Sutherland special secures Aussies another whitewash

Yahoo26-03-2025
Yet another Annabel Sutherland special ensured Australia completed a clean sweep of World Cup winners New Zealand in the third Twenty20 on Wednesday.
The Kiwis fought back during their pursuit of Australia's 4-180 courtesy of a quick-fire 99-run stand between Amelia Kerr and Maddy Green.
After being 4-54, Green (62 off 35) and Kerr (66 off 47) smashed New Zealand to 5-153 in the 18th over, needing an achievable 28 off 14 balls.
But Green's departure ahead of Sutherland's final over opened the door for the Aussie superstar to ice the game.
Sutherland removed Jess Kerr and Polly Inglis in successive balls before taking the crucial wicket of Amelia Kerr with the final ball of her spell.
The Belinda Clark Medal winner (4-35 off four) had been expensive prior to that over but fought back to all but guarantee the eight-run victory.
The Aussies had 4-180 to defend after emerging star Georgia Voll made New Zealand pay for its dropped chances.
The opener made an early statement, hitting her second ball for six, before she was dropped five times.
The 21-year-old made the Kiwis pay the ultimate price, going on to strike a Twenty20 career-best 75.
Voll packed eight fours and one six into her 57-ball stay which was supported by a powerful cameo from champion Ellyse Perry (32no from just 19) late in the innings.
Voll and the Aussies showed a particular liking for both Kerr sisters, hitting 80 runs in the star duo's eight overs.
The series sweep follows the Aussies' historic 16-0 Ashes whitewash of England in January.

Fulham reject €40m offer from Atalanta for Leeds United target Rodrigo Muniz

Fulham have rejected a €40 million bid from Atalanta for Leeds United target Rodrigo Muniz, according to Sky Sports Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri. Leeds manager Daniel Farke wants a new striker at the Elland Road club after telling Patrick Bamford to leave, and the Brazilian has emerged as his target. Fulham want €50m for his services, but the Whites may need to look elsewhere even if they can afford to meet their demands. Muniz is determined to join Atalanta and has told the Craven Cottage club of his transfer desire. Journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs claimed on Monday that Muniz remains Leeds' top striker target and they have not given up. Former Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another name the West Yorkshire club have discussed if signing Muniz does not work. They may now need to go for the Englishman if the claim from Tavolieri this afternoon is anything to go by. Leeds want Premier League quality as they look to recruit a quality number 9, and the Fulham star has proven himself. Sadly for them, it appears a move to where Champions League football is available appeals more to him, and Leeds have been here before. Brazilian winger Igor Paixao also opted to join Marseille ahead of the Whites from Feyenoord due to the opportunity to play in the elite European competition at the Ligue 1 club. Leeds had received emails from the Eredivisie club and the representatives of the attacker which suggested that respective terms had been agreed. However, he opted for Marseille and Muniz is now expected to turn them down for the same reason. Other striking options are on their wishlist and the Whites have three weeks to get a deal done for a new number 9 if they want to hit the ground running on their Premier League return.

Who returned to practice, and who are dealing with new injuries ahead of the Eagles joint practices with the Browns and preseason Week 2 The Eagles are holding a light practice on Tuesday, just hours before two days of joint practice sessions with the Cleveland Browns at the NovaCare Complex. Philadelphia has the NFL's best offensive line, and that depth will be tested with Landon Dickerson nursing a meniscus injury. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Cooks suffered a shoulder injury and had an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of the injury. Charley Hughlett - neck The Eagles' long snapper is healthy and returned to practice on Tuesday. Montrell Johnson - hamstring Johnson is working through a hamstring injury, which forced him to observe Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals from the sidelines. Byron Young - groin Young has been battling a groin injury, but returned to practice. LIMITED Zack Baun - back Baun has been listed as limited after missing seven practices with a back injury. He hasn't participated in team drills. But has been in shoulder pads. Tottenham ready to beat Arsenal and sign Eberechi Eze after opportunity emerges

Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to seize a window of opportunity to beat Arsenal to the signing of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, by putting together an acceptable package for Crystal Palace this week. As reported in the Independent's 'Inside Football' newsletter on Friday, Spurs have ramped up interest in the 27-year-old after the injury to James Maddison, amid a widespread belief that the saga might finally come to a head by the start of the Premier League season. That would coincide with the expiration of Eze's release clause for this window. Arsenal have long been interested in Eze, and are viewed as the Crystal Palace player's first preference, but the fact that no proper transfer bid has yet materialised means there is a chance for Spurs to move forward. Eze is open to the idea, despite Spurs not pressing on interest earlier in the summer. An opportunity has arisen because Arsenal have prioritised other positions first, and have spent much of the summer figuring out how to do all of that business and then bring Eze or one other player in. The view from numerous sources is that Arsenal's preference is to sell first, rather than just take the risk of making such a signing and then being under pressure to sell before the end of the window. Arsenal's stance is also tempered by the idea of bringing in a left winger, since that is one area where they do not have substantial depth. The club may yet feel they should prioritise that over Eze. There has been no official approach to Palace, but clubs have naturally broached potential payment plans. Eze's release clause - understood to be around £68m - expires on 15 August, but only for this window. It is not seen as an obstacle to any deal given that Arsenal have been informally speaking with Palace about alternative structures. Arsenal are open to approaches for Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Jakob Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Reiss Nelson. A move for Nelson to Fulham has been discussed, but the player prefers a one-season loan. Much may depend on whether Eze is clear on his own destination, and willing to wait.
