Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre welcomes customers back after a three-month renovation

Time Out21-07-2025
It's back to business for Tiong Bahru Market, which has reopened in July after three months of upgrading works. The beloved food centre has been serving the community for decades, from its early days as Seng Poh Market in the 1950s. The market was last renovated in 2017, and though it was still in good condition as of early 2025, the National Environment Agency (NEA) decided some light upkeep was needed.
The refreshed food centre boasts new tables and stools, new floor tiles, larger fans to keep the indoor area cool, and added awnings to keep the rain out and provide added shade to tables by the railings. The toilets have also been cleaned and upgraded. On top of that, you'll also spot a fresh coat of paint on the building's exterior and a new landscaped garden on the first floor.
After a long wait, regular customers can finally feast again and eat their fill of the many food offerings the market is known for. There are a whopping 342 food and drink stalls at Tiong Bahru Market, including Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh, which sells fluffy steamed rice cakes doused with homemade chilli and chye poh (pickled radish).
Many also love Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice, Hui Ji Fishball Noodles, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice, and Koh Brother Pig's Organ Soup. And of course, not forgetting the longstanding rivalry between Lor Mee 178 and Tiong Bahru Lor Mee. Meanwhile, those craving a light snack can visit Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun; Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh for traditional peng kueh and soon kueh; dim sum stall Tiong Bahry Pau & Snack; or Tow Kwar Pop for charcoal-grilled beancurd puffs.

Bride's Coworker Files HR Complaint Over Not Being Invited to Wedding

The woman said in a Reddit post that her coworker has been giving her "side-eyes" and "little digs"NEED TO KNOW A soon-to-be bride revealed on Reddit that her coworker filed an HR complaint after not being invited to her wedding "This was honestly one of the weirdest work things I've ever dealt with," the woman wrote She said the colleague now "acts super passive-aggressive toward me"A soon-to-be bride is facing some heat in the office over her guest list. In a post on Reddit, a woman revealed that her coworker wasn't too pleased about not being invited to her wedding. 'This was honestly one of the weirdest work things I've ever dealt with,' the user wrote on the site before explaining that she's not close to this colleague. 'We've had small talk here and there, nothing deep. No lunches together. No real outside-of-work connection,' the bride wrote. According to the woman, her colleague bluntly asked 'if she was invited" after finding out about the upcoming nuptials. 'I kinda laughed and said, 'Oh no, it's really small. Just close friends and family.' I didn't think anything of it,' the fiancée recalled. 'She got quiet and a little cold after that, but I figured okay, maybe awkward moment, whatever.' The soon-to-be wife then went on to say that she got an invite to a human resources meeting a few days later. 'Turns out she filed a complaint saying I was being 'exclusive' and 'creating a hostile environment by leaving people out,' ' she said. 'Because I didn't invite her. To my wedding. That I'm paying for. That isn't even work-related.' 'So I had to sit in this HR meeting and explain that I'm not required to invite coworkers I barely know to my literal wedding. That it's a personal event,' she continued. 'That it has nothing to do with work or who's in the office.' Meanwhile, the Reddit user wasn't the only perplexed person in the room as 'HR honestly looked just as confused as I was.' 'They basically said, 'Yep, okay, thanks,' and closed the case,' she added. However, unlike HR, it doesn't look like the coworker is ready to let things go just yet. 'But now she acts super passive-aggressive toward me,' she wrote on Reddit. 'Like side-eyes, little digs when I walk by. Still bringing it up in these weird sarcastic comments like, 'Some people are so inclusive these days.' ' The woman added, 'I can't believe she actually thought HR could… what, make me invite her? Some people really do think they're the main character.' ! Many readers on Reddit took the bride's side. 'I would report her to HR for creating an uncomfortable environment now,' one person wrote. A second said, 'Definitely seems like the coworker is heading towards hostile work environment territory, if not already there.' Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

Canada pushing to include Indigenous rights in United Nations plastics treaty

OTTAWA — Canada is pushing to bring language recognizing the rights of Indigenous peoples back into a United Nations plastics pollution treaty. Delegates from more than 170 countries are in Geneva to resume negotiations on a treaty that was supposed to be finalized last year. Countries are at odds on how far the legally binding agreement should go, with many nations opposing caps on plastic production. Following negotiations in South Korea in November, which ended without an agreement, the draft version of the treaty removed references to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Canada, with the backing of 45 other countries, presented a proposal Tuesday to put UNDRIP language back in to the treaty. Scientists estimate the world disposes of more than 350 million tonnes of plastic every year, with less than one-tenth being recycled and more than one-fifth ending up in the environment. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 6, 2025. Juan Soto spoils Gavin Williams' no-hit bid with 9th-inning home run, but Guardians hold on to top Mets

MLB is still seeking its first no-hitter of the 2025 season. Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams threw 8 1/3 no-hit innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday and had the green light to go all the way despite having the highest pitch count of the MLB season. But Juan Soto spoiled the party. The Mets slugger hit a deep fly ball to center field on a 1-0 fastball that Williams left over the plate. Centerfielder Angel Martinez gave chase and made a play on the ball at the wall. But the ball snuck over his glove and just over the wall for a home run before bouncing back into the field of play. The home run was Soto's 26th of the season and stood as New York's only run of the day as Cleveland held on for a 4-1 victory. MLB is still seeking its first solo no-hitter since Blake Snell no-hit the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 2, 2024 while pitching for the San Francisco Giants. Three Chicago Cubs pitchers combined to no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 4 of last season. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Williams finished the eighth inning having already thrown a career-high 111 pitches. But Guardians manager Stephen Vogt didn't hesitate to send him back out for the ninth to face the top of the Mets order. Vogt struck out Francisco Lindor to lead off the inning before Soto's home run ended the bid. Vogt didn't get the last out, but he finished the game with the win, having thrown 8 2/3 innings with six strikeouts, four walks issued and the single hit allowed to Soto. He threw 126 pitches. The effort lowered Williams' ERA to 3.17 for the season, which would stand as the best of his three-season MLB career. The Guardians are still seeking their first no-hitter since Len Barker threw a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays in 1981.
