look, I don't think the injury is going to keep Rishabh out of the Test, no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test, and it's only going to get easier and easier on his finger. And keeping is obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can keep. We don't want to go through that again, where we have to replace the keeper after three innings," Team India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters on Thursday.
