Iran notified Qatar about intentions to strike US air base: Reports

Al Mayadeen4 days ago
Iran had informed the United States, via two diplomatic channels, of its intention to target the US Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, hours before carrying out the retaliatory attack, Reuters reported on Monday, citing a senior regional source.
Earlier, Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had targeted the Al-Udeid Air Base with a 'powerful and destructive" missile strike as part of an operation it dubbed Annunciation of Victory, in response to the US aggression that struck three peaceful nuclear facilities in Iran.
The source added that Tehran also notified the Qatari government, a detail confirmed by The Wall Street Journal, which cited Arab officials and sources familiar with the events as saying that Doha had received a direct alert from Iran ahead of the strike.
In the same context, the officials told WSJ that the US administration was aware of the Iranian attack in advance. Meanwhile, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the targeted base had been evacuated well before the missiles landed.
Doha also took additional precautionary steps, including closing its airspace. The US embassy in the Qatari capital issued a warning earlier in the day, urging American citizens to remain in place.

A US military official told Al Mayadeen that the Al-Udeid Air Base, southwest of Doha, was hit by an Iranian missile strike using short- and medium-range ballistic missiles.
The official said that 'so far, there are no reports of casualties among US forces,' and noted that the military command is closely monitoring the situation.
In Washington, a senior White House official told CNN that the Trump administration had anticipated the Iranian response following the US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities over the weekend.
The official claimed that US President Donald Trump 'is not seeking further military engagement in the region.'

EU welcomes Israel-Syria ceasefire, urges protection of civilians

The EU on Saturday welcomed a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Syria and Israel, saying it was "appalled" by the deadly sectarian violence in Syria's southern Druze heartland that prompted Israeli strikes. "Now is the time for dialogue and for advancing a truly inclusive transition. Syria's transitional authorities, together with local authorities, bear the responsibility to protect all Syrians without distinction," the European Union's diplomatic service said in a statement. It also called for all perpetrators behind "grave violations" of international law to be held accountable. AFP

FPM leader Bassil: Decentralization is key to reforming the state, and there is no longer any impediment for the return of refugees to Syria

The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, stated that administrative decentralization is the foundation of the Taif Agreement and a key to reforming the state, stressing that it remains hostage to a centralized system that fears losing control over citizens' affairs. Speaking at a conference, Bassil said decentralization strengthens state unity and has nothing to do with partition or federalism. "If we genuinely want balanced development, there's no reason to fear decentralization," he added. On the topic of municipal and mukhtar elections, Bassil said: "We encouraged consensus and created a positive atmosphere. Municipalities are not meant for political battles, and we had a clear presence." On the issue of displacement, Bassil stressed that Lebanon is a country that embraces all cultures and nationalities, pointing out at the same time that Syrian displacement and Palestinian refugees are two facets of resettlement, which is contrary to the constitution. "We cannot rely on a centralized plan regarding Syrian displacement, and municipalities have broad powers in this field," he said. He emphasized that there is no longer any impediment to the return of refugees to Syria, noting that illegal immigration is changing Lebanon's identity.

Fighting will continue until the entirety of Sweida is liberated: Al Hijri

Fighting will continue until the entirety of Sweida is liberated, and whoever surrenders their weapons is in our care. The spiritual leader of the Druze community in Syria, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, declared that 'there is no agreement, negotiation, or authorization with the armed gangs that falsely call themselves the government.' Al-Hajri called on 'the remaining gang members to lay down their weapons and surrender themselves to our heroic youth. Whoever surrenders their weapons is in our care; they will not be humiliated or tortured.' He stressed, 'The fighting will continue until the entirety of Sweida is liberated.' In a related development Syrian Observatory reported that 'clashes are continuing in the city of Sweida, coinciding with the arrival of reinforcements from tribal fighters, the expansion of the clashes, and the opening of a new front by tribal forces from the direction of Talul al-Safa in southeastern Syria, in addition to their advance towards the al-Omran roundabout at the western entrance to Sweida city, resulting in the deaths of several on both sides.' SOHR sources also reported 'intermittent clashes erupted the Druze stronghold of Jaramana, in the Damascus countryside, accompanied by sounds of gunfire from the direction of Al-Maliha and Kashkul, which continued for more than an hour.' They revealed that 'the humanitarian situation in the city is deteriorating, with communications and the internet completely cut off, and all hospitals out of service as a result of the heavy shelling and ongoing clashes. The city has witnessed looting and theft, exacerbating the suffering of the population, amid a complete lack of medical and food services.'
